Local roundup: Hughesville girls soccer starts season with strong win over Seals
On Tuesday evening, the Hughesville girls soccer team kicked off the 2025 season with a 3-1 win over a strong Selinsgrove program on road. Three different Spartans made up the team’s trifecta of goals, with senior Kylie Temple getting the tally going off an assist from Elizabeth Wolfe, Carly Converse scoring just before the break and Sierra DeWire making it three early in the second. In goal, Jasmine Caputo was practically lights out, notching seven saves on eight shots on goal for the Seals.
Maura Woland scored consecutive goals after Williamsport struck first and Nat Hall’s tie-breaking goal fueled a big second half as Warrior Run defeated the Millionaires, 5-2. Brooke Ryder and Scarlett Dunkleberger added second half goals as the Defenders pulled away. Jaelynn Helmrich and Loisa Hofstrom both scored goals for Williamsport. Helmrich also had an assist, as did Deborah Shultz.
Behind a two-goal outing from senior Rees Bierly, the Jersey Shore girls soccer kicked off the 2025 season with a strong opening win, defeating Montgomery, 3-1, to start the campaign 1-0. It’s the first time the Bulldogs have pulled off an opening win since 2021.
Alongside Bierly, Jessa Milbrand also got on the board on a direct kick, adding an assist on Milbrand first goal. Ellie Herr assisted on Bierly’s second. For Montgomery, senior Zoe Furman was the one to get the Red Raiders on the board.
Kate Bryant scored and assisted Haylie Smith on another goal as Wellsboro blanked Athens, 2-0. The defense played an outstanding game and goalie Jadyn Dunlap made 11 saves.
While it didn’t result in the win, the North Penn-Mansfield girls showed improvement following their opening 5-0 loss, coming one goal short of extending it in a 2-1 loss to Wyalusing. Freshman Leila Garvenick scored her first career varsity goal off an assist from senior captain Brooke Wilcox, a goal which cut their two-goal deficit to a manageable one late. In goal, Avalon Rew notched 11 saves on Wyalusing’s 14 shots on goal, with defender Adalyne Yungwirth blocking another.
Despite dominating in terms of offensive pressure and defensive suffocation, the Milton boys soccer team couldn’t gain an edge on Bloomsburg. The Panthers on the other hand made the most of their opportunities, with Joshua Kopp knocking in what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 36th minute to grant Bloomsburg the 1-0 win. That was one of Bloomsburg’s two shots on the night. And defensively, though the Panthers bent, they didn’t break, with goalkeeper Marc-Alexi Dobbins accounting for nine saves.
On Monday evening, the Loyalsock girls tennis team faced off against South Williamsport in what proved to be a tight battle. The Mounties managed to post a win in both singles and doubles, but the Lancers ultimately edged out the match by a score of 3-2, with two wins in singles being the highlight.
For Loyalsock, Gia Biachi battled her way back from a first-set defeat, sweeping the second before winning a tiebreaker in the third by a score of 7-3. And on Singles Court 3, Vivian Reem posted a similar win, shaking off a 6-2 first-set loss with a second-set sweep before winning the third set, 6-3.
For South Williamsport, No. 1 singles player Emma McLaughlin made that trend a two-way street, fighting back after enduring a first set sweep and winning her next two sets 7-5. In doubles, No. 1 South duo Ava Foote and Peyton Coolidge posted a dominant, two-set win while Loyalsock’s No. 2 duo of Kinsley Hill and Annalise Berger did the same, only dropping three combined games.
Hughesville stayed undefeated, dropping just one game in five matches, while sweeping Bloomsburg, 5-0. Georgia Randall, Rebecca Roberts and Talia Saka all had perfect singles matches, winning each set, 6-0. Gracie Budman and Caroline Hicks did the same in doubles and the team of Carly Sones and Shelby Myers came close, winning, 6-0, 6-1.
Throughout the season, Central Mountain has split two PHAC matches with Jersey Shore and Shikellamy, defeating the Bulldogs, 5-0, last Thursday and losing to the Braves, 3-2, on Tuesday.
Lucy Walker and Lane Walker won both their singles matches and Addison Lindsay won a singles match against Jersey Shore in straight sets. Lucy Walker was locked with Jersey Shore’s Julia Herman in the match of the day, rallying from a set down to take the last two, 6-4 and 10-4. Tess Akeley and Leah Wian won a three-set match in doubles against Jersey Shore’s team of Mya Lehman and Rylee Allison.
In high school girls field hockey, Muncy endured a tough loss at the hands of Northwest, falling by a score of 6-1. The team’s lone game came in the fourth quarter, when Selah Persing assisted Rosie Zalonis to get the Indians on the board.
