Lewisburg’s Kimmy Shannon, Shore’s Reese Charney join exclusive clubs

LEWISBURG — The area was well represented on the first day of Class AA competition on Friday at Bucknell as Jersey Shore’s Reese Charney, Lewisburg’s Mason Ordonez and Lewisburg’s Kimmy Shannon all advanced out of the preliminary races to secure a spot in the finals.
Shannon earned her fifth career state championship as she won the 200 IM. It brings Shannon’s career medal count to seven with one event for her remaining on Saturday.
Ordonez finished with a fifth-place medal after swimming a 1:43.81 in the 200 free. His time was a nearly one-second drop off his prelim time. Indiana’s Preston Kessler won in 1:38.57 and Maddoc Watkins of Dallas finished second in 1:39.01.
Charney claimed her first career medal by placing eighth in the 50 free competition.
For Shannon, she etched her name amongst the best all-time in District 4.

With her medal on Friday, Shannon joined Bloomsburg’s Jessica Stephens (2000-03) as a seven-time state medalist. Shannon is also one of just nine swimmers to ever earn seven or more state medals at the PIAA championships.
Shannon joins the company of former great District 4 swimmers in Central Columbia’s Katie Saloky (2010-13, 13 medals), Bloomsburg’s Zach Stephens (2008-11, 12 medals), Central Columbia’s Beth Grazio (2011-14, nine medals), Shamokin’s Abigail Doss (20017-20, eight medals), Mifflinburg’s Adriana Grabski (2011-14, eight medals), Bloomsburg’s Stef Williams (1995-98, eight medals), Central Columbia’s Courtney Stanchock (1998-01, eight medals) and Stephens.
Of those nine swimmers with seven or more state medals, Shannon is one of only five to earn all of them in individual competition.
Doss, Grabski, Williams and Stanchock all earned eight individual state medals, with Williams recording an impressive eight gold medals. Grabski had six first-place medals in her career, Stanchock earned five and Stephens four.

Charney became just the sixth swimmer all-time in Jersey Shore history to reach the podium in either boys or girls competition. She’s the first since Jordan O’Connor finished fifth in the 100 back in 2019.
Charney joins a list of talented former swimmers in O’Connor, Emma Butzler (2015-18, four medals), Maddi Thompson (2010-11, two medals), Dave Sheetz (1988-89, two medals) and Joy Sundberg (1975-76, two medals) as swimmers to medal at the state meet for Jersey Shore.
Butzler was a third-place finisher in the 100 fly in 2018 and took seventh that year as well in the 100 free. Butlzer medaled in 2017 in the 100 fly (third) and in 2015 (seventh). Thompson tied for sixth in the 100 free in 2011 and finished fifth in the event in 2010. Sheetz took fifth in 1989 in the 100 back and was a silver medalist in 1988 in the event. Sundberg took sixth in the 100 back in 1976 and 1975.
Shannon did what she does best and cruised in the prelim race for the 200 IM to finish first to reach the finals. She swam a 2:02.61 in the prelim race.
In the 200 free prelims, Ordonez swam a 1:44.56 to finish fifth and secure a spot in the finals.

Emma Gerlinski of Lewisburg finished 13th to qualify for the B finas with a time of 1:59.00, just 0.08 seconds from her seeded time.
Lewisburg’s 200 free relay team in girls competition reached the B finals wtih at ime of 1:41.59 in the morning’s prelim race, shaving 0.03 seconds off their time in the process.
The PIAA swimming and diving championships continues on Saturday for the second day of Class AA competition.
