Local football roundup: Hughesville defeats Midd-West on the road
Two interception returns propeled Hughesville to an 18-7 win against Midd-West on the road in Middleburg on Friday night in Week 5.
Hughesville trailed entering the fourth quarter, 7-5, in a low-scoring contest. With 10:42 to play, Josiah Abernatha picked off Brady Janovich for a 44-yard pick-6 and gave Hughesville its first lead, 11-7. And as Midd-West attempted to drive with under two minutes left, Carson Stackhouse picked Janovich off with 1:14 to play and returned it 18 yards for a game-sealing score.
Neither team put up incredible offensive numbers. Hughesville out-gained Midd-West in total offense, 161-73. Hughesville had 86 passing yards and 75 rushing yards. The Spartans did well defensively limiting Midd-West’s running game as the Mustangs had 23 carries for just 13 yards and Janovich had only 60 passing yards.
Hughesville’s Nicholas Stubbs went 6 for 12 for 48 yards and Connor Anstadt went 2 for 3 for 37.
DANVILLE 28, MILTON 17
Milton held a 10-7 lead after the second quarter, but a 14-point fourth quarter lifted the Ironmen past the Black Panthers for an 11-point victory.
Montgomery Fisher had two rushing touchdowns on Friday, including a 73-yard run to open the game and give Milton an early 7-0 lead.
He had a 29-yard run in the third quarter. Fisher ended with 33 carries for 204 yards as Milton ran the ball 41 times as a team for 203 yards. As a team, Milton had 319 yards of offense.
Landon Kehoe ran for 97 yards and a touchdown for Danville and Carter Raup had nine carries for 32 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Raup threw for 173 yards on 14 for 22 passing.
WELLSBORO 37, COWANESQUE 15
Wellsboro scored 12 second-quarter points and 19 in the third quarter en route to a 22-point win against NTL rival Cowanesque Valley.
Reed Richardson had a seven-yard run and Kody Enckk caught a 32-yard strike from Marek Mascho for a 12-0 second-quarter lead. In the third quarter, it was more of the same from the Green Hornets.
Mascho had a 3-yard touchdown run and Ethan Keane had a 23-yard touchdown reception from Griffin Morral. Morral would alsoo return an interception 30 yards for a 31-0 lead.
Cowanesque’s scores game with the game all but sealed. Kegan Lane scored on a 25-yard run with 8:55 to play in the game and then had a 60-yard run with 4:09 remaining to make it a 37-15 deficit.
