South Williamsport's baseball team opened the season with a 3-0 win over Wilkes-Barre on Friday. The Mounties led 1-0 after three innings before two runs in the bottom of the fifth helped South gain separation.
Tadd Lusk led South by going 2 for 2 while Kayden Shay went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and Kaiden Kistner was 1 for 2.
Noah Turner earned the win by throwing five innings of two-hit ball, striking out five. Kistner had two innings of relief and struck out two.
• Sophomore Mallory Rodarmel, a Loyalsock graduate, led the Lycoming College softball team in the first game on Friday, March 15, at the North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex, as she went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to pace Lycoming in a 9-3 win over SUNY Delhi. The Warriors fell to UMass-Boston, 8-0, in five innings in the second game.
Junior Avery Eiswerth, a Williamsport graduate, went 2 for 4 with two runs, a double and a RBI and senior Kylie Russell, a Jersey Shore graduate, went 2 for 3 with two runs, a triple and two RBI. Sophomore Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, also added two triples and a RBI.
The Warriors (6-3 overall) took the lead in the second inning, as Rodarmel led off with a single before sophomore Hailee Sobieski reached on a perfectly placed bunt. After a sac bunt and a strikeout, Russell delivered a two-out RBI triple to right center and Alexander followed with a triple of her own to make it 3-1.
Lycoming tacked on three more runs in the third, with Eiswerth and Rodarmel starting the rally with one-out singles, as Rodarmel's single scored Eiswerth. Sophomore Alex Eckerson singled with two outs and a throwing error allowed Rodarmel to score before a wild pitch brought in Eckerson to make it 6-1.
• Penn College surrendered five runs in the eighth inning in an 11-10 setback to Lancaster Bible College in a United East baseball game. Penn College jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the top of the third inning. Shawn Townsend and Brandon Shane each brought in a run in the first and second and Adam Aldenderfer and Shane had RBIs in the third. Bible added two in the bottom of the third to get within two, 4-2, before Quinn Hanafin's single in the sixth made it 5-2.
Hanafin later matched a fifth inning run by LBC with a sacrifice in the sixth. The Chargers tied the game at six, with three runs in the seventh, before PCT added four in the eighth to take a 10-6 lead.
Lock Haven swept Bloomsburg on the road in a PSAC Eastern Division doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. The Bald Eagles took game one, 4-1, before stealing the nightcap, 7-5.
With the sweep, Lock Haven improves to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the PSAC East. Bloomsburg falls to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
Lock Haven totaled 15 hits on the afternoon, while the pitching staff sent eight pitchers to the mound and limited the Huskies to six runs in 14 innings.
Mansfield dropped a doubleheader to MIllersvile, falling in game one, 3-0, and 2-1 in game two.
In game one, all the scoring came in the first when Millersville jumped on Montaineer starter Austin Lewis early stringing together three straight singles to take a 1-0 lead. Millersville plated two more in the inning with a two RBI single.
Lewis settled in after a tough first inning allowing just two hits the remainder of the game. He would finish the day throwing 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, and totaling three strikeouts. Lewis gave the Mountaineers the chance to stay in the game but the Mansfield offense was unable to capitalize on any chances.
Zachary Shertzer, who was 2-3 in game one, gave the Mountaineers their first hit of the game with his double in the top of the fourth.
• Makayla Kelly scored the eventual game-winning goal with just 30 seconds left in the game and goalkeeper Dana Mirigliano made a brilliant save as time expired, and the Lock Haven lacrosse team secured a thrilling, 12-11, victory on the road at Frostburg State.
