RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montgomery's Lincoln Miller reaches for a pass during last week’s game vs. Hughesville.
Warrior Run PPG–28, PPA–21, YPG–319, YPA–321
Warrior Run notes: Warrior Run is coming off its first season opening win since 2019 and did it in impressive fashion, rallying from seven down in the fourth quarter to defeat Muncy, 28-21. Warrior Run handed Muncy just its second regular season loss in three seasons and took over up front in the fourth quarter when it scored 14 straight points. The defense did not allow a second-half point with linebackers Eli Butler and Colby LeBarron each topping 10 tackles. Defensive end Isaiah Betz added eight as did Cohen Zechman who clinched the win when he recovered a pooch kickoff in the closing seconds. LeBarron and Butler ran well and hard throughout the fourth quarter and Sam Hall moved into third on the area’s career yardage list in the 2000s, going for five catches, 144 yards and a touchdown. James Keifer played well in his first start, calmly running the offense and Warrior Run scored on two of its first three possessions.
Warrior Run player to watch–Garrett Williams: The sophomore is one of Warrior Run’s young, talented linemen and, alongside fellow sophomore Jackson Albright, made a big impact against Muncy. He was part of the line which asserted itself on consecutive fourth quarter touchdown drives, while collecting a sack and five tackles.
Montgomery PPG–7, PPA–14, YPG–218, YPA–212
Montgomery notes: Montgomery looks like a much improved team and pushed Hughesville hard in its opener last Saturday. The Red Raiders fought back from a 14-0 halftime deficit, tied it in the third and moved to the Spartan 15 in the final minute before falling short. Still, it was an encouraging performance for a team which is young in age but experienced in terms of having a lot of starters back. Hayden Wilt and Ethan Tupper also played well after returning to the team this season. The line played especially well in the second half on both sides of the ball and held Hughesville to just 63 yards and three first downs. Briar Persing produced a sack and recovered a fumble, while Montgomery held Hughesville to under four yards per carry rushing. Senior Coy Bryson made 12 tackles and also produced his third straight 100-yard game going back to last season. The Raiders also almost threw for more yards last week than they did all season with Parker Persing being efficient and Wilt tying for an area-high six catches.
Montgomery player to watch–Braiden Winter: The senior was a difference-maker on both lines against Hughesville. He frequently was making tackles or setting up linebackers for plays near or behind the line of scrimmage and also frequently pressured the quarterback. He also was part of an offensive line which came alive in the second half and helped Bryson run for 82 of his 101 yards.
Outlook: Montgomery looks like it is building something good. It might not show on the scoreboard tonight, but this is a team trending in the right direction and Warrior Run will have to fight for a win.
