Local football roundup: South, Loyalsock both pick up victories in Week 6

South Williamsport’s Taylor Naguel recorded two interceptions, Garrett Lorson had an interception and South Williamsport’s defense played solid start to finish en route to a 54-6 win against Cowanesque Valley at home.

The Mounties allowed just 28 passing yards and held Cowanesque Valley to 131 rushing yards on 27 carries. South out-gained Cowanesque Valley in dominating fashion, 502-159.

The Mounties jumped out to a 28-0 lead against the Indians.

Cade Lusk had a 28-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Levi Butler had a 19-yard pass from Cole Gerber for a 14-0 lead in the first. Butler would then catch a 15-yard pass from Gerber in the second quarter and Neeko Bowen had a 25-yard pass from Gerber for a 28-0 lead before the Indians scored.

Cowanesque Valley’s Kegan Lane had a 68-yard touchdown run to make it a 28-6 game, but that was the closest the Indians came against South. Garrett Lorson had a 47-yard touchdown run followed by a Lusk 15-yard strike before the half to go ahead, 42-6 at halftime.

South Williamsport scored a touchdown off a 46-yard Lusk run it the third and a 39-yard touchdown run by Lorson in the fourth.

Lusk ran for an impressive 222 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, Lorson had eight carries for 101 and two touchdowns and Gerber threw for 190 yards on 15 for 20 passing with three touchdowns.

Lane ran for 108 yards for Cowanesque Valley on 15 carries.

Butler was South’s top receiver as he had eight receptions for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

LOYALSOCK 14, LEWISBURG 7

It came down to the fourth quarter, but a win is a win and Loyalsock didn’t let Lewisburg spoil a home game. Nahmir Thomas caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Danny Dowell in the fourth quarter to give Loyalsock the lead and ultimately the win in an exciting game, 14-7, over the Green Dragons.

Entering the fourth quarter, the two were deadlocked at 7-all. That came to be after Ethan Long punched in a one-yard touchdown run in the thrid quarter.

Loyalsock scored first in the first when Jahki Brisker had a six-yard touchdown catch from Dowell.

Loyalsock held a 313-218 edge in yards.

Dowell went 10 for 14 for 87 yards and two touchdowns while the ground game saw Jalil Coates have another 100-yard performance, thi time rushing for 137 on 30 carries. Dowell added 86 rushing yards on 14 attempts.

Lewisburg had success on the ground as well as Nick Coleman ran it 18 times for 172 yards and as a team, the Green Dragons had 190 rushing yards to Loyalsock’s 225. The Lancers did well defending the pass as Lewisburg’s Xavier Carter had just 28 passing yards on 6 for 8 passing.

SHIKELLAMY 14, CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 7

Central Mountain showed it has the toughness and resiliency to compete with teams on Friday in Week 6. While the Wildcats didn’t earn their first win of the year, Central Mountain battled Shikellamy tough in a close 14-7 loss.

The Braves took a 14-0 lead into the break. In the first quarter, Brody Rebuck found Thomas Pollock for a 22-yard strike with 8:01 to play to go ahead, 7-0. And just two minutes into the second quarter, Luke Keally had a 20-yard touchdown run to give the Braves a 14-0 lead.

But the Wildcats’ defense played outstanding from there. Central Mountain didn’t allow Shikellamy to increase its lead and kept battling until the end. In the third quarter, the Wildcats finally got onto the scoreboard.

With 5:04 to play in the third quarter, Alex Johnson found Dalton McDermott for a 19-yard touchdown strike and cut the deficit to 14-7. While the Wildcats didn’t tie the game in the final 17 minutes, they still battled and played hard until the final whistle to try to rally.

Shikellamy had 360 yards of offense, but Central Mountain didn’t allow big plays to let the game turn into a mercy-rule affair.

Rebuck ran for 98 yards on 18 carries, Luke Keally ran for 53 and a score on 13 and Tristan Smith had 50 yards on eight carries. Shikellamy gained 296 yards as a team on the ground.

The Wildcats struggled offensively, but stayed in the game until the end with just 76 yards of offense, 41 of which came on the ground.

Dalton McDermott led the Wildcats with 22 rushing yards and Alex Johnson finished 2 for 4 for 35 passing yards and a touchdown. Rebuck was 9 for 19 for 124 yards and a touchdown. Central Mountain also forced an interception on defense.

TOWANDA 41, CANTON 14

Canton trailed Towanda just 7-6 with 9:41 to play in the second quarter, but the Black Knights kept the foot on the gas offensively and won, 41-14.

After Aaden Dowling scored from a yard out for Canton to make it 7-6 with 9:41 in the quarter, Towanda would proceed to score five consecutive touchdowns before Canton scored again in the fourth quarter.

Curtis Maynard had three touchdowns — of 1, 6 and 1 yards, respectively — while Jazick Brown had a 32-yard touchdown run. Brown also had a 21-yard touchdown in the first quarter.

Towanda out-gained Canton in offense, 336-248, as Brown ran for 123 yards on nine carries and Maynard had 16 for 84 and three scores. Owen Moore had success passing for the Warriors. The Canton quarterback went 11 for 25 for 223 yards and a touchdown. Canton struggled on the ground, however, rushing for just 25 yards on 26 carries.

ATHENS 35, WELLSBORO 22

A 21-point fourth quarter helped seal Athens’ 35-22 win against NTL rival Wellsboro in Week 6 action. Athens’ running back Karson Sipley had three rushing touchdowns in the third quarter for Athens, including a 22-yard run and 12-yard run, to help put the game away.

He ended with 18 carries for 122 yards and four touchdowns while standout Connor Davidsn had 200 rushing yards and a touchdown on 30 carries. Athens ran the ball at will for 51 attempts for 319 yards as Wellsboro couldn’t stop the Wildcats from moving the chains.

Athens out-gained Wellsboro in total offense, 450-318.

Davidson also threw the ball for 118 yards.

Griffin Morral saw success for the Green Hornets with 236 passing yards including two touchdowns and ran for a team-high 39 yards.

Marek mascho caught a 53-yard touchdown in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 11:26 to play. That would remain the score heading into the break. The Green Hornets went ahead when Morral found Ethan Keane for 24 yards with 7:27 to play in the third quarter, 14-7.

But from there, Athens would score four touchdowns to seal the win.
