On Wednesday, a vast array of area athletes competed in this year’s rendition of the District 4 Class AA singles tournament, taking place at Williamsport Area High School. Of those athletes, four Sun-Gazette area athletes made it to Thursday’s semifinals in Loyalsock’s Colby Peters and Evan Anderson, Jersey Shore’s Ryder Fink and Montoursville’s Teli Bobotas.

Fink – the tournament’s top seed – ran into little issue in keeping his run alive another day, receiving a first round bye and dropping just two games through the second round and quarterfinals combined.

In the second round, he defeated Wellsboro’s Lucas Cuneo by a score of 6-1, 6-0. Then, in quarters, he cruised past Lewisburg’s No. 2 Alexey Rosenberg by the same score, a player coming off a dominant win over No. 8 seed Josh Myers (Hughesville).

The second highest remaining seed, No. 4 seeded Colby Peters, had a difficult quarterfinal challenge to overcome. After cruising past Muncy’s Michael Howard, 6-1, 6-1, he’d carry that momentum into his matchup against No. 5 seed David Sommer (Danville), winning the first set 6-1. Sommer would battle back, forcing a tiebreaker in the second. But with the prospect of enduring another set on his shoulders, Peters prevailed, winning the tiebreaker set 10-4 to extend his run another day.

On the other side of the bracket, No. 6 seeded Anderson and unseeded Bobotas would each pull off upsets to keep their runs alive.

Anderson – who advanced to quarters with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hughesville’s Jacob Buck – would overcome No. 3 seeded David Toscano (Central Columbia) in dominant fashion, defeating the Bluejay by a score of 6-0, 6-3.

And after advancing past No. 2 seeded Will Cecchini (Lewisburg) due to injury default in the second round, Bobotas prevailed over No. 7 seeded Baylay Poll (Towanda), controlling first set, 6-3, before scraping by in a tiebreaker in the second.

The tournament is set to resume on Thursday, with the semifinals taking place at the Central PA Tennis Center starting at 1 p.m. No. 1 seeded Ryder Fink (Jersey Shore) will face No. 4 seeded Colby Peters (Loyalsock) and No. 6 seeded Evan Anderson (Loyalsock) will face unseeded Teli Bobotas.
