Glenn reaches 200 wins; Breneisen breaks record, Miller reaches 100 hits on busy softball weekend
Montgomery pounded out 20 hits and helped coach Chris Glenn join an elite club Friday afternoon.
Arianna Snyder went 4 for 5 with four RBIs; Chloe Gordner, Madisyn Miller and Cali Barnes all collected three hits and Glenn won his 200th career game as Montgomery defeated Canton, 19-15. Glenn has led Montgomery to the postseason in all seven seasons there, as well as the 2022 Class A state championship, two district crowns and three state tournaments. He also won two district titles at Jersey Shore and led Hughesville to the playoffs in his first coaching tenure.
Montgomery scored 18 runs in the first four innings, winning a slugfest and rallying after Canton taken a 9-8 second inning lead. Gordner and Miller each belted two doubles, combining for seven RBIs. Miller drove in four runs, Gordner three and Barnes was 3 for 5 with three RBIs. Jenna Houseknecht also doubled and she and Mady Dieffenderfer each had two hits. Addi Muhl added three RBIs as Montgomery finished the regular season 14-3. The Red Raiders will be the top seed in the district tournament and play two-time defending champion Bucktail in the semifinals Wednesday at Elm Park.
Ella Breneisen made some history as Hughesville concluded its best regular season ever Saturday, throwing a three-hitter in a 12-4 win against HAC-II champion Central Columbia. Breneisen won her 12th game, the most in a single season by a Hughesville pitcher and also hit a two-run home run as the Spartans (14-5) rallied from a two-run fourth inning deficit and scored the game’s final 10 runs over the last four innings. Ashlynn Barlett, Maddie Smith, Jayla Koser, McKenna Sones and Avery Earnest all produced two hits and Barlett drove in three runs. Sones doubled twice and Barlett and Smith also doubled. Hughesville will be the No. 3 seed in the District 4 Class AAA quarterfinals and host Towanda Tuesday.
Sofia Mileto went 4 for 4 and scored two runs in her final home game, helping Loyalsock defeat Jersey Shore, 9-5. Mileto is the team’s lone senior and was part of an 18-hit offense as every Lancer produced a hit. Six players collected at least two hits as well. Easton Waller and Kinsie Phillips were two of those players and each homered. Shyla Fulp doubled twice and drove in two runs and Alena Barone, Lydia Kresock and Maddie Wertz all had two hits. Dani Miller reached an impressive milestone for Jersey Shore, going 3 for 4 and joining the 100-hit club. Only a junior, Miller needed less than three completed seasons to reach the century mark and closed the game with 101 hits after homering, doubling, driving in two runs and scoring twice. Lynna Clark and Isabelle Engel had two hits each for Jersey Shore (10-7) which faces Athens in Wednesday’s District 4 Class AAAA semifinals at Elm Park. Loyalsock will play at rival Montoursville in the 3A quarterfinals Tuesday.
Emilia Viveiros threw five straight scoreless innings to close the game and went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, helping Sullivan County defeat Muncy, 10-2. The Griffins rallied from a 2-0 deficit and scored the game’s final 10 runs, closing the regular season 12-5. Charley Insinger also had two hits for the Griffins who face Northeast Bradford in Wednesday’s District 4 Class A semifinals at Elm Park. Taylor Shannon homered for Muncy and Savannah Thompson went 3 for 4. Chevelle Bauman and Dakota Showalter each added two hits. The Indians (9-8) head to Northwest Tuesday and play in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals.

The Hornets (11-10) rallied from a 3-7 start to reach the postseason and return a strong core next season. Max Mascho doubled for Wellsboro and Griffin Morral went 1 for 2.
