Local roundup: Montoursville softball beats Shikellamy in five innings

Kayleigh Sheleman has come storming back from a torn ACL suffered a year ago and was a force Thursday afternoon, going 3 for 3 with a home run, double and seven RBIs as Montoursville defeated Shikellamy, 15-4 in five innings.

Sheleman finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle and also walked, while scoring two runs. The Warriors (2-1) produced 11 hits in four at-bats and Natalie Bennett and Avery Cozzi both had two hits. Jill Stone hit a triple and drove in three runs, while Emily George collected a hit, RBI and run.

Lynna Clark and Isabelle Engel combined on a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts and Dani Miller homered as Jersey Shore won its second straight game, defeating Milton, 5-2. Clark struck out 12 in five innings of one-hit pitching to earn the win, while Engel fanned three in two innings for the save. Miller homered and scored twice, while Jaymison Stellfox (2 for 3), Jocelyn McCracken and Katelyn Stover all doubled.

Makenzie Wagner, Evan Sockman, Lola English, Kendall Wagner, Matti Mason and Gianna Balchun all had two hits, helping Bucktail remain undefeated with a 12-2 win against Montgomery in five innings. The Bucks (3-0) have won all three games via the mercy rule and produced 13 hits while building an 8-0 lead in the second inning. Amelia Shrimp went 2 for 2 with an RBI and run for Montgomery (1-1).

Chelsea Miller went 3 for 3 with two home runs and six RBIs as Mifflinburg blanked Warrior Run, 10-0 in five innings.

North Penn-Liberty defeated Towanda, 4-0, thanks to a three-run third inning to pull away. Saige Lehman led Liberty by going 2 for 3.

• Braydon Kamerer delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the fifth inning and Stiles Eyer shut down Bloomsburg in relief as Muncy earned its first win, rallying past Bloomsburg, 6-5. Kamerer finished 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs. Cameron Kamerer also doubled as did Liam Adams as Muncy erased three separate one-run deficits.

John Kiehl had a big day, going 2 for 2 with a double and six RBIs and Loyalsock scored 13 first-inning runs as it downed Lewisburg, 17-1 in three innings. Tyler Gee also doubled and Ethan Nagy was 1 for 1 with two walks. Derek Asche went 2 for 2 for Lewisburg.

Tyler Wetzel threw four strong innings in his first varsity pitching start and went 2 for 3, helping Hughesville defeat Lake-Lehman 9-3 in a rematch of last year’s state tournament opener. Nate Bieber threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and Gage Thomas was 2 for 3 with three RBIs.

Evan Snyder hit a double and drove in three runs, while Aiden Barlett and Connor Anstadt each hit doubles. The Spartans (2-0) scored four runs in the first inning to take a lead they never relinquished.

Central Mountain dropped its first game of the season when it traveled to Selinsgrove and fell, 4-2 to the Seals. Blake Walker led Central Mountain with two hits while Elek Fravel, Kevin Grenninger, Brady Lavelle and Isaiah Maldanado each garnered one hit.

Alex Davis went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, but North Penn-Mansfield came up shy against Towanda, 11-5. Towanda scored five runs in the first two innings before sealing the game with a four-run seventh inning.

Canton defeated Northeast Bradford, 10-2, thanks to a huge seven-run sixth inning. Bailey Gardner went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored for Canton in the win.

Holden Ward, Gardner, Cohen Landis and Mason Harold each collected doubles. Ben Fitch hit a triple.

• South Williamsport picked up a 4-1 win against North Penn-Liberty in boys tennis. Kayvan Shams won at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and Luke Sanford won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Wellsboro defeated Towanda, 4-1, a day after beating Addison (N.Y.), 5-0. Lucas Cuneo earned a three-set win against Haven Poll, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Luke Rothermel beat Diego Oliver at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-3.

Central Mountain fell to Altoona, 3-2. David Lindsay of Central Mountain earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Luke Mitchell. Central Mountain’s Joe McCluskey won at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-2.

Lewisburg blanked Shikellamy, 5-0, to improve to 4-0. Will Cecchini picked up a three-set win against Jack Weaver, 7-5, 3-6, 10-6. At No. 1 singles, Sarthak vishwakarma won, 6-4, 6-4.

Loyalsock beat Central Columbia, 3-2, as the Lancers swept singles competition. Logan Hammond (No. 1), Evan Anderson (No. 2) and Colby Peters (No. 3) all won in singles action as Anderson and Peters both won three-set matches.

