Montoursville’s Morehart records game-winning sack as North beats South in district 4 all-star game

CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Wellsboro's Ryder Bowen and Montoursville's Landon Morehart celebrate following Morehart's game-winning sack in the District 4 all-star game in Towanda.

TOWANDA — In a game won in the trenches it was fitting that a defensive tackle had the final say in the North’s 20-13 win over the South during the District 4 all-star senior game on Friday. Montoursville’s Landon Morehart ended the South’s final rally with a sack just as time expired to secure the win.

“The last game of the year, the last high school game we’re going to play, I just left it all on the field,” Morehart said. “It felt good to win my last game ever. We came out as underdogs in this game, really not thinking we were going to win. I just fought as hard as I could, everyone else around me fought as hard as they could, and we came up with the dub.”

The North allowed just one touchdown all night, while offensively they leaned on the big play to break the stalemate, getting two big passing touchdowns out of Most Outstanding Player in Jersey Shore’s Elijah Jordan.

“I can’t name a better feeling right now,” Jordan said about being named MOP. “I came in here just expecting to pull out a win with a group of guys, and came out with a little trophy. It’s definitely awesome.”

Jordan only had two completions all game, going 2 for 12, but those were for 94-yards and the two touchdowns.

“Throwing those two touchdown passes, on my God, it was awesome,” Jordan remarked. “It was like a flashback to Fridays, it’s awesome.”

He did most of his damage on the ground, rushing for 77 yards on 16 carries, as part of a strong North ground game that churned out 188 yards on 34 touches.

“It’s always kind of tough coming out a little rusty,” said Jordan. “I’ve got to get the wheels back going, but we bounced back, and pulled it out.”

The Williamsport duo of Kahyear Whaley (10 carries, 53 yards) and Jamel Bailey (five carries, 44 yards) did work, while Towanda’s Riley Vanderpool (two carries, 13 yards) had the go ahead touchdown. Samir Williams had the 74-yard receiving touchdown in the third quarter, while Kyreek Bradshaw hauled in the 20-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Defensively for the North Wellsboro’s Ryder Bowen led both teams with nine tackles, while Bailey had seven tackles, Montgomery’s Coy Bryson made five, while Morehart and Loyalsock’s Hakeem McClain both finished with four.

CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport's Samir Williams was named North Offensive Player of the Game.

For the South Warrior Run’s Samuel Hall had himself a day with 159-yards and a touchdown on nine receptions as part of a South passing attack that finished with 232 yards through the air.

“That was my goal this game, just be able to get one last touchdown,” said Hall. “It just means a lot, and have all these players just celebrate with me, it was just amazing.”

Danville’s Madden Patrick was 12 for 25 for 207 yards and the touchdown to lead the South, which was held to just 88-yards on the ground off 32 carries.

Lewisburg’s Jeremiah Davis led the effort with 54-yards on 13 attempts.

After a scoreless first quarter the North broke through as Jordan found Bradshaw behind the defense for a 20-yard strike with 7:48 left in the first half. Jersey Shore’s Evan Snyder made the point after for a 7-0 lead.

The South struck back 25 seconds later as Patrick hit Hall for a 24-yard scoring strike in the back corner of the end zone. Warrior Run’s Gavin Hunter hit the point after to tie things up.

Hunter would give the South the lead at the half by hitting a 32-yard field goal with no time left for a 10-7 score.

Hunter added another field goal, this time from 27-yards out, for a 13-7 game with 6:06 on the clock in the third.

The North struck back as Jordan hit Williams for a 74-yard catch and run. Snyder hit the point after, and it was 5:15 left in the third it was a 13-13 contest.

Hunter hit his third straight field goal with 7:05 left to play in the game, this time from 25-yards out, for a 16-13 South lead.

With 4:21 left Vanderpool made two tacklers miss as he scampered 12-yards to pay dirt with 4:21 left in the game. Snyder made the kick for the 20-16 contest.

The South had two drives to try to take the lead, the first ending in a lost fumble to Morehart, the second ended on Morehart’s sack as time expired.

“I saw the ball came loose, and I jumped on it as quick as I could,” Morehart said. “Then, the last play, I just went as hard as I could, and pushed my guy right into the quarterback, and got the game winning sack.”

Regardless of the outcome, the players were just excited to get back on the field one last time.

“I’m just so grateful that I’m able to play on the field again, one last time in high school,” Hall said. “To be able to meet this team, meet these players from different teams, and just make that chemistry in a week of practice.”
