Local roundup: Ava Eyer records 50th career goal in Muncy’s 2-0 day at NEB Tournament

Ava Eyer recorded a hat trick and, in the process, reached 50 goals for her career as Muncy defeated Northeast Bradford, 4-0, to improve to 6-0.

Eyer scored twice in the first half before adding her third goal in the 55th minute.

Ella Nagel had two assists, Zoe Kunkle added a goal and Kiki Woodward and Alexis McKeta had assists in the victory.

Earlier in the day, Muncy blanked Williamson in the first game of the Northeast Bradford Tournament, 7-0. In that game Ava Eyer scored three goals while Ella Nagel, Alexis McKeta, Kiki Woodward and Amelia Beckman all scored.

Kylie Temple recorded a hat trick with an assist while Elizabeth Wolfe had three assists and Katelyn Temple scored twice in Hughesville’s 8-0 rout over Wellsboro in girls soccer.

The Spartans went ahead 2-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game and held a 3-0 lead at the half. Hughesville scored five second-half goals as Giada Good, Jaysa Kiess and Avery Puderbach all scored.

“We faced one of the best teams I’ve seen and while the score didn’t go our way, our players gave everything they had,” Wellsboro first-year coach Michael Reese said. “We kept it close for as long as we could, and I was proud of how well they responded to the adjustments we made. This kind of effort builds character and prepares us for the challenges ahead.”

Ella Wertman scored the game-winning goal in overtime in the final minutes to give Warrior Run an exciting 1-0 win against Mifflinburg. The Defenders out-shot the Wildcats, 34-0, however Mifflinburg’s keeper produced 28 saves to keep Mifflinburg in the game and force overtime.

Kloey Persun had three goals and three assists while Addisyn Morrison had two goals and three assists to lead South Williamsport to an 8-1 win against Sullivan County. The Mounties’ Ayla Minier, Ana Oeler and Ella Moore all had goals while Moore had an assist as well.

North Penn-Mansfield trailed Northumberland Christian by just two goals at halftime, but the Warriors earned a 6-3 win. Brooke WIlcox had a hat trick for North Penn-Mansfield and Laurel Morgan had two assists.

“The NPM Lady Tigers lost a tough battle. It was an intense game that could have gone either way. We were unable to put the ball into the net during the first half despite taking five shots at the goal,” Mansfield coach Maryann Wilcox said.

Abington Heights handed Williamsport a lopsided defeat, 7-0. McKylee Vollman recorded seven saves for the Millionaires and Hannah Baird recorded three, but Williamsport’s offense wasn’t able to find the back of the net.

• Montoursville’s boys soccer team picked up another win, defeating Sullivan County, 5-1, to move to 7-0. The Warriors held just a 2-0 lead at the half. Sullivan County’s Colin King converted a penalty kick 11 minutes into the second half to cut the deficit to one, but the Warriors responded with three unanswered goals to seal the win.

CJ Lucas scored twice, Bryce Winslow, Adam Shearer and Landon Mertes had goals and Quinn Winslow dished out two assists.

Lewisburg improved to 7-0 by defeating State College in a tough home match, 1-0. With 23:47 to play in the second half, Viktor Permyashkin fed a ball to Isaac ayres who put it in for the game’s lone goal.

Lewisburg out-shot State College, 13-6, as Gabe Pawling had four saves for the shutout.

Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch earned his 100th win as the Green Hornets’ coach in Wellsboro’s 5-0 shutout over Towanda on the road. Jacoby Strang had to goals and an assist for Wellsboro and Jonathan Carl had two goals and an assist.

Wellsboro out-shot Towanda, 10-5.

“The boys put together a solid performance. Their shots on goal to goals scored average was up by 35% compared to Thursday’s match vs. Troy and our defenders and keepers earned another clean sheet,” Fitch said. “It was a complete team effort today.”

North Penn-Liberty defeated Northeast Bradford in a close game, 2-1. Liberty’s two goals came from David Graf.

• Hughesville’s girls tennis team improved to 9-1 with an exciting 3-2 win against South Williamsport. The Spartans and Mounties split the doubles competition and Hughesville picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles.

At No. 1 singles, Georgia Randall defeated Emma mcLaughlin in three sets, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 3 singles, it was another three-set thriller as Talia Saka beat Morgan Ertel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Both doubles matches went three sets as well.

Gracie Budman and Caroline Hicks of Hughesville won at No. 1 doubles over va Foote and Peyton Coolidge, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, South’s Carly Loudenslager and Caroline Melvin won 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 over Carly Sones and Shelby Myers.

South’s other win came at No. 2 singles Mylee Morrison beat Rebecca Roberts, 6-2, 6-0.

Abington Heights blanked Jersey Shore, 5-0. Jersey Shore’s Josie Gerst played tough at No. 1 singles, but Abington Heights’ Sona Hanumal earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory. At No. 2 doubles, Jersey Shore’s Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski battled in close sets, but lost to Abington Heights’ Jenna Follansbee and Brielle Crowell, 6-3, 6-2.

Wellsboro defeated Cowanesque Valley, 5-0. Olivia Gage secured a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against MacKenna Burdick. At No. 2 singles, Evelyn Wetherbee beat Holly Peers, 6-0, 6-1 and at No. 3 singles, Wellsboro’s Kyleigh Lynn beat Lexi Brown, 6-1, 6-0.

• Lewisburg defeated Montoursville, 3-1, in girls volleyball. Montoursville lost the first game 25-14 before evening it at 1-1 with a 28-26 second-game win. But Lewisburg would close it out with 25-15 and 25-22 wins.

Ella Vance had a team-high nine digs and seven kills and Claire Chandler had 21 assists and eight digs for Lewisburg. Virginia MOrini had six kills, Ellis Reed had six digs and four kills and Brooke Leauber had three kills and two aces.

