Local roundup: Lycoming baseball splits doubleheader over SUNY New Paltz

A five-run rally in the seventh inning of the second game of Saturday’s non-conference doubleheader helped lift the Lycoming College baseball team to a 6-4 win over SUNY New Paltz to split the twinbill after falling, 4-3, in the first game.

Down 3-1 through 6 ½ innings, the Warriors’ rally was kickstarted with a one-out double off the wall by junior right fielder Zachary Pleska before freshman catcher Tyler Wetzel, a Hughesville graduate, drew a walk. After a groundout, senior first baseman Danny DeLucas hit a fly ball to left that was just out of the reach of a diving outfielder to tie the game.

After junior third baseman Brody Lindsey and junior designated hitter A.J. Llorente, a Montoursville graduate, walked to load the bases, sophomore shortstop Sean Perkins delivered a line single into center and sophomore first baseman Eric MacCluen also drove in a run with a single.

New Paltz (5-5 overall) got on the board with a homer in the top of the fifth before Pleska responded with a homer in the bottom of the inning. The Hawks took the lead with two runs in the sixth and added another in the eighth, but freshman Eddie Weindel got a strikeout with the bases loaded, sophomore Grayson Rinker, a Montoursville graduate, got out of the inning with a fly out to right. Rinker allowed two hits in the ninth, but struck out two before getting a groundout to end the game.

Pleska led the Warriors (8-6 overall), going 3-for-4 with two runs, a double and a homer. DeLucas was also 2-for-5 with a run, a double and two RBI.

Lock Haven capped a three-game series with Millersville in a doubleheader with two losses: 9-2 and 10-4. The sweep drops the Bald Eagles to 10-9. In the first game, Millersville was able to scratch seven runs across the first two innings against the Bald Eagles.

Leading the offense for The Haven was Zachary McEllroy (2 for 3, triple) and Ethan Nagy (1 for 2, double, RBI, BB). Jaxson Pupo, Nathan Wise and Morgen Billotte also collected hits along the way.

The right-hander Matt Lingenfelter started on the mound for the Bald Eagles, tossing four innings, allowing eight runs on nine hits, while striking out two. The loss brings his record to 2-1 on the young season.

Aiden Starn made his second appearance of the season, pitching two innings and allowing one earned run.

The offensive resurgence from Friday night’s seven-run, ninth-inning uprising carried over, as Bucknell routed Florida International 14-3 on Saturday in a game that was shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule. Ben Magovern pitched five strong innings, Billy Fluharty had a career-high four hits, and Tyler Dunn and Michael Trommer homered to help the Bison win their second straight game and improve to 8-9 on the season.

Bucknell scored two runs in each of the first two innings and then scratched five times in the fourth and sixth. The Bison outhit the Panthers (13-8) 11-4, with five of their hits going for extra bases, and drew eight walks.

After the seven-run ninth led to an 8-6 win on Friday, Bucknell wasted no time in this one. Fluharty hit the game’s first pitch up the middle for a single, and four pitches later Dunn took FIU starter Logan Runde out of the park to the opposite field.

FIU picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first, and then John Calabrese started Bucknell’s two-run rally in the second with a one-out single. With two outs, Fluharty laced a couple into the right-center gap and Billy Kender drove in Fluharty with a sharp single.

Mansfield dropped a doubleheader with California (Pa.), losing the first game 6-5 before falling 4-0 in the second contest.

In game one, Austin Lewis made his fourth start of the year in game one as he took the mound for the Mounties. He pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and two walks while striking out four batters.

In the top of the second, the Mountaineers struck first, thanks to an RBI groundout by Kahale Burns, which scored Cole Serfass after he led off the inning with a single.

In the bottom of the second, Lewis struck out the Vulcans’ five-hitter to record the 200th strikeout of his career, becoming the ninth player in program history to achieve this milestone.

Mansfield doubled their lead in the fourth with an RBI single by Ryan Sekulski, bringing in Ryan Scott.

California (Pa.) responded in the bottom half of the second with an unearned run, cutting the Mountie lead to 2-1.

• Mansfield softball split a doubleheader to Bowie State University on the road, losing 2-0 in the first game before stealing an extra-inning game two win, 3-2.

Three innings flew by in last non-conference series in the firs game, with both aces combining early no-hitter chances, with only Olivia Ackerson and Madison Bailey reaching base via walk, while the Bulldogs landed four via walk or error.

Putnam used her two-game winning streak boost to sink four strikeouts through the first innings and the scoreboard useless, heading into the fourth inning.

In the second game, a lead-off walk from Melissa Demo gave the red and black an early opportunity to score. Sarah Shupp delivered with an error by the catcher to move Demo and an error by the Bulldogs to score the first run.

The next quiet three innings were dominated by freshmen Reilly Storer, who held the Bulldogs to two hits and no runs up through the fourth inning, but the host also kept the Mounties cold at the plate despite the 1-0 advantage.

• On a day when Bucknell and Colgate combined to put 35 goals on the board, it was goalie Luke Renaud who came up with two critical saves in the final minute to help the Bison knock off the 15th-ranked Raiders, 18-17.

Michael Meyer recorded five goals and three assists, Connor Davis tallied three goals and a career-high four assists, and Luke Brunner recorded a natural hat trick in the third quarter to help the Bison erase a four-goal deficit. Meyer tied the game at 17-17 with his career-high-tying fifth goal of the day, and then Davis fired home the go-ahead goal one minute later.

Davis is now one goal away from tying Justin Zackey’s Bucknell career record. Davis had never recorded three assists in a game during his brilliant career, but he bagged a hat trick of helpers in the first quarter alone – all coming on the man-up unit – and his fourth of the day set up Meyer to tie the game at 16-all midway through a frantic fourth quarter.

• The Lock Haven lacrosse scored three times and didn’t allow a goal in the third quarter to take down Frostburg State 9-7 in an exciting non-conference game on Saturday afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field.

With the victory, Lock Haven improves to 3-3 on the season and Frostburg State falls to 3-5. Two of Lock Haven’s three losses this season have came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents. The two schools were deadlocked across the board in the first half and went into the break tied 4-4.

However, Lock Haven took full control in the third period behind a shutout and three goal to build a 7-4 advantage.

Frostburg State outscored The Haven, 3-2, in the fourth quarter, but time was no longer on the Bobcats side and the Bald Eagles clinched the victory.
