At the Dandy Duals in Towanda, No. 16-ranked Montgomery went 4-2 with wins over Honesdale (42-28), Jersey Shore (46-19), Wilkes_Barre (52-18) and Wyoming (64-12), and fell to Bald Eagle Area (38-25) and host Towanda, (36-30), who’s ranked NO. 12.
Montgomery standout Brandt Harer (139 pounds) was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
A run of three straight wins at 189, 215 and 285 helped Bald Eagle Area secure a win against Montgomery in what was a tight match.
Brandt Harer earned a 49-second fall for the Red Raiders at 139 over Easton Grimes. Manny Stoltzfus pinned Liam Corey in 3:42 and Montgomery saw Liam Seeley with a 49-second pin at 114 over Tyler Corey.
Montgomery won six bouts by fall against Honesdale as Stoltzfus (107), Liam Seeley (114), Porter Hall (121), Carden Wagner (133), Max Furman III (152) and Cameron Woltz (160) won via fall. Seeley had a fall in just 28 seconds and Woltz had the quickest fall against Honesdale, doing so in just 19 seconds.
Montgomery’s Brandt Harer dominated at 139 against Jersey Shore’s Louden Spotts, accumulating 15 points in just 55 seconds to secure a tech fall in the first period. Montgomery’s AJ Kroft pinned Mazen Lupton in 5:10. At 160, Jersey Shore’s Jonathan Dincher earned a 11-5 decision over Cameron Woltz. The Bulldogs’ Slate Sechrist won at 215 by fall over Evan Hugar in 1:18. At 285, it was Jersey Shore’s Kaden Walker securing a major decision win against Layne Gingery, 9-1.
The Red Raiders gave the Black Knights a run, but five wins in six bouts from 152-285 helped Towanda secure the win. Stoltzfus pinned Mason Harbst at 107 in 53 seconds. Harer recorded another first-period tech fall by beating Gage Evans 15-0, 1:24. Montgomery’s AJ Kroft battled at 145 to secure a narrow 3-1 decision against Wyatt Stranger in a tough contest.
Coy Bryson pinned Wilkes-Barre’s Ethan Osmanski at 189 and at 215, Montgomery’s Evan Hugar secured a fall over Wilkes-Barre’s Gaven Griffith in 3:41. The Red Raiders won four straight bouts between 133 and 152 with bonus points, securing 22 points in those four matches alone.
Those wins came from Wagner (tech fall), Harer (tech fall), Kroft (pin) and Furman III (pin).
Jersey Shore lost to Towanda (64-5).
Against the Black Knights, the Bulldogs’ win came at 107 pounds where Bradley Derr defeated Mason Herbst by tech fall, 17-0, 5:13. The win cut the deficit to 10-5, but Towanda would win out from there, never letting the Bulldogs get it any closer.
Jersey Shore’s Riley Kanski lost a tough bout at 189 when Zach Lantz defeated Kanski by decision, 5-2.
Jersey Shore had four wins against the Raiders, one of which was via forfeit.
Hughesville had success at its own Spartan Duals Tournament on Saturday as the Spartans went 6-0 in competition to win the tournament title and improve to 7-0 through dual-meet competition.
Hughesville defeated Lackawanna Trail (57-12), Sullivan County (53-15), Wyoming Valley West (54-18), Mid-Valley Secondary Charter (52-14), Wellsboro (66-6) and Northeast Bradford (56-9).
Against Wyoming Valley West, Hughesville’s Kile Hartman pinned Iszrel Davis in 2 minutes, 27 seconds and Keagan Smith earned a close 4-3 decision win at 152. Conor Knight pinned Daniel Seip of Wyoming Valley West at 1:46 in 172 and at 215, Luke Stutzman earned a 40-second pin over Adian Fedor.
In the Spartans’ dual vs. Wellsboro, Ethan Wodrig pinned Vincent Arena at 121 in 3:39 and Wesley Harvey secured a fall over Mason Nowak in 1:52. The Spartans also received pin wins by Kile Hartman (145), Keagan Smith (152), Mason Mordan (160), Conor Knight (172), Wyatt Gavitt (189), Luke Stutzman (215) and Hayden Stevens (285).
Mordan pinned Tucker Evans of Sullivan County in 54 seconds and Knight had a fall in 67 seconds at 172 over Riggin McGowen of Sullivan County. The Griffins’ Andrew Kapec pinned Casey Mook at 127 in 3:33. Hughesville’s Hartman had a tech fall win at 145 against Nate Christopher, 18-3, 3:52. Smith pinned John Tabor in 31 seconds at 152.
In the Spartans’ dual against Northeast Bradford, Harvey pinned Kelton Raymond in 44 seconds at 139 while Hartman earned a fall in 3:35 at 145. At 152, Smith had another fall, this time pinning Russell Martin in 65 seconds while Mordan pinned Kale Howland in 1:50 at 160.
Hughesville saw Chase Shaner at 133 earn a 60-second pin against Mid-Valley Secondary Charter’s Garret MacDonald. Harvey defeated Mid-Valley Secondary Charter’s Gabe James with a 17-2, 5:40 tech fall win.
Against Lackawanna Trail, the Spartans earned six victories via fall, including from Shaner (133), Harvey (139) and Hartman (145).
The Spartans have two big duals coming up this week with a Wednesday meeting at Montgomery before hosting Benton on Thursday.
