Local roundup: Sock boys, girls track and field sweeps South Williamsport
Loyalsock’s Chloe Kennedy was a two-event winner as she won the 100 hurdles in 18.34 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 53.39 and Loyalsock claimed numerous wins in the field events en route to defeating South Williamsport in girls track and field, 88-56.
Maddy Hall of Loyalsock won the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 10 inches and the Lancers’ Katie Hughes won the long jump with a distance of 14-2. Loyalsock’s Abby Pietraski won the triple jump with a distance of 31-1 and Katie Clapper of Loyalsock threw the javelin 85-11 for a win.
Lillian Bradley had an outstanding day for South Williamsport as the Mountie claimed wins in the 100 (13.45), 200 (28.55) and 400 (1:04.74).
• Will Burdett won the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles as Loyalsock’s boys track and field team earned an 88-45 win against South Williamsport. Loyalsock saw Jeremiah Johnson claim two individual wins as well.
Johnson won the shot put by throwing 46-3, winning by a throw of more than eight feet, and also won the discus with a throw of 124-11, the only competitor to surpass the 100-foot mark.
Loyalsock’s Jamaire Harden ran an 11.50 to win by 0.63 seconds in the 100 over South’s Jonah White, who would win the 200 race. In the 400, Loyalsock’s Ryan Lingg broke a minute to win in 54.84.
South Williamsport’s Dylan Scheller was a two-time winner in the dual meet as the Mountie won the long jump by jumping 19-4 and the triple jump with a distance of 38-11.
• Royce Bowes threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Logan Kirby stranded the tying runner on base in the seventh inning as Montoursville opened its season with a 6-5 win against Holy Cross. The Warriors broke a tie in the sixth inning and also rallied from down 3-0 in the first and 4-2 in the second inning.
Owen George combined with Bowes and Kirby to not allow an earned run over the final six innings. Brody Aldenderfer went 2 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs, while Bowes added a double. Jonah Heddings was 1 for 2 with an RBI and Elias Eck 1 for 2 with a run.
• Nolah Moyer hit three doubles, drove in four runs and threw a three-inning one-hitter with nine strikeouts as Muncy won for the second time in two days, defeating St. John Neumann, 17-0. Moyer has 29 strikeouts in 10 innings the past two days.
Taylor Shannon hit an RBI triple and Addi Gresh and Jailyn Baker both added hits and three RBIs. Muncy scored 11 runs in the first inning. Sophie Reid had a single for Neumann.
A nine-run third inning helped lift Danville to a 15-2 win against Lewisburg. Lewisburg was held to four hits as Kayla Pfleegor led the Green Dragons by going 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
• Wellsboro earned a 5-0 win over Addison, New York, in boys tennis, 5-0. Jacob Abadi earned a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles and Lucas Cuneo won 6-1, 6-2 against Caleb Abbott at No. 2 singles.
In doubles competition, Isaac Macias and Gideon Lawton earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Jason Zheng and Jax Donley.
• Sophomore Riley Block posted six goals and added three assists and junior Alexa Baldwin had three goals and six assists to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team, which fell to Immaculata University, 24-16, in non-conference action.
Block put up two goals in the first, third and fourth periods of the game for the Warriors (4-4 overall), while dishing out three assists for the season high in points. Baldwin’s six assists marked the fifth time this season that she had at least five in a game. Her 34 assists are already third in school history, just six shy of the school record of 40 set by Heather Suit in 2007.
The Warriors (4-4 overall) led by two goals four times through the first half of the second quarter, but Immaculata (6-4 overall) used a six-goal run to help it take a 13-8 lead into halftime. That lead expanded to 11 goals at the start of the fourth before the Warriors went on a four-goal run, but they couldn’t get closer than seven the rest of the way.
Lehigh’s high-scoring attack trio of Olivia Memeger, Emma Eberhardt, and Gabby Schneider accounted for 13 goals as the host Mountain Hawks used a big fourth-quarter flurry to pull away from Bucknell, 15-8.
Taylor Kopan scored two goals, and Phoebe Macleod, Taylor McClain, and Alex Nesbitt all recorded a goal and an assist for the Bison, who dropped to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League.
Lehigh, now 6-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play, received six goals from the senior Memeger, five from graduate student Eberhardt, and two goals and three assists from grad student Schneider.
Senior goalie Hayley Hunt also played a starring role with 14 saves, as the Mountain Hawks won despite being outshot by Bucknell 30-21.
