Multiple area teams prosper at PHAC Track and Field Championships

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Hughesville's Tyce Shaner (1) competes in the boys 3200 meter run during the PHAC League Championships at Milton High School on Saturday, May 10, 2025.

MILTON – Even the longest races in track can end in a nailbiter conclusion. Just ask Hughesville junior Tyce Shaner.

To kick off the 2025 PHAC Track and Field Championships on a sunny day at Milton, Shaner was the frontrunner in the 3,200-meter run from practically start to finish. But as the runner reached the closing stretch of the race, Shikellamy senior Sam Hennett kicked it into high gear and gave him a run for his money.

However, just as it seemed like Hennett was going to steal the race, Shaner was crossing the finish line a heads length ahead of him. That first-place finish was one of many examples displaying the Spartan distance room’s growth throughout the season, as it did the heavy lifting in the team’s fifth place showing.

Senior Shea McCusker put together a strong overall showing in his last run at the event, claiming silver in the 1,600 (4:21.41) and bronze in the 800 (1:56.63). Shaner led off the team’s silver in the 3,200 relay and sophomore Wyatt Laubacher notched placements of fifth and sixth in the 3,200 and 1,600 respectively.

“It’s just amazing to see the growth that everyone has been putting forth, and it’s amazing that we do it for each other,” said McCusker when discussing the team’s success in distance on the day. “We all get after it together, and it shows on race day.”

“The whole time I was trying to go for the sub-4:20 and just got after it today. Came up shy, but felt great and I’m just right there. So, excited,” he added on his own success.

Adding to the team’s success was most notably Spencer Stine, who took third in the 100 with a 10.98 and fifth in the 200 with a 22.78. Apart from him and the distance room, Brady Morgan and Keagan Smith placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles and pole vault respectively, rounding out a strong day for the Spartans.

In terms of area success at the event, Hughesville was trumped only by Williamsport and Lewisburg.

The Millionaires’ second place showing was a testament to its depth. Despite not seeing an individual title, their 14 combined medals and nine top-three finishes landed them near the top of the event, only trailing Shikellamy at the end of the day.

Sophomore Alex Takach claimed PHAC silver in the 100 (10.87) and 200-meter dash (22.51), with junior Nathaniel Woods landing one spot behind him in the latter. Freshman Tevin Williams continued his great start to his high school career, earning silver in the high jump (6-2) and bronze in the 400 (50.22). And senior Aiden Everett placed in three separate events, taking second in the long jump (21-11 ¾), third in the triple (43-9 ¼) and fifth in the 400 (50:45).

Rounding out their top four showings were Kye Diakite with a bronze placement in the 100-meter hurdles and Cordoza Minor with a fourth place showing in shot put (49-5), with Noah Baird also placing eighth in the 3,200 (10:26.19).

For Lewisburg, multiple Green Dragons were crowned PHAC champions, with Jonathan Hess claiming gold in the 1,600 (4:18.39), Haneef Shavers doing so in the 100-meter hurdles (14.51) and Jacob Gose taking first in shot put with a throw of 55-6. That 14.51 was a program record for Shavers, who added a bronze medal in the 300-meter hurdles soon after.

Apart from the top five, Montoursville also had a solid day on the track. Its 1,600-relay team, consisting of Adam Shearer, Sean Frey, Quinn Winslow and Bryce Winslow, claimed gold to close out the day with a 3:22.85. Bryce Winslow added a silver in the 400 (49.98), Frey took fifth in the 800 (1:59.55) and Weston Fry kicked off the team’s day by taking fourth in the 3,200 (9:54.17).

Loyalsock saw two placements, with Jeremiah Johnson claiming silver in shot put with a 52-4 and Anthony Lewis taking seventh in the 200 with a 23.23. Kade Ficks and Joel Langdon notched titles in the 300-meter hurdles and high jump respectively for Milton, with Langdon adding a silver in the 100-meter hurdles. And Warrior Run saw two individuals place in Aiden Hoffman and Gavin Hunter, who claimed bronze and fourth in the 3,200 and 300-meter hurdles respectively.

Plenty of these teams will be featured in next week’s District 4 Championships, so the meet serves as a decent precursor for what to expect there. That meet is set to begin on Thursday.
