For the second time in three years, Jersey Shore's major softball team is the district's best team. Jersey Shore used a 10-run third inning to defeat Williamsport Area in Friday's District 12 major softball championship game, 13-1, in four innings.
"It feels good. This is same group of 10-year-olds two years ago that were state runners-up, so they made it to state championship and unfortunately lost," Shore manager Adam Wrench said. "Two years ago a big core of this group was in state championship as 10-year-olds, so they definitely have a high expectations."
Faith Wrench and Sophia Lehman were key in the lineup for Jersey Shore in Friday's victory. The duo combined for two hits apiece while Riley Bowmaster, Lehman and Kelsey Brooks all drove in two runs each. Cali Black and Bowmaster led the team by both earning two walks and those two and Wrench also had multiple stolen bases.
In total, Jersey Shore collected seven stolen bases en route to the win.
Jersey Shore used momentum in that third inning en route to scoring 10 runs and kept each other hyped up in at bats.
"Really it was momentum. I think the way this team works if we can get a run or two, it gets contagious for hit or two and the girls, we definitely work a lot on the base paths," Wrench said. "We work a lot on making sure they're paying attention and stretching the bases as much as they can. It was just a combination of a couple walks, couple hits and once that momentum started, everyone just kind of kept passing the torch to the next girl and it was a nice rally."
"I couldn't pin-point one thing, it was a total team effort for sure," Wrench added.
In the third inning, Addyson Swales had a sacrifice bunt which brought in two runs and Eden Teneyck had a sacrifice bunt which also drove in a run. Riley Crothers had a walk and scored a run while Kelsey Brooks had a single and scored a run. Jersey Shore plated two runs in the third thanks to an error.
Sophia Lehman had a two-RBI single and Riley Bowmaster connected on an RBI single.
Jersey Shore scored in the first inning for an early 1-0 lead and added two runs in the bottom of the second thanks to RBI walks by Bowmaster and Brooks.
In the circle, Wrench didn't allow a hit and only allowed one run in four innings of work with two strikeouts and only one walk.
Of Jersey Shore's nine runs, five were earned.
Williamsport Area broke up the shutout in the fourth inning when it scored after a batter reached base by being hit by a pitch.
Friday's District 12 championship wins secures a spot in the Section 3 tournament for Jersey Shore.
Williamsport Area defeated Jersey Shore in the final 3-2 to force the if game. Jersey Shore bounced back and won big to take the title.
"We definitely learned a lot by losing that one game," Wrench said. "We were the winner's bracket team and it was good for the girls to reflect, learn a lot and persevere and bounce back. It taught them a lot of lessons."
Jersey Shore opens the Section 3 tournament on Tuesday in Troy against the District 24 champion at 5:30 p.m. The sectional tournament runs Tuesday through Friday.