• Hughesville competed at the Queen of the Hill Tournament. The Spartans did well overall, placing second in the tournament with 186.5 points, behind only Easton’s 213.5. In total, 22 teams competed.
Hughesville had two individual champions, a runner-up and a bronze medalist with ten wrestlers taking top-six finishes.
Julia Ritter had a dominant day for Hughesville with three falls and a tech fall to win the 100-pound bracket. Avery Earnest had three pins on her way to the 142 title. Ariahna Moore, a returning state qualifier, placed second at 112 and returning state qualifier Lexi Kurzawa placed third at 155.
At 106, Bella Olshefskie took fourth, Bella Young at 118 took fifth and Abbi Bowman took fourth at 136. Hughesville also saw Caroline Hicks finish fifth at 155. Both Ava Swisher and Jatiah Peterkin took sixth at 190 and heavyweight, respectively.
Hughesville saw success in the junior high tournament as well as the team took third and had eight top-3 place winners including champion Jaysa Kiess at 110 and Peyton Miller at 103.
• Alaina Dadzie scored 18 points and Loyalsock played outstanding defense as it defeated Class 6A Cedar Crest, 34-24 at the Elizabethtown Women’s Basketball Showcase Saturday afternoon. The Lancers (4-0) opened the game on an 11-3 run and never allowed more than nine points in a quarter.
Dadzie, playing against a Colgate recruit at center, added seven rebounds. Lacey Kriebel had eight points with three assists. Jaekairah Harden added three steals and Julie Ellis six points.
Nadirah Tutler scored an impressive 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as Williamsport fell at the Magic Dome to Selinsgrove, 53-45. The Seals scored double digit points in all four quarters.
Erika Piepzowski had 15 points for the Seals while Lissa Kruskie and Kristin Shaffer each scored 12.
Peyton Dincher scored 24 points to lead Jersey Shore, but the Bulldogs fell to Central Dauphin, 44-34. Hannah Heaton scored four points for the Bulldogs.
Olivia Green led Central Dauphin with 18 points.
Lewisburg defeated Mifflin County, 55-42. Maddy Moyers led the Green Dragons with a 20-point performance and Tegan Osunde added 17. Mifflin County led 12-9 after the first quarter, but the Green Dragons used a 21-point second quarter to go ahead.
Faridah Aboueid had five assists and egiht rebounds and Teagan Osunde had six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Addyson Shedleski grabbed eight rebounds as well.
Maddie Smith scored 10 points and Alli Anstadt added nine as Hughesville defeated Schuylkill Haven, 36-33. The Spartans played solid in the fourth quarter, limiting Schuylkill Haven to just two points.
Cecelia Coombe scored 21 points for Danville, nearly outscoring Montoursville herself, as the Ironmen defeated the Warriors, 45-22. Emily George led Montoursville with eight points.
Danville held a 10-point lead after the first quarter and took a 27-10 lead to halftime.
• Jersey Shore stormed back from a 10-point deficit with five minutes remaining and Ben Dalton blocked a last-second shot as it defeated rival Selinsgrove, 61-60, in boys basketball. Dalton finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, recording his second straight double-double.
Caden Jolin was strong off the bench, scoring 12 points and hitting a key fourth quarter 3-pointer. Carson Watkins added nine points and Jersey Shore evened its record at 2-2.
Cayden Smithkors scored a team-high 14 points and Ryan Murray added 10 as Sullivan County posted a 30-point win over Benton, 52-22. The Griffins led 22-5 after the first quarter and limited Benton to seven or fewer points in each quarter.
Colin King added seven points and five rebounds. Smithkors had five boards and three steals while Murray grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Lewisburg defeated Mifflin County, 62-43. Neyshawn Mabry scored a team-high 24 points to lift Lewisburg past Mifflin County, 62-43. Cooper Mowry scored 17 points and Tai Britto contributed 10.
• The Lock Haven indoor women's track and field team returned to action this weekend and competed in the River Hawk Early Season Invite and Multi hosted by Susquehanna. The River Hawk Early Season Invite and Multi was held at the Robert I. Estill Field House in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania.
The contingent of Havana Gordon, Makayla Weber, Elizabeth Shultz, and Aubrey Sechrist led the way in the opening track event in the sprint medley relay and finished with a time of 4:25.48 that was good for second place on the day and third all-time in the record books.
Regan Irons brought home gold in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.58 meters (5-2 1/4), qualifying for the PSAC Championship. Kaydence Strange placed second in her opening competition of her freshman campaign with a time of 10:54.19.
Shultz had a third-place performance in her opening 400-meter dash of the year, running a time of 1:02.98.
• The Lock Haven indoor men's track and field team returned to action this weekend and competed in the River Hawk Early Season Invite and Multi hosted by Susquehanna. Ryan Miller led the way on the track for Lock Haven after taking first place and hitting a PSAC mark in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.42.
Eric Zalar led the way in the field where he threw 57-2 3/4 feet in the weight throw taking first place and throwing for a PSAC qualifying mark.
Another PSAC qualifying mark came from Matthew Muthler who jumped to third place in the high jump with a height of 6-3 1/2 feet.
The quartet of Nick Bellomo, Jorge Santana, Matt Reinard and Josiah Schans took second place in the sprint medley relay with a time of 3:54.57. Dylan Cassetori, Jaden Wright, Lucca Capparelli and Lorenzo Thompson placed third in the same event with a time of 3:57.31.
