Sophomore Noah Miller fired eight innings of two-hit ball to lift the Lycoming College baseball team to a 4-1 win over Saint Vincent College, the program's first win at brand-new Brandon Park Baseball Field to start a doubleheader on Sunday. The Warriors lost the second game in extra innings, 10-2.
Miller (3-4) tossed eight innings, throwing 100 pitches and striking out three. He retired the first nine batters in order, retired six in a row in the fourth and fifth after the lone run he allowed scored in the fourth, and benefitted from double plays in the sixth and seventh. He retired six of the last five batters he faced as well.
The Warriors (6-25 overall) rallied from a run down in the fourth inning by scoring three runs. Senior Joey Trout led off with a walk, took second on a passed ball and tied the game when sophomore Zachary Pleska lined a double off the third baseman's glove. After a hit batter and sac bunt, sophomore Zach Kudlacik delivered a two-RBI single into right center.
In the sixth, senior Kenny Nichols led off with a double to left center. After a hit batter and a walk loaded the bases, junior Evan Mok delivered a sac fly to bring in the Warriors' fourth run.
Sophomore Nick Reeder, a Montoursville graduate, went 2 for 4 and Nichols was 2-for-3 with a run and a double to pace the Warriors. Freshman Grayson Rinker, a Montoursville graduate, earned his second save, allowing one runner to reach via error in the ninth.
Mansfield split a home doubleheader against Kutztown, losing the first contest, 13-2, before bouncing back for a 5-1 win in game two.
In game one, Cole Serfass' single gave the Mounties an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first driving in Zachary Shertzer after his lead-off single. Kutztown tied the game with a solo home run in the top of the second.
The Golden Bears jumped ahead in the third with their second homer of the day, this time a two-run shot to give KU a 3-1 lead.
Mansfield Starter Ryan King was replaced by Austin Beauchamp in the top of the fourth inning with runners on second and third and just one out.
Game two starter Eric Gustofson needed just 11 pitches to retire the Golden Bears in order in the top of the first. Ryan Sekulski singled to get the offense started in game two, Cole Serfass followed with a walk and Jacob Houtz was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out.
Ryan Verbonitz brought in the first run of the ballgame with a sacrifice fly to score Sekulski and give Mansfield a 1-0 lead.
• Sophomore Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate, had three hits and two triples to lead the Lycoming College softball team, which fell to Lebanon Valley College, 2-1 and 1-0, in a pair of non-conference games.
Alexander drove in junior pinch-runner Jackie Snyder, a Williamsport graduate, with a fifth-inning, two-out game-tying triple in the first game after Lebanon Valley (26-6 overall) scored a first-inning run. Snyder came on after sophomore Hailee Sobieski was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.
Those were the only runners to reach third in the game, as Jordan Walter (13-4) completed a four-hitter, walking two and striking out one. The Flying Dutchmen won the game when Julia Craig singled in Sam Burns in the bottom of the seventh.
Junior Avery Eiswerth (5-6) allowed 12 hits in six-plus innings, walking one and striking out four.
In the second game, Erin Sinatra (13-2) threw a six-hit shutout, walking one and striking out eight, spoiling a five-hitter from senior Kylie Russell, a Jersey Shore graduate, (8-3), as she allowed one run and struck out one.
Mansfield went 1-1 in a doubleheader against Shepherd, losing the first contest (12-0) before blanking Shepherd in game two, 2-0.
Through the first three innings in game one, Shepherd posted the first three runs of the afternoon, with three RBI singles. A solo shot in the top of the sixth brought the Ram lead to 4-0.
Shepherd capitalized in the final inning, sending eight batters across home plate to cement a 12-0 advantage before earning their 12th PSAC victory of the season.
A strong defensive start held the two eastern members scoreless through the first two innings in the second game, with Annabella Putnam striking out the side in the top of the second.
Mansfield earned the first run off a Fallon Kelley RBI single in the bottom of the third, scoring Kayla Vonstein as the Mounties held the 1-0 edge.
• Adam Stavrakas and Brendan McDonald both won singles matches at love, and Tim Zelikovsky won his 28th match of the season on his Senior Day, as the Bucknell men's tennis blanked Lafayette, 7-0. The Bison finished the regular season with a 15-6 record, hitting the 15-win mark in each of coach Jason Cohen's first two seasons at the helm, and they will take a 4-2 conference record into next week's Patriot League Tournament.
Bucknell conceded only four games on the way to a sweep of the three doubles matches, and then McDonald (No. 5) and Stavrakas (No. 2) both needed fewer than 50 minutes to win their singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 counts. No. 1 man Amar Tahirovic was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Arman Ganchi to clinch the decisive fourth point.
At No. 6, Bison freshman Will Robinson dropped his first set 6-4 to Sam Gelber, but then Robinson dominated from there. He won the second set 6-0 and took the third-set super tiebreaker by a 10-3 count.
• Sophomore Paige Richter fired a 3-over-par 73 to earn her second straight All-Patriot League medal, and the Bucknell women's golf team compiled its second straight 306 to finish in fifth place at the Patriot League Championship.
Richter birdied the par-5 9th and 15th holes on the way to her 73, which was Bucknell's low round of the week and the fourth-lowest score in the field on Sunday. Richter finished alone in seventh place with a 54-hole total of 226 (76-77-73). She also finished T-7th at last year's championship at Independence GC in Virginia.
Also for Bucknell on Sunday, freshman Nicole Yun made 13 pars on the way to a 75, and freshmen Lila Smith and Katherine Vice both shot 79. Freshman Sofia Nogalo made three straight birdies on holes 9-10-11 but struggled down the stretch and finished with an 80, and senior Kelsey Yi closed out her Bison career with an 81.
