Montgomery beats Warrior Run in dual in front of a packed crowd

By GARRETT CARR 6 min read

Standout Montgomery junior Manny Stoltzfus got his 100th career win in the most anticlimactic way to start Friday's dual meet against fellow District 4 powerhouse Montgomery. A dual-opening forfeit put Montgomery up 6-0. As anticlimactic as the weight class of the night was, the next weight was one that both coaches thought could defend the dual.

Montgomery freshman Liam Seeley set the tone for the dual meet, beating fellow talented freshman Chase Wirnsberger, 12-7. The Red Raiders never looked back, as they won, 42-26, in front of a near-capacity crowd at Warrior Run on Tuesday night.

"Liam wrestled great. Liam’s getting better every day in the room, and people forget he’s never been a part of (a team), so he’s never had structure and he has that now, and he just keeps making huge jumps and gains. We're excited about it but, I mean, still a lot to work on for him doing. He’s making huge, huge jumps," Montgomery coach Denny Harer said.

Montgomery's early success in the dual meet silenced a packed house full of fans wearing blue and white. After Seeley's win, Porter Hall used an early takedown in the second period to immediately start working for a fall to put Montgomery up 15-0. And, after another Warrior run forfeit, Montgomery was out to a 21-0 lead.

Warrior Run's Caden Snyder broke open a close match in the third period and earned a fall to get Warrior Run on the board. But back-to-back pins by Red Raiders in AJ Kroft at 139 pounds and Brandt Harer at 145 in a combined 48 seconds of match time followed by another Warrior Run forfeit at 152 put Montgomery up 39-3 to clinch the dual with just five weights left before the Defenders even got to the meat out of their lineup.

Even in the matches that Montgomery lost on Tuesday, they fought hard to preserve team points. State title contenders Reagan Milheim and Mix Wirnsberger both notched technical falls at 160 and 172, respectively, but Harer was more than pleased to see both Cameeron Woltz and Raiden Felix fight off of their backs to save team points.

"Attitude and effort. We preach it every day, toughness, attitude and effort. Pick a fight, win a fight, go out and do your best. It’s not always about winning and losing. You know, people get all caught up in the winning and losing. This sport's a combat. It’s not always about that. It’s about your attitude, your effort, giving 100%,  take the fight, win the fight, and if you don’t, that’s okay. We come back and we get better, and our guys buy into that, and they believe it. And win or lose, they’re gonna go out and they’re gonna fight," Harer said.