Jersey Shore’s Derrick Grubb and Luke Sarge won a thriller at No. 2 doubles over Dayne Feese and Mikey Nisbet in three sets, 7-6 (7-3), 5-6, 7-6 (10-7) as the Bulldogs beat Williamsport, 5-0.

Ryder Fink won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs and Shore’s Matt Fravel won at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-5.

Hughesville moved to 3-0 after blanking Mifflinburg, 5-0. John Finnegan earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Andrew Blake while both Mason Thomas (No. 2) and Jake Buck (No. 3) earned 6-0, 6-0 victories.

Hughesville’s wins in doubles competition came by forfeits.

• Jersey Shore boys track and field officially opened up its season on Thursday afternoon with a home meet against Montgomery and dominated, 113-28. On both the boys and girls sides, Jersey Shore won 15 of the 18 events on the day.

In the boys 3,200 relay, Allison, Davis Weaver and McDermott posted a time of 10:39, Brodie Herr took first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.6 seconds, Ashton Sweeley won the 400m relay in 54.6 seconds, Sam Davis won the 3200-meter race in 13:07 and Herr won the 200-meter relay in 23 seconds.

In field events, Peyton Whitman jumped 18 feet, 10 inches to take first in long jump while Sweeley jumped 5 feet, 4 inches to take high jump.

In girls action, Hartman, Miller Engel and Dincher took first in the 3,200 relay, Anna Sick won the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds and 400 dash in 1:01 while Lucy Engel won the 800 race in 2:54. Olivia Miller took the 3,200 race in a time of 13:13.

In field action, Montgomery took long and triple jump but Shore took first in the other events. Nina Steppe threw the shot put 33 feet, Allison Bilbay threw discuss 84 feet, 4 inches.

• Junior Matthew Baldridge won both his double and singles match to help lift the Lycoming College men’s tennis team past Lancaster Bible College, 5-4.

Baldridge won his singles match against Hemberth Pena, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to clinch the fifth point and partnered with sophomore Josh Neidert to win their No. 2 doubles match, 8-5.

Senior Luke Leach, a Wellsboro graduate, beat Josh Jarvis, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, senior Connor Albaugh, a Loyalsock graduate, won his singles match against Cameron Tripp, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles and junior Mohamed Ebeid also won his singles match against Andrew Kelly, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

• Junior Rei Saar, a Montoursville graduate, won her double and singles match to help lead the Lycoming College women’s tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Lancaster Bible.

Saar won her singles match against Jania Weist, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 singles to clinch the win. Junior Sarah Lanphear partnered with Saar to win their No. 2 doubles match, 8-5.

Senior Hiyori Lai beat Sushannah Clawser, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and the Warriors had wins by default at No. 6 singles and No. 4 doubles.

• For the second consecutive day, the Lock Haven men’s track and field team was in action as it hosted the Lock Haven Midweek Meet. After competing on Wednesday at the Bloomsburg Midweek Meet, today’s action featured mostly relay competition, but once again Lock Haven dominated the field – top to bottom.

In all, Lock Haven posted 11 victories and the Bald Eagles racked up a number of PSAC championship qualifying marks.

The Bald Eagles also took time to honor their graduating seniors in Montoursville graduate Dominic Caputo, Eric Dixon, Austin Melius, Ethan Rogers, Neville Smith, Kohen Stover, Milton graduate Tanner Walter and Andrew Wehrle.

Lock Haven posted victory in 11 events including the 110 hurdles, 400 relay, 3,000 steeplechase, shuttle hurdle relay, sprint medley relay, high jump, 3,200 relay, 1,600 relay, long jump and 10,000 run.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Lock Haven won with a time of 1:02.20, which broke a 47-year old school record in the event. Lock Haven finished 1-2 in the sprint medley relay with times of 3:31.18 and 3:41.84, respectively. The winning time marked the third fastest time in school history.

In women’s competition, Lock Haven honored its seniors in Central Mountain graduate Hunter Barger, Julia Beck, Elaina Klinger, Megan Lysek-Hagy, Gianna Marasco, Megan Mudger and Olvia Swartz. The Bald Eagles own the high jump, hammer throw, 10,000 run and sprint medley relay.

Alyssa VanGorder, a Central Mountain graduate, and Beck finished 1-2 in the hammer throw with marks of 138-2 and 137-1, respectively. Freshman Reagan Irons posted a win in the high jump with a mark of 4-11. In the 10,000, Lysek-Hagy and Gwen Lloyd finished 1-2 with a pair of PSAC championship qualifying marks.
