Rumsey sisters earn gold, Bacorn takes fourth as Williamsport wins team title at Central Regional tournament

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Corespondent Williamsport's Lillian Rumsey tries to pin Bishop McDivitt's Lane Fordych in the 112 pound first place bout in the girls regional wrestling tournament at Milton High School Saturday. Rumsey won by fall.

MILTON — Lillian Rumsey of Williamsport doesn’t waste time to secure victories on the mat. That’s why she’s 32-0 and has won every contested bout by either fall or tech fall.

The Millionaire outlasted United’s Chloe Stiles by tech fall in Saturday’s Central Regional quarterfinal matchup, 26-11, 2:54, before a fast 38-seond fall against Gia Silva of Wallenpaupack in the semifinals.

But in the finals, Rumsey found herself in a spot she doesn’t normally end up: trailing in a match.

Rumsey faced Bishop McCort’s Lane Fordyce, the third-ranked wrestler in the state at 112 pounds. Fordyce controlled early and led 5-0 before Rumsey cut the deficit to 5-2. Rumsey would trail the entire second period, but then things started changing.

Rumsey never lost her cool, she kept focused at the task at hand and knew she had to keep pushing and fighting to get a win. Rumsey was able to strike at the right moment and get Fordyce onto the mat and finally turned for the fall as Fordyce couldn’t escape.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Hughesville's Ariahna Moore wrestles Williamsport's Danica Bacorn in the 100-pound third-place finals on Saturday at Milton.

“She’s a really tough opponent, but I tried to keep my cool so I didn’t get too frustrated,” Rumsey said. “I knew I had to push if I wanted to win.”

And that’s what Rumsey did. The Millionaire was one of three area wrestlers to win gold at the Central Regional tournament at Milton on Saturday afternoon. She joined her sister and teammate Marissa Rumsey (148) and Montgomery’s Emily Murphy (130) as gold medalists.

Central Mountain’s Kendall Wagner (170) and Jersey Shore’s Isabella Gottschall (190) both placed second, Hughesville’s Ariahna Moore (100) and Alexis Kurzawa (136) both were third-place finishers and Hughesville’s Julia Ritter (106) and Williamsport’s Danica Bacorn (100) both finished fourth.

In addition to the Millionaires having two first-place finishers and a bronze medalist, Williamsport won the team title at the regional tournament.

“It feels really good that all the work I put in finally paid off,” Lillian Rumsey said of winning regional gold.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Corespondent Hughesville's Julia Ritter wrestles Eden Eveleth of Bald Eagle Area in the 106 pound third-place bout in the girls regional wrestling tournament at Milton High School Saturday.

The 112 final between Rumsey and Fordyce featured two of the state’s top three ranked wrestlers as Rumsey (32-0) is No. 2 in Pennsylvania and Fordyce is No. 3 (26-4). So the Millionaire knew that it’d be an extremely tough matchup.

“I definitely did (know she was tough) because she’s a really good opponent,” Rumsey said, noting Fordyce’s strength was the hardest thing to counter against. “She’s really strong and she has good technique.”

Fordyce led 5-0 early in the first period before Rumsey cut the deficit to 5-2. In the second period, Rumsey got it to 5-4 by working hard for two points in the first 60 seconds of the period, but Forydyce was able to secure an escape to go up 7-4 before Rumsey got into control late and made it a 7-6 matchup.

Rumsey and Fordyce were tied at 8-8 in the third period before Rumsey started to get more control and take Fordyce down. That’s when Rumsey knew she had the match won.

“I could tell that she was kind of breaking when I was going (for shots), so I just knew if I pushed a little further, she would have broke,” Rumsey said.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Corespondent Emily Murphy won first place in the 130 pound bout of the girls regional wrestling tournament at Milton High School Saturday.

Murphy had an outstanding match at 130 in the finals for Montgomery. The Red Raider is ranked No. 3 in the state and faced No. 6-ranked Patron Plummer of Chestnut Ridge, pitting two top-10 wrestlers against each other at Milton. Murphy battled her well and it was evident it was a match where points wouldn’t come easy.

Murphy held a 2-0 lead early in the first period and didn’t allow Plummer to mount any offense. Murphy kept Plummer on the defense, trying to work out of moves, and led 4-0 before a medical forfeit ended the match, giving Murphy gold.

