Local roundup: Zion Hughes’ career-high 23 isn’t quite enough as WAHS boys fall to Wilkes-Barre
Sophomore Zion Hughes scored a career-high 23 points and Williamsport pushed District 2-4 Class 6A current No. 2 seed Wilkes-Barre hard on the road, dropping a hard-fought 54-49 contest. Hughes also made three 3-pointers. Kyreek Bradshaw scored 12 points and Micah Washington 10 for the Millionaires who return home for the first time in nearly three weeks Saturday night when they host Altoona.
A strong second half helped Montoursville hold off Milton in a tight contest, 51-47. The Warriors had a pair of double-digit scorers help lead the way in Jimmy Mussina and Elijah Eck, who both scored 10.
Brennan Imbro and Shea Ulmer added nine each for Montoursville. Milton was led by Rylin Scott’s 22-point effort while Chase Knarr added eight points.
• In girls basketball, Northeast Bradford beat North Penn-Liberty, 66-41, on the road. Kaylee Graham scored 16 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals for Liberty. Haley Litzelman posted another double-double, this time with 14 points, 18 rebounds, five assists and two blocks.
Kendall Graham had six points and Olivia Smith had five points with eight boards. Northeast Bradford was led by Leah Beebe’s 19 points.
North Penn-Mansfield scored 30 second-half points to pull away from Wellsboro, 41-25. Mansfield had just one player reach double figures in Claire Dominick, who scored 11. Mansfield also saw Reagan Watkins add nine points.
Wellsboro was led by Paige Logsdon’s 12 points.
Wellsboro held a narrow 15-11 lead at the break, but Mansfield took the lead in the third quarter after outscoring the Green Hornets, 13-7. Kameron Lightner had a team-high 18 rebounds for Mansfield.
Canton and Cowanesque Valley went back-and-forth throughout Thursday’s game but Canton held on late for a 49-42 Northern Tier victory.
Canton saw three players reach double figures as Kendall Kitchen led the Warriors wtih 15 points. Lydia Roupp scored 13 points and Cailyn VanNoy added 10. Cowanesque Valley was led by Ashley Woodrig’s 12 points, Starr Ordway’s 11 and Lily Vargeson’s nine.
• Williamsport edged Central Mountain in varsity bocce ball action, 2-1. It was the regular-season finale for the Wildcats.
Central Mountain took the first frame for an early 1-0 lead. The second frame was close, but Williamsport got the win before winning the golden frame. Central Mountain had the points until the last roll from the Millionaires.
• Junior Katryn Yocum earned All-Academic Athlete honors for the second time, becoming the first Lycoming College women’s cross country runner to receive the honor twice, and for the seventh time in program history, the Lycoming men’s and women’s cross country teams each received All-Academic Team honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
To qualify for the All-American recognition, teams must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 out of a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, among other qualifiers. For individuals to earn All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 (out of a 4.0 scale) and finish within the top 25 percent in their respective regional championship meet.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams repeated the honor, after earning it in 2023.
Six athletes on the women’s cross country team received Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll accolades this year. Yocum became the first runner in program history to earn four all-conference honors in a career after she finished 12th in the Landmark Conference Championships, earning Second Team All-Conference honors. At the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, Yocum broke her own program record by finishing the 6K race with a time of 22:34.4, placing 39th in the field of 218 runners. All of Lycoming’s runners set personal-best times at the regional and the team placed 22nd out of 30 teams.
The Warrior men, who had four Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll selections, finished in 27th place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals for sixth-year coach Katie Sick.
Two members of the Lock Haven men’s cross country team earned 2024 NCAA Division II U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Individual All-Academic honors and the Bald Eagles earned the team award.
As a team, the Lock Haven men earned 2024 USTFCCA Team All-Academic Honors with a team cumulative GPA of 3.277.
Jakob Rager earned his second straight individual. He placed 38th at the Atlantic Region Championship meet by crossing the finish line in 31:42.6. Williamson graduate Kristian Mizdail placed 56th at the region meet with a finish of 32:21.
For Lock Haven’s women’s team, the Bald Eagles also won the team award while three individual members were honored.
Kaydence Strange placed 43rd (22:23.9) at the Atlantic Region Championships. Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Sechrist placed 34th at the Region Championships with a run of 22:15.6. Nicole Carroll ran a 25:53.9 at the Region Championships, placing 70th.
• Marcus Quaker, Jackson Doughty, Ibrahim Sheriff, and Cahsid Raymond set a new 4×200 meter relay school record to highlight Mansfield at the RIT Thursday Night Meet. The quartet won the event that closed out the meet with a time of 1:32.52. The time bests the record that was set back in 2008.
Quaker had a breakout night finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55. He would also finish second in the high jump with the third highest mark in program history of 1.87 meters.
Jerry Holmes Jr. finished fifth with a best mark of 1.77 meters, and Seth Neal finished 14th with a jump of 1.62 meters.
Neal would also take the victory in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:42.54.
On the women’s side, Mansfield finished with 12 top-10 places.
Zalayna Brown opened the meet with a ninth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.55 and Alexa Miller in 19th (13.11).
Brown and Marissa Allen took chances at high jump for the first time in their collegiate careers, with marks of (eighth, 1.37 meters) and (sixth, 1.42 meters). Allen raced the 800-meter collecting a personal best of 2:33.13 for eighth, followed by a best from Libby Moore of 3:07.29 for 22nd.
Moore also competed in the mile taking sixth in the event with another personal time of 6:56.93. Madison Ziska lead the team in long jump with a mark of 5.11 meters taking fourth place, while Alexis McNitt made her debut with 3.83 in 24th place.
Ziska (fifth, 8.28) and McNitt (19th, 9.01) were joined in the 60-meter dash by fellow sprinters Makayla Robicheaux, Sandra Lemus and Alexa Miller. Personal bests were collected by Robicheaux (10th, 8.57), Lemus (15th, 8.76) and Miller (25th, 10.08).
