Local roundup: Hughesville softball blanks Towanda 5-0

Hughesville made history Saturday afternoon, producing an impressive 5-0 win against fellow District 4 Class AAA playoff qualifier Towanda, 5-0, in softball. The Spartans (13-5) broke the program record for wins in a season after tying that mark last year.

Ella Breneisen threw an eight-hit shutout and was backed by an excellent defense which made no errors. She added two hits as did Maddie Smith who went 2 for 2 with three RBIs. Kiana Peck had a hit and two RBIs and seven different Spartans collected hits.

Avery Earnest and Addison Henniger each doubled, helping Hughesville win for the fifth time in six games.

Easton Waller threw a four-hitter and had a monster day at the plate, helping Loyalsock defeat perennial District 2 title contender Holy Redeemer, 6-2. Waller struck out five and went 4 for 4 with a home run, two triples, an RBI and three runs. Shyla Fulp hit an RBI double and Loyalsock received timely hitting throughout the game.

Sofia Mileto, Maddie Wertz, Shyla Fulp and Addi Barowy all had hits and RBIs. Fulp belted a double as Loyalsock (11-6) moved to third in the District 4 Class AAA standings.

Five players collected two hits each, while Lynna Clark, Isabelle Engel and Alexis Frey combined for nine strikeouts as Jersey Shore, blanked Southern Columbia, 10-0 in five innings. Kylie Schall was 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs and Jersey Shore (9-5) scored four first inning runs.

Dani Miller, Isabelle Engel, Alexis Frey and Annika Clark also delivered two hits and Lynna Clark and Jaymison Stellfox both had hits with RBIs.

• Parker Persing went 3 for 3 with five RBIs and Briar Persing and Parker Bennett combined on a three-hitter as Montgomery defeated rival Muncy, 13-1 in five innings. Montgomery (12-4) started strong, scoring six runs in the first two innings. Briar Persing struck out seven in 3 2/3 innings, improving to 5-0 this season.

Mason Bryson hit a double and Trace Furman and Lincoln Miller both had hits and RBIs. Tanner Baker produced two hits for Muncy.

Ayren Morgan and Levi Stahli threw six innings of scoreless relief and Cowanesque Valley pounded out 20 hits as it won the completion of a wild, suspended game against North Penn-Mansfield, 12-11 in 13 innings. The game was stopped after seven innings last month and turned into a pitchers’ duel with CV finally breaking through in the 13th and improving to 13-2. Lucas Hamilton had a big game, going 6 for 7 with a double and three RBIs.

Logan Stickler homered and Morgan had four hits, a double, two RBIs and four runs. Dave Hess and Dan Smith also hit doubles. Easton Cleveland-Pequinot raked for North Penn-Mansfield, slamming two home runs and finishing 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Cooper Shaw, Alex Davis and Noah Musser all had two hits.

A four-run first inning helped lift Hughesville to a 6-1 win over Tunkhannock at home. Wynter Fogleman led Hughesville with a 3 for 3 performance as he had a team-high two RBIs.

Trent Wetzel went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run. Josiah Abernatha went 1 for 3 with a double, RBI and run scored while Connor Anstadt had a single.
