Bucktail football earns Week 2 victory via unfortunate forfeit due to ref shortage
GLEN MILLS – On Friday evening, Bucktail (1-1) made the four-hour trip out to Glen Mills High School with the hope of putting an end to a 12-game losing streak spanning back to 2023 against developing program, Renaissance Academy. It’d go on to do just that, but not in the way the Bucks were hoping.
Upon arrival, they warmed up as usual, but the Knights never took the field according to Bucktail football coach Kevin Ransom. It was soon revealed that the assignor didn’t assign enough officials for the game to move forward.
Though Ransom and Renaissance Academy coach Harold Smith worked to get the necessary number over, it didn’t happen. Having made the long trip over, the Bucks were granted the win by forfeit, ending its loss streak in insignificant fashion.
“(The) kids are disappointed,” said Ransom on the result. “Although they (Renaissance Academy) were big, this was definitely a team we were going to compete with.”
Ten minutes after the set game time of 7 p.m., Ransom met with Smith to discuss the situation. They had one official on site, two on the way and agreed that if they could get the required number of officials (five) by 8 p.m., they’d compete as planned.
But as 8 p.m. passed, the number of referees on site remained one. With Bucktail’s long postgame drive back, it decided it couldn’t hold out longer, and the game was marked a win by forfeit for the Bucks.
Renaissance Academy (0-2), a still relatively new program searching for its first win in school history, was an opponent coach Kevin Ransom and the Bucks felt they had a good shot at defeating.
While it technically did that, missing out on the opportunity to earn a win outright still stings.
Nonetheless, the Bucks will look to shake off the disappointment as they prepare for their next matchup against Moniteau (1-1) on the road. That game’s set for 7 p.m. in West Sunbury.
