West End's 13-16-year-old all-star team opened the Mid-Atlantic Regional tournament in Mifflin County strong, defeating Maryland in a five-inning rout, 14-0, in the first contest before beating Union City New Jersey in a five-inning, mercy-ruled game, 15-5, in the second game.
In the second contest, the game was scoreless after the first inning before West End scored seven runs to break the game open and scored three runs over the next two innings. Union City New Jersey would cut the deficit to 13-5 in the top of the fifth inning, but West End put the game away via the mercy rule with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Cameron Spangler went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and Briar Persing was 2 for 3 with two RBIs, two runs scored and a walk. Wyatt Bair was walked twice and scored twice.
James Carpenter had a monster game, going 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Cole Deitrick had a double, as did Spangler and Parker Bennett while Persing hit a triple.
Zane Rogers, LJ Hill, Camden March and Mason Hess all collected a single as well.
Detrick threw three innings and earned the win, striking out five and not allowing a hit or run. Bair, Trey Damschroder and Hill all came in relief to close the game.
With the two wins on Friday, West End is guaranteed a top seed in the elimination portion of the tournament as either a No. 1 or No. 2, and plays again in Sunday's semifinals.
A win in the semifinal on Sunday afternoon will advance West End to the championship game on Sunday night at 7 p.m.
West End opened the first game with a four-run first inning for a quick lead and cruised from there. West End led 7-0 after two innings and broke the game wide open with six runs in the third to go ahead, 13-0.
Bair, Gio White and Deitrick all had big games with each collecting two hits. White was 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, Bair was 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored and Deitrick led West End with four RBIs while going 2 for 2 with a run scored.
In total, West End had nine hits. Carpenter was 1 for 2 with a walk and hit, Persing went 1 for 2 and scored a run and Lucas Naughton went 1 for 2 with two RBIs and scored twice.
White belted two doubles, Persing had a double and both Detrick and Naughton hit home runs.
Persing and Hill combined on the mound in a one-hit shutout performance. Persing earned the win with three innings thrown. He struck out seven, didn't allow a hit and had just one walk. Hill relieved him in the fourth and gave up just a single with four strikeouts and no walks.
West End plays Union City New Jersey in the second game of regionals at 4 p.m. today.
