Lewisburg swimming has to replace standouts Shannon, Ordonez

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lewisburg is without six-time state gold medalist Kimmy Shannon, who graduated. Shannon is the only swimmer in area history to earn six gold medals at the PIAA championships.

It’s more than difficult to replace a really talented swimmer. Even harder to do when you lose two standouts.

But to lose two swimmers of the caliber Lewisburg did is a huge void that isn’t close to being able to replace.

Lewisburg lost Kimmy Shannon and Mason Ordonez, two extremely decorated swimmers and among the best to ever wear a Lewisburg uniform.

Ordonez was a two-time state qualifier the past two seasons and took home numerous District 4 medals in his career.

Shannon needs little introduction. She is a six-time state gold medalist, and is the only area swimmer to claim six gold medals at the state meet, ending her career with eight state medals (two silvers). Add to her roughly dozen district medals, and Shannon showcased how talented she was every time she got into the starting blocks at a pool.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Mason Ordonez was a two-time state qualifier last year in individual events and is another standout swimmer the Green Dragons have to replace this winter, joining standout Kimmy Shannon who graduated.

But while replacing those two caliber of swimmers is nearly impossible, Lewisburg does have plenty returning who bring back valuable district experience and will look to make impacts this year to help Lewisburg remain successful. And both Shannon and Ordonez’s leadership no doubt rubbed off on younger swimmers last winter.

Ordonez and Shannon were Lewisburg’s only two state qualifiers individually last year, but Miles Fassero and Ethan Zeh are both back and were all district qualifiers last winter in two events for the boys team. On the girls side, Lewisburg returns Skylar Crosby, Emma Hopkinson, Jillian Muchler, Lucy MItchell and Jillie Donner. All of them except Mitchell were two-time district qualifiers last year.

Davis and Riley, both of whom graduated, were two-event district qualifiers last year as Davis swam the 50 free and 100 breast and Riley swam the 50 free and 200 IM.

Fassero was a two-time qualifier in the 100 fly and 100 breast. Zeh swam the 200 free and 500 free. Crosby swam the 50 free and 100 back, Hopkinson swam the 100 fly and 100 free, Muchler swam the 100 fly and 100 back and Donner swam in both the 200 IM and 100 breast.

Having that many returning district qualifiers gives the Green Dragons experience in various events. Lewisburg is perennially a strong swimming program each year, and this year will be no different with the talent throughout the roster.

Every year, Lewisburg has countless swimmers reach the podium at the District 4 championships. Expect this winter to be more of the same.
