Local roundup: Hughesville defeats Loyalsock in a baseball slugfest 14-13 in eight innings

Loyalsock and Hughesville got into a slugfest as the two teams combined for 23 hits and 27 runs as Hughesville edged their rivals in a high-scoring game, 14-13, in eight innings.

Blake Babb came up clutch for the Spartans with the walk-off hit in the eighth inning to score the game-winning run.

The two teams combined to throw 10 pitchers as well.

Hughesville was led by Dylan McConnell’s 3 for 4 performance with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Chase Fowler was 2 for 5 with a triple, three RBIs and scored a run. Hughesville also saw Connor Anstadt go 2 for 4 and B. Fisher was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Dolan Harmon had two doubles as he went 3 for 5 for Loyalsock and Chase Wright had a double and triple, finishing his day 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Loyalsock’s Deryk Kulp was 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored and Jahvon Larosa was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Marek Mascho went 2 for 3 with a home run, driving in three runs and scoring three himself as Wellsboro pummeled Coudersport in just three innings, 18-3. The Green Hornets led 6-1 after the first inning before adding 11 runs in the second.

Alec Magli went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs and Dustin Owlett had a double.

• Penn College split a United East baseball doubleheader against Notre Dame. The Wildcats dropped the first game 10-9, before taking the nightcap, 13-0. PCT improved to 11-5 UE, 18-16 overall.

In game one, Penn College jumped out to 5-1 lead through the first four innings. Doubles from Ethan Stahl and Dallas Griess, and a single by Levi Purnell, gave the Wildcats a 3-0 lead in the third before a wild pitch and a Griess RBI fielder’s choice in the fourth made it 5-1. John Croasdale’s one-run single in the sixth, and Matt Munoz’ RBI grounder in the seventh put PCT ahead, 7-2.

Notre Dame plated four in the seventh to get within one, 7-6, before RBIs from Griess and Shawn Townsend in the eighth made it 9-5. The Gators exploded with five runs in the eighth to grab its first, and final lead, 10-9.

Croasdale paced the offense with three hits, while Stahl and Jaydon Goebel added a pair, and Griess finished with a game-high three RBI.

In game two, after four scoreless innings, Penn College plated 13 runners in the final five frames. Griess’ sacrifice, and doubles from Nathan Gustkey and Townsend, made it 3-0 in the fifth, Croasdale’s fielder’s choice and a basses-loaded walk by Gustkey and Purnell in the sixth put PCT ahead 6-0.

Another Griess sacrifice in the eighth made it 7-0, before an error, RBIs from Shane, Stahl, and Gustkey, and a two-run double by Purnell tacked on six more in the ninth.

Junior A.J. Llorente, a Montoursville graduate, posted five hits and had a run and RBI to pace the Lycoming College baseball team, which notched 21 hits as it fell to the Catholic University of America, 10-4 and 10-4, in Landmark Conference action at Brandon Park.

Sophomore Eric MacCluen was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI and junior Brody Lindsey was 3 for 4 with a run and RBI and Llorente was 2-for-5 with a RBI in the first game.

Lycoming (20-18 overall, 11-11 Landmark) scored in the fourth when MacCluen doubled and Lindsey followed with a single. In the sixth, the Warriors closed within a run of the Cardinals (19-16 overall, 10-10 Landmark), with MacCluen and Lindsey singling before Hoheb singled in a run and senior Evan Mok drove in a run with a sac fly.

Catholic broke the game open with three-run innings in the seventh and eighth innings.

Junior Landon Evans (1-2) threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing four hits, three walks and two runs. He struck out one. Roman Tozzi pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and three runs. Jake Kenney earned the save with three innings of work, allowing two hits, two walks and one run.

• In the cage for the Warriors, senior Ben Franco saved 20 shots, leading the Lycoming College men's lacrosse team as it faced a 14-4 setback on Senior Day against Goucher College in Landmark Conference action.

Franco's 20 saves bring him to 978 career saves, which ranks 10th in Division III history. Franco leads the Landmark Conference with an average of 18.79 saves per game and sits fourth in Division III in the category. His 283 saves this year are also a school record.

Senior Ryan Farrell scored two goals for the Warriors in the fifth and 11th minutes of the first quarter, kickstarting Lycoming's offensive efforts. With 1:34 on the clock, senior Brian Hulsey followed up with a goal that tied the game at three.

In the second period, senior Sean Farrell passed the ball to senior Shayne Wilson, who added another point to the board. At halftime, Goucher held a three-point advantage, 7-4.

