Make it two for two for West End’s 13-16-year-old all-star team at the Babe Ruth Baseball World Series in Branson, Missouri. The West End all-stars moved to 2-0 at the Series after routing Puerto Rico, 10-0, in five innings.
West End’s offense opened the game with four runs in the first inning and the Williamsport-based baseball squad never looked back from there.
“Being the home team and having Trey have a shut down top of the first then coming in to score four really helped the momentum of the game,” West End coach Marc Hess said.
West End’s offense collected eight hits in the win. Trey Damschroder went 2 for 3 wtih two runs scored while Briar Persing went 2 for 3 wtih a double, three RBIs and three runs and Noah Kirby came up big with a 2 for 3 effort with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. West End’s Zack Neill went 1 for 3 with a double and RBI and Nate Crowe went 1 for 1 wtih a double, RBI and a walk. Jaymes Carpenter had a team-high two walks.
West End’s pitchers came up big for a second straight game. Trey Damscrhdoer threw 4 innings and scattered two hits with a strikeout to secure the win. Puerto Rico’s two hits were both singles. Isaac Sparks closed the game out with a flawless fifth inning.
“Trey has been throwing the ball very well for the last few weeks and then getting Isaac his first World Series pitching experience with a 1-2-3 fifth inning is a good feeling,” Hess said.
West End scored twice in the third inning to increase its lead to 6-0 and then put the mercy rule into effect thanks to a four-run fourth inning to lead 10-0.
The two wins have West End sitting at 2-0 as the Williamsport all-stars head into Sunday for a doubleheader.
“The kids are definitely feeling positive after the first two games, but two more very good teams to play in 100 degree heat will be tough, but if we can win both tomorrow, we get a few extra days rest,” Hess said.
West End will play Gulf Shores on Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. before turning around to play Aruba at 5 p.m. in the final game prior to the elimination portion of the tournament.
