Muncy cruises past Cowanesque Valley in win at home

It was a beautiful evening for Friday night football at Stanley T. Schuyler Memorial Stadium in Muncy and everything went Muncy’s way in a lopsided 45-25 win at home.

Muncy shot out of the gate by starting its first drive with a deep pass from quarterback Stiles Eyer that connected with tight end Benjamin Hamilton for a gain of 40 yards. Despite the early fireworks from the passing game, Muncy stuck with their run game as they normally do.

"Everyone knows we love to run," said Muncy coach Sean Tetreault. "We are lucky to have two great running backs, and they hit the holes hard tonight."

Following the deep pass, Muncy never looked back as they punched in the touchdown with a couple of big runs by Austin Johnson early in the first quarter. The senior running back would rush 10 more times for a total of 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns throughout the rest of the game.

Cowanesque struggled to find their rhythm early with two turnovers on their first two drives.

"We were making mistakes that we don't normally make," Cowanesque Valley coach Jacob Lane said about the first-quarter struggles.

Muncy continued to run the ball well throughout the first half, scoring five times on the ground. Three of these scores were courtesy of Landyn Wommer, who was not to be denied, scoring on each of his three carries.

Pairing a powerful run attack with a team trying to find its footing resulted in a score of 45-6 after the first half. The two-headed running game — led by Austin Johnson and Landyn Wommer — was too much for the Cowanesque defense to handle.

Coming out of the break, the Cowanesque Valley Indians looked like a completely different team. They marched down the field, led by big passing plays from their quarterback Graham Hess, and punctuated the drive with a touchdown connection to wide receiver Jeavon Eick early in the second half.

When asked about the halftime adjustments, Lane said, "I just told them to have fun … we are a young team, and I thought we needed to stop overthinking."

As Muncy rested its starters in the second half, Cowanesque put together a string of scoring drives. Christen Perdomo led the way for Cowanesque in the third quarter, rushing for 88 yards during the latter part of the contest.

It wasn't just the offensive efforts that improved during the half; the defense looked much better as well. They held the potent Muncy offense scoreless in the second half, leaving the Cowanesque Indians with a foundation to build on in the coming weeks.

Despite the halftime improvements, the early domination by Muncy was too much to overcome for Cowanesque, as Muncy coasted to victory. Muncy now improves to 2-1 on the year as they look to build off an outstanding regular season from last year. Meanwhile, Cowanesque slides to 0-3 to start the season.

As both teams prepare for next week, they take diverging paths. Muncy aims to make it three wins in a row against Northwest, while Cowanesque will look to their game against Sayre to get into the win column and right the ship.
