Explosive offenses colliding with standout defenses.
Superb goalies going up against speedy forwards.
District championship rematches.
That just scratches the surface of matchups this year in the area for girls soccer. Picking just 10 area games to watch was more than a challenge, and the list easily could have been 20. Lets dive in and see what games you should get out to this fall.
Games are listed from earliest to latest in the season.

WILLIAMSPORT AT HUGHESVILLE
(THURSDAY, AUG. 28)
Both Williamsport and Hughesville were playoff bound last year and both had success. The Spartans reached the program’s first District 4 championship game ever and appeared in states for the first time since 2002.
The Millionaires, meanwhile, reached the District 2-4 Class AAAA championship game for the second straight year.
Both teams are hoping for another playoff run and while they can’t meet up in the postseason, you could consider this a playoff-type atmosphere.

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montoursville's Vivian Heivly (24) knocks down the ball in front of Hughesville's Alyson Taggart (17) in the first half.
Williamsport has back two standout scorers who will look to test Hughesville’s back line in Debroah Shultz (12 goals, seven assists) and Jaelynn Helmrich (nine goals, 13 assists).
Hughesville brings back plenty of firepower too, and Kylie Temple (14 goals, six assists) and Elizabeth Wolfe (six goals, 13 assists) will look to test Williamsport’s defense.
One matchup to keep an eye on will be in goal as both the Millionaires and Spartans will have new starting keepers this year after graduating talented senior goalies.
CENTRAL COLUMBIA AT HUGHESVILLE
(THURSDAY, SEPT. 4)
Last year these two met up in an awesome District 4 Class AA championship game which saw an unbelievably talented Blue Jays team score just one goal against the Spartans. Central Columbia was ranked No. 2 in the state, which speaks a lot to the talent on Hughesville’s team to hold a team like that to simply one goal.
The Spartans know once again they’ll be in for a challenge against Central Columbia. While the Blue Jays lost a senior class that went 91-4 and won four straight district titles and two state championships, the team has plenty of experience on the roster.
Coach Cody Hack has done an outstanding job with the Spartans since taking over, and he’ll have his team focused to face Central Columbia. Get to Raymond H. Perritt Stadium early for this game because there’s likely to be a great crowd turnout for this rematch.
MUNCY AT SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
(WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 10
AND TUESDAY, SEPT. 30)
Speaking of district championship rematches, we have another one here on the schedule … twice. These two Mid-Penn rivals met three times last year, the biggest matchup of that coming in late October for the District 4 Class A championship game. It was that night in Bloomsburg where the Mounties secured an exciting 1-0 win over Muncy to win the program’s third consecutive championship.
Both programs lost some talented players, but don’t expect that to affect the competitiveness and tight game this should be.
Muncy’s players are motivated to get some revenge on South after coming up just shy of the program’s first district title.
These two will meet up twice in the regular season, with the second meeting coming at Muncy on Tuesday, Sept. 30. That means fans will get two great showdowns between these two league rivals in a three-week span, with those matchups possibly being district final previews if both teams have outstanding years again.
HUGHESVILLE AT MONTOURSVILLE
(WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 10)
Another showdown of two solid programs in early September. And yet another rematch from last year’s district playoffs.
Montoursville and Hughesville squared off last fall in the District 4 Class AA quarterfinals in which the Spartans secured a 1-0 victory. Montoursville had a solid rally late in the year to overcome a 1-3-2 start and made the postseason, but that loss no doubt stung for the Warriors.
Hughesville’s defense will be focused on slowing down the Bennett sisters of Kenna and Khaya. Those two led Montoursville’s offense last year and will no doubt be looked upon to help spark the offense again this year in the duo’s final season together before Kenna graduates.
Hughesville was battle tested many times last year, including the postseason, and know they can’t let players like Kenna and Khaya Bennett get into easy scoring position against them. That 1-0 playoff game last year may very well be the score again this year.
Who walks away with the win? We’ll have to wait until September 10 to find that out.
ALTOONA AT WILLIAMSPORT
(SATURDAY, SEPT. 20)
This will be a tough test for the Williamsport girls soccer team. Altoona is coming off a 15-6 season in which the Mountain Lions scored 89 goals. Altoona completely dismantled State College in the District 6 Class AAAA playoffs last year, 7-0, and reached the state tournament, falling in the first round.