• Senior Katie Maguire led the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with eight goals as the team claimed an 18-11 victory over Goucher College in Landmark Conference action.

Alongside Maguire, senior Alexa Baldwin secured four goals and an assist. With three points each, junior Riley Block also added three goals, and senior Kailey Stocker contributed two goals and an assist.

To begin Lycoming's scoring, Maguire bounced out in the first 30 seconds of the first quarter. Following a three-goal streak by Goucher, Baldwin darted down the field to add two goals with 6:23 and 2:32 left on the clock, respectively.

In the second period, Block and Stocker teamed for a goal in the seventh minute. With 3:34 remaining, Block returned for another point, bringing the score to 7-5. Maguire followed up with her second goal with 25 seconds left on the clock, as Goucher entered halftime with a three-goal lead, 9-6.

Lock Haven fell to Slippery Rock, 18-11, in the program's final game of the 2025 regular season. The Bald Eagles have clinched the No. 3 seed in the PSAC Western Division and are set to begin postseason play on Tuesday.

Lock Haven finished the regular season with a 9-7 overall mark and a 6-4 record in the PSAC West. The Bald Eagles are the No. 3 seed in the Western Division in the 2025 PSAC Championship Tournament and will travel to No. 2 Seton Hill for the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Slippery Rock finished the regular season 15-1 overall and a perfect 10-0 in conference play to secure the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West. Lock Haven went goal-for-goal with the top-seeded Rock in the first quarter and trailed by only one (5-4) after 15 minutes of play.

• The Lock Haven women's track and field team continues week six of its outdoor season by competing in the Penn Relays event hosted by the University of Pennsylvania.

The 1,600 relay team of Natalie Gentzel, Nicole Carroll, Williamsport graduate Elizabeth Shultz and Jersey Shore graduate Aubrey Sechrist raced into Saturday's finals for the first time in Lock Haven history with a prelim time of 3:58.17, finishing ninth overall.

The group went on to finish sixth with a time of 4:04.65 in the finals

On the women’s side of things, the 400 relay team of Jersey Shore graduate Nick Bellomo, Michael Lawrence, Brennan Miller and Ryan Miller taking bronze at the Penn Relays for the first time in Lock Haven history.

The 1,60 relay team of Matthew Muthler, Montoursville graduate Josiah Schans, Nick Bellomo and Ryan Miller, which made finals on Friday, finished sixth at 3:14.99.

Jersey Shore graduate Peter Bellomo threw the javelin and threw for a PSAC distance of 187-06, finishing twelfth.

• Penn College’s men’s golf team bested a 9-team field over two days at the Chambersburg Country Club course to capture its third consecutive United East Conference championship.

How it happened: After Friday’s opening round of 324 on the par-73, 6,801-yard course put Penn College in command with a 12-stroke lead, the Wildcats sealed it with Saturday’s second-round 326 and 650 total, 21 strokes better than second-place Penn State Berks. In doing so, they became the first team to three-peat as the conference champ since 2017.

Seniors Peyton Mussina, the defending UE individual champion, and Will Orwig, the first-day leader this year, both finished with 158 scores -- Orwig shot 73-85, and Mussina, a Montoursville graduate, shot 80 and 78 -- to place third in a 44-player field. Also for Penn College, Gunner Redmond shot 87-80--167 and tied for seventh, Brady Handy shot 89-83--172 and tied for 17th, and Logan Gawlinski shot 84-91--175 and tied for 21st.

Sophomore Will Eberz notched a 6-over-par 78 to lead the Lycoming College golf team on day one of the Landmark Conference Championships at the par-72, 6,714-yard Shawnee Golf Resort. The Warriors shot a season-best 342 to finish 10th on the first day at the championships, while Drew leads the field with a 1-over-par 289. Drew's Liam Larkin leads the field with a 3-under-par 69.

Eberz notched five birdies and four pars during his round, going under-par on the par-5, 492-yard No. 6, the par-4, 429-yard No. 10, the par-5, 569-yard No. 11, the par-5, 567-yard No. 13, and the par-5, 521-yard, No. 15.

Sophomore Connor Shanahan notched an 11-over-par 83 to finish the day 37th in the field of 50 golfers, sophomore Mikey Fry, a Muncy graduate, added an 89 and sophomore Ross Eyer, a Muncy graduate, notched a 92 to round out the scoring four. Sophomore Christian Eppley also posted a 94.
