Sun-Gazette power rankings entering Week 2

MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Bo Sechrist of Jersey Shore runs against Dallas last week at home. The Bulldogs are 1-0 and are ranked No. 1 in the Sun-Gazette power rankings.

1. Jersey Shore (1-0): Bo Sechrist is a two-time all-state linebacker but also a darn good running back. Despite not being a starter in the backfield until last season, he is five yards from reaching 1,000 for his career and also has rushed for 21 touchdowns.

2. Montoursville (1-0): After one week, Montoursville leads the area in points, points allowed, yards and yards allowed per game. Sure, it’s a long season and the Warriors have big goals but that’s certainly a good way to build momentum.

3. Williamsport (1-0): Williamsport continues churning out impressive kickers. A year after Parker Johnson tried football for the first time and became a Big 33 selection, Brayden Ungard is picking up where he left off. The ex-soccer player was perfect on a 30-yard field goal and four extra-point attempts last week.

4. Warrior Run (1-0): While happy his team won, coach Derrick Zechman was less than thrilled about its second-half performance at Muncy. Cleaning up the little mistakes that plagued them there and conditioning were points of emphasis at practice all week.

5. Montgomery (1-0): Since 2001, only one Montgomery team has started 2-0, that being the 2021 squad which came within a 2-point conversion of reaching the district final. The Raiders will try adding their name to that list before playing their home opener next week.

6. Loyalsock (0-1): That Loyalsock would have a tougher time running the ball without standout Dolan Harman was not surprising. What was quite shocking at Mifflinburg, however, was how the line was dominated on both lines of scrimmage. Loyalsock features a large and experienced line, but Mifflinburg out-rushed it, 234-30.

7. Muncy (0-1): After allowing an opening kick return and a touchdown drive on Warrior Run’s first series, the defense surrendered just one more score that last week, and that was just a 30-yard drive. If the offense catches up to the defense, Muncy will again be dangerous in the Class A field.

8. Hughesville (0-1): Playing with two of its premier linemen who were at boot camp, Hughesville still had a shot at victory until Montgomery recovered a last-second onside kick. Back at full strength, the Spartans have a shot at finishing what they started last week.

9. South Williamsport (0-1): South has built a winning tradition around a smash-mouth offense? So, maybe this year it is switching it up and going Air Raid? Most likely, no. Still, Cole Gerber’s 23 pass attempts at Athens last Friday were the most attempted by a Mountie quarterback this decade.

10. Lewisburg (0-1): Quarterback Xavier Carter intercepted more passes than he threw interceptions last week. The safety picked off a pass and did not throw an interception, helping him ascend to the top of the Sun-Gazette passer rating leader board.

11. Cowanesque Valley (1-0): What a night it was for the Stahli family last Saturday with Levi and Cam connecting on a touchdown and Levi running for another. The cherry on top was Cam forcing a fumble and returning it 65 yards for a fourth quarter touchdown in that 38-0 win against Towanda.

12. North Penn-Mansfield (1-0): Luke Kreger and Milton’s Monty Fisher could be in a competition to see if either can become the area’s first player in the 2000s to run for 1,000 rushing yards in a season after also having a 1,000-yard receiving year. Both topped 100 rushing a week ago.

13. Canton (1-0): Daniel Inman lived an offensive lineman’s dream last week, scoring his first varsity touchdown when he recovered a fumble for Canton’s first touchdown. It was a game-changer, too, igniting a run of 17 straight points as the Warriors rallied for their eighth straight season-opening win.

14. Milton (0-1): Jackson Wertz wasted little time building on last year’s breakout campaign, collecting a career-high 10 tackles against Shikellamy last Friday.

15. Wellsboro (0-1): Playing at Montoursville in the opener was a tall order, but that experience could benefit Wellsboro going forward. If the Hornets stay healthy, they could remain in the race for No. 2 in the NTL-I behind defending Class AA champion Troy which likely will run the regular season table again.

16. Central Mountain (0-1): Although the score was lopsided, an encouraging sign for the Wildcats could be allowing just 221 yards. The offense, though, will have to do a better job sustaining drives to keep that unit fresher.

17. Bucktail (0-1): The Bucks head to Dr. Masse’s old stomping grounds, playing Renaissance Academy at Glen Mills. Rumor has it that Doc threw a baton in frustration there once upon a time after anchoring his 400 relay relay team at the Delco Relays since he was upset it did not win the race. This, though, has not yet been confirmed.

Starting at $2.99/week.