Altoona will have a different look this year after the graduation of scoring standouts Allison Little and Lia Sankey, a duo which combined for 39 goals (23 from Little, 16 from Sankey) and 14 assists. But, the Mountain Lions have 14-goal, 10-assist senior Sophia O’Dea on the team and 13-goal, 20-assist junior Ava Frye back.
Williamsport has players who can score up top and defensive players back. But the Millionaires will have to play solid all 80 minutes to attempt to beat the Mountain Lions.
SELINSGROVE AT MONTOURSVILLE
(SATURDAY, SEPT. 20)
The Seals vs. Warriors should give fans a fun game to watch.
Selinsgrove is coming off a 15-5 record and went 7-2 last year in the HAC-I. Selinsgrove will be tough again this year and have Madison Merrell returning after she led the Seals with 17 goals and dished out five assists.
Selinsgrove’s defense though will have its hands full when trying to slow down Kenna and Khaya Bennet, two sisters who can open up a game at any given time on the field. Montoursville coach Vic Gorini noted in the preseason for the Golden Goals digital magazine that those two will look to spark the offense again this year, and those two provide a potent 1-2 punch that any team would love to have in their lineup.
HUGHESVILLE AT MUNCY
(SATURDAY, SEPT. 27)
This one fans should have circled on their calendars. Both Hughesville and Muncy made history for their respective schools last year.
Hughesville reached the District 4 championship game for the first time in program history and qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 2002. Muncy doubled its program win total in the playoffs this past year with two victories and reached the District 4 Class A championship game for the first time ever, coming just shy by a goal to South Williamsport. The Indians also qualified for the state tournament for the first time ever.
Both programs are looking to keep up that success, and they come to a clash in late September at Muncy.
Both teams have talented offenses with scorers and Hughesville’s Kylie Temple vs. Muncy’s Ella Nagel is a solid matchup to keep an eye on.
If you love good soccer, make sure to head to Muncy for this one.
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT AT WARRIOR RUN
(WEDNESDAY, OCT. 1)
These two met last season in what was an anticipated matchup, but Warrior Run came away with a decisive 3-0 win in that meeting at South Williamsport. This time, they’ll collide again, but in Warrior Run.
Both teams lost some key pieces to last year’s team. For South Williamsport, they’re without Abby Akers who was a tremendous defensive-minded player who could also score and help the offense excel. For Warrior Run, they’re without standout Raygan Lust who scored 30 goals and had 15 assists last fall and goalie Addy Ohnmeiss, who was a wall in goal all year for the Defenders.
It should make this year’s matchup intriguing to see how the two teams will match up. Both teams won at least 14 games last year, and there’s no reason to think both teams won’t be playoff contenders yet again.
MONTOURSVILLE AT SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT
(THURSDAY, OCT. 9)
Speaking of South Williamsport, circle October 9 on your calendar. Montoursville heads to South Williamsport for a showdown against the defending three-time District 4 Class A champions. Last fall, Montoursville and South Williamsport played a thriller to open the season at the annual Burke Tournament in which the two teams tied after two overtime periods and, while the game officially was recorded a tie that night, played a shoot out for fun afterwards.
The fact this game comes on Oct. 9 is great for both teams. This will act as a great tune-up for both teams right before the District 4 tournament begins.
South Williamsport’s defense will have their hands full with the Bennett sisters (Kenna and Khaya), two standouts for the Warriors who are fast and hard to contain. For Montoursville, the Warriors know defensively they have to limit Ella Moore from getting open looks.
Montoursville coach Vic Gorini and South coach Marc Lovecchio are both great coaches, and expect this to be a chess match between the two.
MONTGOMERY AT MUNCY
(SATURDAY, OCT. 11)
Montgomery had a great season last year in which the team reached the postseason via wins for the first time since the 2000s, and Muncy had an unbelievable year in which the Indians reached the District 4 championship game. This matchup at Muncy should be an exciting one for fans.
Montgomery will be under the direction of first-year coach Taylor Snyder, but Hannah Lounsbury is still around as an assistant coach after helping turn the program onto the right course and direction. Montgomery has key pieces back from last year’s playoff team and the Red Raiders will want to show they can compete against tough teams like Muncy.
The Indians also have plenty of returners back on defense and offense from last year, so expect this game to be a good one between rivals and Mid-Penn foes.
