No one at regionals sent more to states than Montoursville

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville’s Landon Morehart wrestles in the 285-pound final at the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament on Saturday. Morehart is one of seven Montoursville wrestlers who advanced to the state tournament.

No school at the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament had more wrestlers secure a berth in the state tournament this year than Montoursville did.

Not Warrior Run, not Montgomery, not Hughesville.

While those wrestling schools all have guys going to this weekend’s PIAA Class AA tournament in Hershey, Montoursville is sending an impressive seven. And it just speaks to the talented group of wrestlers coach Matt Yonkin has on his roster. The Warriors went 24-3 this year in dual meet competition, won the program’s first-ever District 4 Class AA Duals tournament and won the team title at sectionals, districts and regionals in three consecutive weeks.

That’s a testament to the standouts on the mat.

“That’s just phenomenal. Having these numbers consistently every year, it’s almost privilege because you see all these good wrestlers and it’s just amazing in how much talent surrounds you,” Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas said about having seven wrestlers going to Hershey.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville’s Branden Eisenhour competes in the 107-pound final at the Northeast Class AA Regional on Saturday.

Montoursville’s Branden Eisenhour (107 pounds), Bobotas (121), David Kennedy (127), Blaize Vogel (133), Hayden Harvey (160), Gage Wentzel (172) and Landon Morehart (285) are all heading to the PIAA Class AA championships which begin on Thursday morning.

“We’re so connected. We don’t even see each other as teammates, we see each other as family,” Kennedy said. “We do everything together. We go out to eat, we win together, we lose together. This season’s been all winning. It’s been a great time.”

Eisenhour, Bobotas, Vogel, Wentzel and Morehart all took home silver medals from the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament while Kennedy and Harvey were both third-place finishers.

Eisenhour (36-13) will wrestle North East’s Kael Kimmy (36-13) , a Northwest Class AAA third-place finisher in the first round at 107. Eisenhour is ranked No. 16 in the state.

At 121, Bobotas (42-6) will wrestle in the first round against Southwest Class AA Regional third-place finisher Jack Silfies (24-20) of Bishop McCort. Bobotas is ranked No. 8 in the state.

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas wrestles in the 121-pound final at the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament on Saturday. Bobotas is one of seven Montoursville wrestlers who advanced to the state tournament.

Kennedy (37-7), ranked No. 3 in the state at 127, will face Hickory’s Brady Slicker (38-9).

At 133, Montoursville’s Vogel (32-11) earned a first-round matchup against Derry’s Anthony Mucci (42-6). Vogel is ranked No. 19 at his weight.

Harvey — who lost in the championship semifinals at the regionals — is ranked No. 10 and is 32-11. He’ll wrestle against Central Clarion senior Mason Gourley (39-4).

Wentzel has been outstanding this winter. He’s ranked No. 4, the second-highest ranked Warrior this year at any weight, and lost in a tough match in the regional final to Warrior Run standout Max Wirnsberger, ranked No. 5 at 172. Wentzel (46-6)will face Southeast Class AA Regional third-place finalist Carmine Lenzi of Berks Catholic. Lenzi is 43-7 this year, reaching his 150th win at regionals, and is committed to wrestle at Davidson. He also is a returning sixth-place state finisher from last year.

Finally at 285, Morehart (No. 11) will wrestle Westmont Hilltop’s Jonah McCoy. Morehart is 38-9 this year and is just two wins from reaching 100 for his career. The senior is also looking for his first ever state medal as he didn’t place last year. McCoy is 33-8 this year and also is eyeing his first career state medal.

Montoursville’s seven state qualifiers are all eyeing the podium this year, and all seem to be wrestling their best at the perfect time of the year. When asked if he thought he was peaking at the perfect time, Bobotas didn’t hesitate to answer.

“Oh yeah, certainly,” Bobotas said. “I’m wrestling good, I feel my gas tank is where it’s at and I’m just excited to cap off the season down in Hershey.”

Bobotas and Vogel both noted that they’re eyeing the podium at states. It’s a sentiment the other five Warriors going to states likely share, and no doubt they’re going to do their best to represent Montoursville well against some of the state’s top wrestlers.
