Golf tip of the week: Improve takeaway and play better

I have been teaching golf and writing tips for more than 60 years. I have found that the most essential part of the golf swing is the takeaway.

Of course, a golfer must have a proper stance and grip. A correct takeaway creates a good swing plane, smooth tempo and adds power to your swing.

I get frustrated when I see golfers standing on the range pounding balls for hours and see very little or no improvement in their game. When all they would have to do is practice the proper takeaway, which is moving the club correctly, the first two feet back.

The club should remain in front of the chest. Don’t flick the club ahead of the hands on the initial takeaway. You might try moving the grip first for the first few inches, allowing the chest to start the backswing. A golfer can do this in their garage or den.

Practice until it becomes a habit. Trust me, this will help you enjoy this great game called golf.
