Cutters beat Keys, win third consecutive series
The Williamsport Crosscutters took their second-straight game to win their third-straight series as they defeated the Frederick Keys on Sunday afternoon, 14-5, at Nymeo Field in Frederick, Maryland.
Williamsport’s explosive offense was led by Safea Villaruz-Mauai who went 4 for 5 with a double, our RBIs and three runs scored. Four other Cutters also recorded multi-hit games with Jackson Mayo going 4 for 6 with a double, triple, RBI and two runs scored. Max Mandler was 2 for 6 with a double, two RBis and two runs scored.
Michael Zarrillo went 2 for 4 with his first home run o the season, a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored. Christian Reyes went 2 for 4 with a double, walk, RBI and scored three runs.
All nine Williamsport starters would record at least one base hit in the contest.
Reilly Shafer got the nod to start on Sunday and went 4 2/3 innings before being relieved as he allowed five Keys runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Sam Swygert was the first reliever to come out of the bullpen on Sunday and earned the win, improving to 1-1. He threw 3 1/3 innings with just two Keys hitters reaching base, both via walks. Swygert also struck out three Keys in his outing. David White came on to pitch the ninth in a non-save situation and retired the three Keys he faced in order to end the game.
The Crosscutters remain on the road Monday as Williamsport heads to Mahoning Valley for a two-game series with the Scrappers. The Crosscutters are back at Bowman Field on Wednesday against the West Virginia Black Bears for a series.
On Saturday, Williamsport defeated Frederick, 7-3, thanks to a red-hot start by scoring six runs in the first two innings.
Williamsport’s offense in Saturday’s game was powered by ten hits, five of which came in a four-run second inning. Max Mandler (2 for 3), MIchael Zarrillo (2 for 5) and Marquis Jackson (2 for 5) recorded multi-hit nights. Carlos Castillo led the way in the runs column, scoring three times. Vantrel Reed, Mandler, TJ Racherbaumer and Jackson each accounted for a run as well.
Zarrillo recorded three RBIs to bring his season total to 11. Marcus Brodil had the only extra-base hit of the night for Williamsport with a ground-rule double in the ninth.
Kade Grundy got the start in his debut on Saturday and took a no-decision after a three-inning, one-hit outing and also had four strikeouts. Jed Boyle entered in relief for three innings and allowed two runs on three hits with four walks and seven strikeouts to secure his first win of the season.
David White threw a no-hit seventh inning, but did allow a run after a walk, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly.
Holland Townes, making his second appearance in two days, would close things out on the hill for Williamsport over the final two innings. He shut out the Keys and allowed just one hit, walking two and striking out three.
