Penn College's run in the United East playoffs came to a close on Friday afternoon as the Wildcats dropped a doubleheader in the United East best-of-three second round to No. 5 Cairn University.
Cairn won the first game, 12-5, and earned a 19-14 second-game victory.
Penn College jumpd out to a 2-0 lead after the first three innings but Cairn scored twice in the top of the fourth to tie it up. The Wildcats would score a run in the fifth inning to lead 3-2 and extended the lead to 4-2 ater six innings and held a 5-2 lead through seven.
But, that's when Cairn's oense erupted. The Highlanders would score six runs in the eighth and four in the ninth to take a lead it wouldn't let up in the 12-5 victory.
Nathan Gustkey went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a home run. Jaydon Goebel was 2 for 4 with a double and home run.
In game two, Penn College again jumped out to an early lead, only to see it slip away late. The Wildcats would lead 4-0 after the first tw innings and held a 5-3 lead through three. The Highlands scored nine runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings to lead 12-5. Penn College scored four runs in the fifth and sixth to make it a 13-12 Penn College lead.
However Cairn scored seven runs over the final three innings to secure a win.
Williamsport graduate Dallas Griess went 3 for 5 wtih a home run and scored twice for Penn College. Gustkey was 3 for 6, Goebel went 3 for 6 and Brandon Shane had a double and home run. John Croasdale hit a double and Levi Purnell connected for two doubles.
