Morrow of WAHS is back at states in two events
CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Isabelle Morrow competes in the high jump at states last year. Morrow is state bound again this year in the high jump and long jump.
Isabelle Morrow is no stranger to the state meet. She reached Shippensburg in the spring of 2024 in the high jump and knows what the competition is like there.
Last year didn’t end exactly how Morrow was hoping it would, however. The then-sophomore did well but just missed on reaching the podium. Morrow cleared 5 feet, 4 inches last year at the state meet and tied for 10th place and missed the podium on criteria with misses.
But competing with the best the state has to offer in the high jump gives Morrow confidence as she’s back at states.
“It definitely gives me confidence knowing what to expect and I feel comfortable jumping there again,” Morrow said.
The Millionaire is back at states in the high jump this year and also the long jump.
Two for two for gold medals and state trips? Not a bad district performance for Morrow.
“It feels really good. I’m really excited to go back (to states),” the Millionaire said.
The Millionaire won the long jump with a distance of 16-11 1/2 and won the high jump by clearing 5-3. Both marks were just shy of her PRs of 17-0 and 5-4, respectively.
“I’m excited (to go to states in two events),” Morrow said. “I’m definitely excited to see how I do.”
At districts in the high jump on Day 1, Morrow cleared 4-11 and 5-1 on her first attempts. She missed her first two attempts at 5-3, but cleared it finally on her third jump. She attempted to go for 5-5, but couldn’t clear it.
In the long jump, Morrow consistently hit solid marks. She jumped 16-2 on her first jump, 16-4 1/4 on her second and then her eventual gold-winning 16-11 1/2 on her third attempt. Her fourth jump saw her hit 16-9 1/2. After fouling on her fifth, she closed with her final jump of 16-9.
As for her expectations, Morrow is hoping to reach a new PR.
“I just want to PR. I just want to improve myself,” Morrow said. “I don’t want to focus on the big stuff, I just wanna improve myself.”
In the high jump, Morrow is seeded 10th with her height of 5-3. The top heights in the field are by Souderton senior Destini Smith (5-9 1/2) and Altoona’s Brionna Hudson (5-9). A PR by Morrow of an inch above her current 5-4 could see her reach the podium at Shippensburg.
In the long jump, Morrow is seeded 26th. The best marks in the Class AAA field elong to Souderton senior Destini Smith (19-7 1/4), State College senior Sanai Abdullah (19-5 1/4), Pottsville junior Alexa Giuffre (18-9 1/2) and Palmerton senior Nataly Walters (18-9).
But those solid athletes in both events will help push Morrow to compete at her best and strive to reach a PR.
