Rumsey sisters, Murphy hit ground running on first day of girls wrestling in Hershey

HERSHEY — At the first-ever PIAA Girls Championships, Williamsport and Montgomery each saw at least one wrestler advance to the state quarterfinals, with Marissa and Lillian Rumsey moving on for the Millionaires and Emily Murphy advancing for the Red Raiders.

For Williamsport, the sisters each pulled it off by pin, Marissa’s which came in just 20 seconds of match time against state-ranked Symarah Drey (Liberty). Lillian’s occurred early in the second period after the sophomore had racked up 12 points, each displaying two different degrees of dominance.

“I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far,” said Williamsport coach Kevin Werner when discussing the Rumseys. “They’re both healthy, they’re working hard, they’ve been working on cleaning up a couple little things here and there, and this is probably the best I’ve ever seen them wrestle.”

Each enters the state tournament having run the table at districts and regionals, possessing plentiful momentum, poise and postseason experience. The Rumseys previously attended the tournament last year, with Marissa taking second at 142 and Lillian taking third at 106. Marissa won a state title as a sophomore.

She’ll look to keep the prospect of her attaining a second one alive tomorrow, as Lillian pursues her first.

CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Lillian Rumsey wrestles against Canon-McMillan’s Malia Ramos at their bout at 112 pounds in Hershey for the PIAA championships. Rumsey won with a fall in 2:31.

Fellow Millionaire Danica Bacorn was dealt a tough draw to kick off her first appearance at states, facing top-seeded and 2023 state champion Valarie Solorio in her states debut. Even with the unnerving prospect, she didn’t appear fazed heading into the match, giving a strong effort and falling by pin towards the end of the first period.

“We knew she had a tough draw coming in, but she didn’t seem too rattled about it,” said Werner on Bacorn. “Just wrestled to have fun and did well, took a couple of shots and kind of got overextended. But she’s a competitor, so I’m looking forward to her coming back and placing.”

Following a relatively quiet first period, Montgomery junior Emily Murphy found the opening she was looking for, turning a top reset and 2-0 lead to start the second period into match-winning pin and advancement to PIAA state quarterfinals.

It was a patient display of controlled aggression, one typical of what we’ve seen from the junior throughout the season. Though Murphy acknowledged the nerves that came with being and competing at the Giant Center, they never showed throughout the bout.

“It’s pretty scary and nerve-wracking. So many people and everything,” said Murphy on the atmosphere. “Just have to stay calm and focus on wrestling and doing what I do.”

CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Marissa Rumsey wrestles against Liberty’s Symarah Drey at 148 pounds in Hershey at the PIAA championships. Rumsey pinned Drey in 20 seconds.

On the back of her second straight regional title, it was important to establish momentum from the jump. Murphy did a decent job of doing just that while not overshooting, focusing on keeping her hand fighting and footwork consistent and striking openings whenever they popped up.”

“Probably keeping up my hand fighting and trying to get angles and running my feet,” said Murphy on what worked for her. “If I were to stop running my feet, it probably wouldn’t have gone how I wanted it to.”

She heads into quarterfinals with plenty of confidence, looking to avenge her state title loss from last season.

“My confidence is high. I feel good where I’m at,” said Murphy. “This is honestly just amazing to see all these girls here competing.”

Though Hughesville didn’t advance any of its four state qualifiers, it’ll have plenty to keep an eye out for as the Lady Spartans try to work their way through consolations. Ariahna Moore (100), Julie Ritter (106) and Alexis Kurzawa (138) will look to keep their runs alive as long as possible.

With that in mind, the focus shifts to Day 2.
