Week 2 football roundup: Hughesville beats Towanda

Hughesville's defense played as solid as you could hope for and offensively, the Spartans scored 32 points en route to a 32-0 rout over Towanda on the road on Friday night in Week 2 football action.

Jedediah Abernatha scored on a 9-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter to put Hughesville ahead, 6-0, with 3:44 to play in the first.

The Spartans would score on field goals in back-to-back possessions to increase the lead to 12-0 and scored with 9.5 seconds left util halftime on a 23-yard pass from Nicholas Stubbs to Connor Anstadt.

Hughesville's second-half touchdowns came on a 2-yard run by Abernatha and a 33-yard pick-six by Carson Stackhouse.

Chase Shrawder led Hughesville's ground game with 97 rushing yards on 20 carries and Connor Anstadt had six carries for 19. Abernatha had six carries for 13 yards and two touchdowns.

Nicholas Stubbs went 5 for 13 for 82 yards.

Hughesville out-gained Towanda offensively, 213-(minus 7).

Towanda's ground game was never established as Hughesville played solid, holding the Black Knights to negative-27 rushing yards and just 20 passing yards.

WARRIOR RUN 34, MONTGOMERY 7

Cohen Zechman had a 45-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and returned a fumble 33 yards in the second quarter as Warrior Run defeated Montgomery, 34-7, to move to 2-0 and drop the Red Raiders to 1-1.

Warrior Run jumped out to a 17-0 first-half lead and led 24-0 early in the fourth quarter.

Montgomery avoided the shutout with 7:29 to play in the game when Parker Persing broke a 43-yard touchdown run to make it a 24-7 deficit.

Persing would end the game with 102 rushing yards on 12 carries and Trace Furman ran for 69 yards on nine carires for the Red Raiders. Warrior Run was led by Denyn Beachel's 89 rushing yards and James Keifer's 130 passing yards.

The Red Raiders out-gained Warrior Run, 283-257, but weren't able to mount scoring drives to win.

SHIKELLAMY 29, LEWISBURG 27

With 17.4 seconds remaining and trailing by four points to Lewisburg, Shikellamy quarterback Brody Rebuck called his own number to cap a 12-play, 73-yard drive and give Shikellamy a thrilling victory over the Green Dragons in Lewisburg, 29-27.

The touchdown put the Braves ahead by two with 17.4 left and the defense did the rest. It's the first 2-0 start for Shikellamy since 2009.

The Green Dragons held a 27-23 lead with 6:40 to play in the game when Xavier Carter had a 4-yard run.

Rebuck ended the game for the Braves with two touchdowns and 47 rushing yards while Mike Vaders ran for 33 yards on five carries. Rebuck threw for 236 on 19 for 28 passing and two touchdown strikes.

Carter went 9 for 21 with 158 yards and two touchdowns and on the ground, he carired ti six times for 35 yards. David Shuey led Lewisburg with 64 rushing yards and Nick Coleman ran it seven times for 48 yards and a touchdown.

As a team, Shikellamy out-gained Lewisburg, 343-304.

WYALUSING 30, COWANESQUE VALLEY 14

Cowanesque Valley scored twice in the final minute of the second quarter to take a seven-point lead over Wyalusing, but the Rams would score 23 second-half points to defeat the Indians, 30-14.

Levi Stahli threw two second-quarter touchdown passes for Cowanesque Valley. Wtih 57 seconds left, he found Christian Permodo for an 8-yard strike. Then, with 11 seconds until halftime, Stahli connected on a 30-yard pass to Cam Stahli to go into the break up 14-7.

In the third quarter, Wyalusing would tie the game when Reuben Kinney threw an 18-yard pass to Andrew Taylor with 4:34 to play to make it 14-14.

In the fourth quarter, Ethan Vanderpool had a 4-yard touchdown run to put Wyalusing ahead, 21-14, before Kinney found Taylor again for a 45-yard touchdown pass. Wyalusing added a safety in the final 15 seconds.

Jonathan Earle had Wyalusing's first touchdown, rushing for 4 yards in the first quarter.

NP-MANSFIELD 25, SAYRE 0

North Penn-Mansfield defeated Sayre, 25-0. Luke Kreger had 96 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns while Jeremiah Lawrence had 121 yards on 21 carries and scored a touchdown.

Defensively, Mansfield played well in not allowing Sayre to put together scoring drives en route to the shut out victory.
