Numerous swimmers at the state meet in Bucknell is becoming commonplace for those who wear a Williamsport swimsuit. Last year, the Millionaires saw more than a dozen swimmers — including alternates — head down Route 15 to Lewisburg to compete at Bucknell for the PIAA Class AAA swimming and diving championships.
This year? There’s eight competing individually and the Millionaires have four relay teams — two girls, two boys — heading down as well. If it’s mid-March, expect the Millionaires to have a large group of swimmers going to states. It’s becoming the norm under coach Brett Johnson.
“This has been a great season in general. To have the opportunity to take four boys in six individuals and two relays and two girls in two individuals and having two relays is awesome. I know that in my time coaching this is the most we have taken to states,” Johnson said. “It is very exciting for the program to have both the boys and girls representing Williamsport with two relays competing at states.”
Williamsport’s girls 200 medley and 200 free relay teams are both competing at states as are the boys counterparts.
Williamsport’s boys 200 medley relay team is in the fourth of four heats with a time of 1:35.45 and the boys 200 free relay team is in the first of four heats after a time fo 1:28.55 at districts. Williamspoot’s girls 200 medley relay team swam a 1:57.52 at districts to earn a spot in the first of four heats and the 200 free relay team’s time of 1:43.71 was good enough for a first-heat swim in the prelims as well.

“They have all worked extremely hard this year and for the girls it’s been multiple trials to find the best group and order for each relay. I think we have found it and I think they will hit new PR’s in both,” Johnson said. “The boys relays have been set since the beginning of the season. They have worked and swam against some of the best relays in the state. They have put themselves in an excellent position to make finals this weekend. It is going to be an exciting Friday for both the boys and girls.”
Williamsport’s girls 200 medley relay team consists of Cohick, Becker, Kiley Persun and Aviya Halstead while the 200 free relay is made up of Cohick, Naomi Lee, Halstead and Persun. The 200 medley relay team won district gold with a time of 1:57.52 while the 200 free relay won in 1:43.71.
Williamsport’s boys 200 medley relay team consists of the group of Allmaras, Summers, Griswold and Ross and that same foursome makes up the 200 free relay team. The 200 medley relay team won district gold in 1:35.45 while the 200 free relay team won in 1:28.55.
Williamsport’s Kendall Cohick (100 back) and Kyla Becker (100 breast) are competing on the girls side and Williamsport has a pair of divers in Allie Eberhart and Clover Lindsay competing.
“My expectations have never changed. I expect the girls to give 110%. I know both of these girls will do that,” Johnson said. “I have talked to each of them and told them I would love to see each of them break team records. They both have been swimming well and they are both driven.”

On the boys side, Williamsport has Evan Summers and Keller Griswold both swimming in two events. Summers will swim the 200 IM and 100 breast while Griswold will compete in the 100 fly and 100 free. Brady Ross will compete in the 500 free and Cooper Allmaras is competing in the 100 back.
“It is amazing to see these boys get to this point. It was a tough season at times simply because of pure numbers. We just didn’t have enough boys to always get the Ws, but we managed to take a lot of first places,” Johnson said. “Now going into states with six individual events between these boys is very exciting. I really feel that they can hit some of there best times and get into a couple B finals or possibly a couple A finals. I think these boys have a great chance to do great. I am very excited for them all.”
All of Williamsport’s swimmers have been peaking at the right time as districts approached and all will look to keep that up with possibly more records and some PRs. The Millionaires saw three records fall at the District 2-4 Class AAA championships in Wilkes-Barre with a relay mark and individual records by Summers and Griswold.
Both events that Summers is competing in are events he broke the school record — and district record — in Wilkes-Barre in. Summers has the school record in the 100 breast in 56.71 and the 200 IM in 1:57.16. Griswold’s mark in the 100 fly of 51.68 was a school record for the Millionaires at districts.
Breaking a school record at districts is even more proof that Williamsport’s swimmers are swimming their best times and races when it matters the most.
The boys 200 medley relay team broke the school record as well with their time.
Cohick is in the first heat of four in the 100 back after her time of 59.83 at districts. Cohick will be swimming against some outstanding competition in the race. The top time is Mount Lebanon’s Sylvia Roy witha. 52.53. If Cohick is able to drop time and swim a great prelim, she could advance to the finals.
In the girls 100 breast, Williamsport’s Becker is in the first of four prelim heats after she swam a 1:12.48 at districts. The best time in the event is Pine Richland’s Sarah Shaffer (1:02.11).
Griswold is seeded in the first heat of the 100 fly in 51.68 and is just three seconds behind Wilson’s Kai Boyer’s top-time of 48.77. Griswold is also in the first of four heats in the 100 free (48.30). Jonathan Hoole of Penncrest swam an impressive time of 44.45 to have the top time in the Class AAA field.
Summers is in the first of four heats in the boys 200 IM in 1:57.16. The top time in the field is Central Bucks West senior’s Blaise Hofmann’s time of 1:50.51.
Summers is in the fourth heat of the 100 breast prelims after he swam a 56.71 at districts. Summers isn’t far off from the top time in the 32-swimmer field. Summers is just a little over a second behind LaSalle College’s Kyle Spaman’s time of 55.50, meaning Summers has a very solid chance of reaching the finals in the race if he’s able to shave some time and swim well from start to finish.
Ross is in the first of four heats in the 500 free with his time of 4;52.23. The top time in the field is a 4:25.06 by Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior McClellan Clark.
Allmaras qualified for states in the 100 back with a time of 55.76 and is in the first of four heats. The top time in the field in Class AAA is by Mars Area’s Luke Lamb, a senior who swam a 47.86 in districts.
