On a night spoiled by rain, the Williamsport Crosscutters dropped a five-inning affair against the West Virginia Black Bears 6-2 at Bowman Field.

The game on the night would be mired by the weather, with a one hour rain delay halting proceedings and a large cell in the sixth inning ending things entirely.

When action began, Williamsport was mired by errors, with three of its six surrendered runs coming unearned from errors in the field.

After a scoreless first inning, Williamsport would take the lead early in the second

beginning with Rayth Petersen, who led off with a grounder that prompted an error by third baseman Landon Frei. Petersen would quickly move an at-bat later, when a Max Mandler double put two runners in scoring position.

Two batters later, designated hitter Carlos Castillo would bring in a run on a long flyout to center field. The sacrifice fly brought in Petersen for a 1-0 advantage.

However, in what has become a theme for the Cutters this season, fielding errors would give the lead straight to the visitors.

The culprit on the night would be shortstop Rayth Petersen. After a one out Jace

Rinehart walk, a potential Harold Torres double play ball would be eradicated by the shortstop who threw the force out at second into the outfield.

Peyton single up the middle that tied the game. Landon Frei would come to the plate next, with the batter promptly grounding to short only for Peterson to misthrow again allowing Torres to score and give the Black Bears their first lead of the night.

The folly-rally would complete an at-bat later, when an Alex Rodgers sacrifice fly brought in Peyton to make it 3-1 West Virginia.

Perhaps as a form of redemption, Petersen would get the crowd back on his side in the bottom of the fourth when, two pitches into the at-bat, he would crush a curveball 370 feet over the left field wall. Petersen’s second home run of the season would cut the lead to one.

Another error would cause a run to score an inning later for Williamsport, when starting pitcher AJ Campbell threw a Jordan Peyton grounder into the outfield.

Peyton would score in the next at-bat, when Landon Frei cracked an RBI triple off the top of the left field wall.

An Alex Rodgers walk later, and Campbell’s evening would be cut short. The right

hander would go four and a third of an inning pitched, conceding just three earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts thrown.

Campbell’s second and third earned runs would come with him in the dugout, when

Trenton executed two double steals that would score two more runs in the fifth.

By the sixth inning, the rain would return, prompting the early stoppage. Due to the

influx, Williamsport’s grounds crew would struggle to get the tarp on the diamond, prompting the help of additional interns and even Williamsport starter AJ Campbell to get the tarp over the diamond.

By the time the tarp was there, however, the dirt had already been soiled, causing the games early stoppage.

The loss drops Williamsport to 4-6 on the season, potentially placing them in the bottom of the Draft League standings depending on results elsewhere. Williamsport’s weekend will be on the road, with the Cutters taking on the State College Spikes in a two game series in State College.
