Four score goals as Williamsport girls defeat Jersey Shore 5-1

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport players celebrate a goal by Noel Veldhuis (3) during the first period of a high school girls soccer game between Williamsport and Jersey Shore on Monday at Balls Mills Soccer Club.

Prior to the start of Monday afternoon’s game at Balls Mills between Williamsport and Jersey Shore in girls soccer, Millionaire coach Beckham Sibiski told his players that they need to be the aggressors in the game this time.

Far too many times in 2025, Sibiski’s seen the Millionaires give up the first goal of the game.

So, the game plan was simple: score. Sibiski didn’t expect his team to score just as fast as they did though.

It took just 14 seconds for Williamsport to find the back of the net and the Millionaires never looked back. Williamsport scored five goals en route to a 5-1 win against Jersey Shore.

“I really pressured the girls to have an intense warm up, let’s step up our game and be ready to go from the start and voila, it happened right away,” Sibiski said. “I didn’t expect it to happen that fast, but Jaelynn did a great job breaking through and Noel (Veldhuis) did a great job with the rest.”

The win snaps a tough two-game skid the Millionaires suffered after getting shut out by both Central Columbia (5-0) and Abington Heights (7-0).

Noel Veldhuis got a ball to open the game and took a shot from 10 yards out, only to see it ricochet off the left post. It bounced back to her and she was able to send it in to the left for a 1-0 lead.

It remained a one-goal game until the Millionaires came out with two goals in the final 21:08 of the half.

With 21:08 showing on the clock, it was Loisa Hofstrom which scored after she was fed a ball by Helmrich — her second assist of the day — to make it a quick 2-0 lead and then with 8:20 remaining, Breah Phillips scored off an assist by Hofstrom.

The Millionaires took the 3-0 lead into the half.

“Obviously it was a little frustrating. We came out flat in the second half because the goal was to keep scoring and win four, five, six-nothing if we could. You always want to keep a clean sheet, but Im happy we reacted and didn’t let it become too much of a close game.,” Sibiski said.

Jersey Shore made things interesting late in the first half. That’s when Sadie Schall lined up to take a penalty kick for the Bulldogs, which she tried sending to her right. But McKylee Vollman came up with a big stop to keep Jersey Shore off the scoreboard.

But the Bulldogs came out motivated at the half and needed just 23 seconds to find the back of the net. Schall was able to get a breakaway to start the second half and had a 1-v-1 look with Vollman. Schall took a shot, which was blocked, but came back to her and she was able to bury the second shot to the left for a 3-1 deficit.

“That’s the one thing I noticed too even from last year moving into this year is typically as soon as a team would go up on us we’d shut down and you’d see those — not that this was a close game by any means — but then you’d see those, six-, seven-goal losses,” Jersey Shore coach Sarah Luprek said. “But yeah, they have a much more positive mentality as well. These girls are a really good group of girls this year. I’m looking forward to growing the program with them and try to build it up.”

The momentum could have shifted had the Bulldogs made its penalty kick late in the first half coupled with Schall’s second-half fast strike. But rather, the Williamsport prevented Jersey Shore from clawing back and scored twice in the second half to seal the victory.

The Millionaires scored nine minutes after Jersey Shore cut the deficit to 3-1 when Helmrich scored off a Linah van Emrik assist to go back up by three, 4-1. Williamsport’s final goal came with 16:26 to play when Phillips put in her second goal of the day.

“It was nice. It’s always nice when the girls are unselfish at right times and selfish at the right times. I think we had a nice balance today, I’m still disappointed we didn’t score more,” Sibiski noted. “We had plenty of chances, but we know in different games we have to bury the singular chance or if we get two or three, we have to bury one of them. Today it took a couple of efforts from multiple people until we found a goal and continued breaking through. Still took a little bit of time to keep them going.”

Williamsport held a 15-7 edge in shots against Jersey Shore as the Bulldogs got more chances in the second half to shoot. The Millionaires possessed the ball throughout the first half and rarely allowed Jersey Shore chances early in the game.

While the Millionaires peppered the goal frequently, including rifling 13 shots in the first half — eight on frame — Jersey Shore did its best to not give Williamsport too many open looks or 1-v-1 opportunities.

“Most of our games we are playing a defensive game. We’re playing defense majority so kind of that shift in attack for us, it’s a new concept for us and something new we’re trying to learn how to do and how to do well,” Luprek said. “I’m hoping these next four games these girls will have some opportunities to string it together, look for those opportunities, see what it looks like out on the field and build with that.”

In the first half, Williamsport nearly scored another goal with 26:11 to play. That’s when Hofstrom got the ball from 10 yards out and had a nice shot low to the right, but Jersey Shore keeper Naia Notevarp had a good block to prevent a goal.