“It’s honestly so awesome. I knew the finals were going to be a tough match, but obviously it didn’t end in a great way, but I’m still proud I pulled through with the points I had,” Murphy said.

Murphy had to counter Plummer’s hand fighting, which the Red Raider noted was Plummer’s toughest part of her game.

“Her hand-fighting was really, really good, but I knew I had to clear ties the best I could,” Murphy said. “Honestly just staying in good position (was key to getting points). I don’t want to overthink any moves or get really sloppy, because then it just doesn’t end well.”

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Corespondent Emily Murphy controls Chesnut Ridge's Patron Plummer in then first place round of the 130 pound bout of the girls regional wrestling tournament at Milton High School Saturday.

While Lillian had to dig deep and battle to get that victory, her sister Marissa’s match was the exact opposite.

At the 148 finals, second-ranked Rumsey (29-1) shot low the second the whistle was blown against No. 9th-ranked Alahna Morris of Lake Lehman (20-8) and had Morris on the ground within two seconds. From there, it was all Marissa.

Marissa led 2-0 within 15 seconds of the match starting and rode Morris to prevent her from getting an escape or mounting a counter and led 5-0 going into the second period. Fifty-eight seconds later, Marissa secured the fall.

“I had confidence before, but taking her down immediately gave me a little bit more confidence,” Marissa said. “I’m able to attack really fast. She said she was very good at upper body and I watched it. She’s decent, so the shots were pretty much my strength.”

Marissa wasted no time at all on Saturday in her run through the 148 bracket. She began with a 36-second quarterfinal win before posting a 1:32 fall over Curwensville’s Gabrielle Bambarger in the semifinals.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Corespondent Emily Murphy shakes hands with Chesnut Ridge's Patron Plummer after Murphy won first place in the 130 pound bout of the girls regional wrestling tournament at Milton High School Saturday.

“I like to just get the match just done and over with as quick as I can,” Marissa said with a laugh.

Gottschall had an extremely tough matchup in the finals at 190. The Bulldog faced fourth-ranked Alyssa Favara of Bishop McCort. After Gottschall had a 2-minute fall in the quarterfinals, Gottschall managed to battle Emily Smith of Delaware Valley for a tough 3-1 decision victory.

Despite not being able to capture gold, Gottschall is still glad to be moving on with silver.

“I had more confidence today, less anxiety. I just went out and literally went out there and wrestled and put my heart into it and got what I gave,” Gottschall said. “I was pretty confident (coming in). My coach believed in me, my family believed in me. I have a big support system. It’s wrestling. I did my best and I tried my hardest.”

Central Mountain’s Wagner was pinned in 54 seconds against Punxsutawney’s Jael Miller in the finals at 170, giving the Wildcat silver at Saturday’s Central Regional in a matchup that pitted two top-5 ranked wrestlers against each other.

Wagner entered ranked No. 5 in the state at 170 while Miller (24-0) is ranked No. 1. Wagner got to the final by pinning Redbank Valley’s Makenna Monrean in nine seconds before picking up a pin over Athens’ Abigail Wagner in 4:48.

In the third-place match at 100, Hughesville’s Moore and Williamsport’s Bacorn faced off in a rematch from the District 4 tournament, with Moore securing a fall in 2:33. Hughesville’s Kurzawa pinned Selinsgrove’s Karissa Springer at 136 to take home a bronze medal.

Hughesville’s other medalist was Ritter, who took fourth at 106. The Spartan lost a tough matchup against Bald Eagle Area’s Eden Eveleth in which Eveleth did a solid job not allowing Ritter to mount a comeback bid.

“It’s so exciting, I can’t believe it. I’m really proud of myself,” Moore said of medaling. “I was pretty confident, but my side of the bracket was pretty difficult, but I pushed through and I’m really grateful.”

Hughesville’s Avery Puderbach finished fifth after picking up a 4-0 decision win at 118 in the fifth-place finals over West Branch’s Natalie Yingling. Milton’s Addy Bush (130) and Central Mountain’s Austynn Falls (136) both finished sixth. Williamsport’s Shanique Tidwell was pinned by Berwick’s Kaley Palmer in the 155 fifth-place finals to finish sixth as well.
