Golf tip of the week: Build a smooth and balanced swing with a household broom

PHOTO PROVIDED The broom exercise works like any other swing trainer on the market; save your money for golf balls.

Don’t waste your money on expensive training aids when you most likely have the best swing trainer in your closet.

I have been using a bristle broom for teaching for more than 40 years. It will give you balance and enough resistance to feel how a golf club should feel in motion. It will also firm up the muscles needed to increase power in your swing.

Grip a broom as you would your golf club with the flat side of the broom facing the target. Hold the bristle end high enough to clear the floor when swinging; please feel free to choke down if necessary.

Start with ten repetitions a session, then repeat the ten repetitions three times with a minute rest. You will be amazed at how your clubhead speed will increase.

Pay attention to the broom’s resistance in motion; try to duplicate that feel when swinging your clubs and enjoy this great game called golf.