The Bison played a very strong game for three quarters against a veteran squad on its home turf.
• Senior Zac Zaller pitched a career-long seven innings, allowing four hits and just one earned run for the Lycoming College baseball team, but it fell to Wilkes University, 2-0, in Landmark Conference action.
Zaller (0-5) walked one and struck out one, as he tied his career long of seven innings, which he pitched against Delaware Valley in 2023. He allowed just one hit in the first five innings of the game.
Wilkes (15-3 overall, 6-2 overall) got on the board in the seventh when a two-out throwing error allowed Nathan Loch to score from second after he singled to lead off the inning. In the seventh, Chase Vrabel hit a two-out RBI double to score the second run.
Sophomore Jack Kelly had a sixth-inning infield single for the Warriors (4-15 overall, 1-7 Landmark). Jimmy Brazofsky led the Colonels, going 2 for 3 with a run.
• Junior Sarah Lanphear, junior and Montoursville graduate Rei Saar and senior Hiyori Iai all posted singles wins to lead the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, as it hosted Wilkes University, falling 6-3.
Lanphear came back to post a 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 over Kaitlyn O’Neil at No. 4 singles. Saar beat Karlee Yuscavage, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Iai won her match 6-2, 6-4 over Kensington Edmond at No. 5 singles.
The Warriors are now 0-8 overall and 0-2 in the Landmark and Wilkes University advance 2-6 overall and 2-2 in the Landmark.
• Seth Neal’s victory in the 800 headlined the outdoor portion of the schedule for the Mansfield Mountaineers men’s track and field team as the Mounties competed at the first day of the Commonwealth Cup hosted by Bloomsburg.
Neal earned the top spot in the event with a time of 1:58.96 to start strong in his outdoor campaign.
Ibrahim Sheriff, Allwin Stoudt, and Victor Ortiz posted top ten finishes in the 400-meter dash, grabbing the sixth, seventh, and ninth places. Sheriff finished with a time of 53.80, while Stoudt and Ortiz finished with times of 54.70 and 55.64 respectively.
Isaac Showers earned a personal best in the 1500-meter run with a best time of 4:31.45, earning 13th and Derek Simpson finished behind him with a time of 4:35.18.
Aaron Thomas posted a 200-meter dash time of 24.31, finishing 16th and a time of 12.17 in the 100-meter dash. Michael Beals ran a time of 13.73 in the event.
Lock Haven took top honors in the 100-meter dash, the 400-meter hurdles, the 1,500-meter run, the 5,000-meter run, the discus throw and the triple jump. The Bald Eagles swept the top-four spots in the 1,500-meter event and Lock Haven went 1-2-3 in the triple jump.
Lock Haven went 1-2 in the discus throw and Braedon Firankski’s winning mark of 142-10 in the discus throw was a PSAC championship qualifying mark. Eric Zalar was second in the event with a mark of 130-70.
Lock Haven dominated the throwing events as Nathan Fetchkan and Zalar finished 2-3 in the shot put with marks of 44-08.25 and 40-00.75, respectively.
Michael Lawrence, Central Mountain graduate Chase Young and Matthew Muthler swept the top-three spots in the triple jump. Lawrence won with a leap of 44-02.72, while Young (43-08.75) and Muthler (40-07.75) placed second and third.
• Multiple athletes for the Mansfield Mountaineers women’s track and field team earned victories at the first meet of the outdoor season at the first day of the Commonwealth Cup hosted by Bloomsburg.
Headlining the team was Skylar Brown, who picked up two victories to open up her season. Posting a time of 12.29 in the 100-meter dash and 24.92 in the 200-meter dash, Brown hit PSAC qualifying marks in those events.
The trio of Madison Ziska, Abigail Taylor, and Angie Colon consisted of the other three victories. Ziska finished first in the 400, narrowly grabbing the gold with a time of 1:00.47. The time is the tenth fastest time in program history.
Taylor placed on top of the leaderboard of the triple jump, landing a finish of 11.24 meters.
Thrower Mallory Eck, a Central Mountain graduate, won the discus throw as she turned in one of several top-three performances for Lock Haven. Eck won the discus with a throw of 115-6 and Julia Beck was third with a mark of 106-10.
Clarissa Davis was second in the shot put with a throw of 37-5 3/4.
Aubrey Sechrist, a Jersey Shore graduate, finished second in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:58.54.
Hunter Barger, a Central Mountain graduate, also turned in a second-place finish as she placed second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.73, which narrowly missed the PSAC championship qualifying standard.
