West End 15-16s win opener at Babe Ruth state tournament over Ridley

West End’s 15-16-year-old all-star team earned an opening win at the Pennsylvania state tournament against Ridley, 11-1, in six innings. The game was held at Logue Field.

Ridley was limited to just one hit and committed eight errors in the loss. Briar Persing threw a great game, striking out nine and allowing just one hit — a triple. Trey Damschroder pitched the final two-thirds of the inning in the sixth, striking out two. Neither pitcher issued a walk.

Ridley took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but that lead was extremely short-lived as West End scored five in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. West End would then lead 7-1 after there innings.

Persing led West End’s offense as well, going 2 for 3 with a double, three RBIs and scored twice. Parker Bennett went 1 for 2 with a walk and run, Mason Hess was 1 for 1 with a run, Gio White was 1 for 4 with a run and both Wyatt Bair and Zane Rogers had singles.

Cole Deietrick had two RBIs and Lucas Naughton crossed the plate three times.

West End will play again on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. against Altoona. The state tournament quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Monday with the state championship game set for Tuesday.
