Llorente, MacCluen lead Warriors past Drew, as Lyco baseball tops Landmark
Montoursville graduate A.J. Llorente pitched 7 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just three hits, and sophomore Eric MacCluen had three hits and scored two runs to lead the Lycoming College baseball team to a 5-0, shutout win over Drew University, completing the three-game series sweep on Sunday at Brandon Park.
Llorente (2-1) allowed just three hits and a walk, striking out four during his time on the mound, throwing 98 pitches before yielding to first-year Eddie Weindel, who got the last out of the eighth inning. Sophomore Grayson Rinker – a Montoursville grad – finished the game, allowing a walk in a scoreless ninth, striking out one.
The Warriors improved to 14-9 overall and 6-2 in the Landmark Conference, a half-game ahead of Wilkes University, which is 13-7 and 7-3, at the top of the conference standings after a third of the conference season has been completed.
First-year Kaden Shay – a South Williamsport graduate – went 2-for-3 with a RBI and senior Danny DeLucas extended his hitting streak to a school-record 19 games with a 2-for-5 game with an RBI. Llorente was also 1-for-1 with a run, a RBI and two walks.
Lycoming scored single runs in the second, third, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Llorente scored the first run in the second, singling to lead off. He scored on a two-out single by Shay. In the third, MacCluen walked, stole second, moved to third on a walk and scored on a sac fly from Llorente. In the fifth, junior Brody Lindsey was intentionally walked, moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt and scored on a double down the line from sophomore Sean Perkins.
In the sixth, senior Jake Schilling singled to lead off, moved to second on a sac bunt, third on a groundout and scored on a two-out single from DeLucas. In the seventh, MacCluen and Lindsey singled before Perkins sacrificed them over. After an intentional walk, junior Nick Hoheb drilled a single off the drawn-in third baseman’s glove.
Matt Colucci (2-3) pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing six hits, five walks and two earned runs. He struck out four for the Rangers (10-13 overall, 3-8 Landmark).
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 1, when they host Juniata College in Landmark Conference action at 3:30 p.m. at Brandon Park.