Penelope Voneida had four kills.

Statistics for Montoursville were not made available.

Williamsport defeated Wellsboro, 3-2 (25-14, 16-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-7) as the Millionaires played solid to claim the final two games and secure the five-set win.

Ady Frantz led Wellsboro with 14 kills, Ellie Largey had 15 assists, Maddy Cruttenden had an impressive 32 digs and Blake Eckart had 17 digs and 10 points.

Statistics for the Millionaires were not made available.

• Lock Haven’s men’s soccer team fell to Findlay, 2-0, in the Bald Eagles’ home opener at Hubert Jack Stadium. Findlay, who entered the season nationally ranked, took a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute of the first half before adding an insurance goal late in the second to seal the win.

Lock Haven dominated possession in the second half and led 3-1 in shots on goal, but Findlay turned away mutliple scoring opportunities. Josh Horn and Patricio Zapata recorded the shots on goal for Lock Haven.

In goal, Ethan Beck had a save for Lock Haven while the defense as a whole limited Findlay to just two shots on goal.

Lock Haven is now 1-2-1 and hosts Shippensburg in non-conference action on Wednesday.

Senior Christian Woobay led the Lycoming College men’s soccer team, which snapped a three-game scoreless stretch just 11 minutes into the game as Lycoming beat Mount Aloysius, 3-0.

The Warriors (1-2-2 overall) got on the board with a goal from freshman Leandro Cruz (Nottingham, Md./Loyola Blakefield) off a give from Woobay. Cruz returned the favor on Woobay’s goal in the 21st minute, giving Lycoming a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Just over a minute into the second half, sophomore Jake Keeney dented the twine, with Woobay and junior Aidan Stillman each earning assists.

Zane Domsohn and Drew Roskos’ first-half goals powered Bucknell to its first Patriot League over Lafayette in a 2-0 result at Gummeson Grounds. The Bison posted their first clean sheet of the season and allowed no shots on target.

Bucknell (4-1-1, 1-0 PL) picked up its first win over the Leopards since 2018 and snap a six-game streak without a win. The Bison evened the all-time series with the Leopards to 33-33-11.

“I’m proud of our defense today and getting the clean sheet which was overdue in some ways,” said head coach Dave Brandt. “We had plenty of chances to put the game away and we know 2-0 is a dangerous score. These league matches are a dogfight and we know how tough they’re going to be.”

The Bison held Lafayette (2-4-1, 0-1 PL) to just three shots in the match and one on target. The Leopards’ biggest threat of the match came late in the second half on a shot that was blocked in traffic.

• Sophomore Ella Magee notched a hat trick in the first half, all of set kicks, to lead the Lycoming College women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over 2024 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference runners-up Pitt-Greensburg.

The Warriors got a penalty kick in the third minute, as junior Kaitlyn Born was tripped in the box, setting up Magee’s first goal. In the 28th minute, Magee struck again on a true Olimpico in the 28th minute and she capped the half by scoring after the Warriors earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box.

With seven goals and six assists, Magee has reached 20 points for the second straight year after she had nine goals and three assists for 21 points as a rookie.

The Lock Haven women’s soccer team hosted 23rd-ranked Kutztown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest in Lock Haven’s home opener and Senior Day for the program. Kutztown won the match 3-1.

The Bald Eagles honored seniors Abi Amaya, Jakayla Holmes, Lauren Straub, Quelyn Nepa, Olivia Hudson, Leana Cuzzocrea, Emmie Parks, Emily Reeve, Makayla Grace Weber, Megan Miller and Julia Tavares prior to the start of the match.

Trailing 2-0 with just under 30 minutes to go, Lock Haven cut the lead in half when Bryn Constanzer buried her first goal of the season.

• Hughesville graduate Kenneth Draper postd a 5K time of 17:27.70 to win the men’s race and lead Lycoming’s cross country teams at the Juniata College-hosted Eagle Invite. He’s the first Warrior male to win a cross country event since Scott Condello won the Baptist Bible Invitational in 2000.

The Warrior women had five runners finish in the top-10 of the 23-runner field.as they took second. Junior Ella Scott paced the Warriors, finishing fourth in 23:27.10 and junior Sydney Taylor, posted a time of 24:10.70. Junior Gwyneth Fox ran a 25:10.00 for eighth, junior Anna Kauffman ran a 25:57.70 for ninth and Ann-Marie McMurtrie, a junior, ran a 26:11.90 to take tenth.

• The Lock Haven (1-4) volleyball team took down Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (17-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 15-9), on day two of the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 13. The Bald Eagles fell to the host, 3-0 (22-25, 24-26, 15-25), in their final match of the day.

Lock Haven stormed past Virginia Union in a five-set thriller, 3-2, to collect its first win of the season.

For Lock Haven against West Virginia Wesleyan, Wolzen and Mitchell each finished with a team-high 12 kills. Wolzen led the Bald Eagles’ in scoring with 13.5 points.

Mitchell added 11 diggs, while Taylor finished with a team-high 12.

Freshman Kamryn Skeith notched her fourth triple-double of the season and the Lycoming College women’s volleyball team had four other players finish with four kills as it defeated La Roche, 3-1 (20-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17) to kick off a tri-match at Chatham University’s Athletic & Fitness Center. The Warriors fell to the hosts, 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22).

Skeith posted 10 kills, 14 assists and 12 digs against the Redhawks (2-3 overall) to lead the team, while first-years Charlene Petreshock and Emi Wenger, junior Alli Macensky (a Galeton graduate)) and senior Cameron Upcraft each posted seven kills.

Wenger added 18 digs, tied for the team lead with junior Ima Mercado, who also had two aces. Junior Haley Balgavy added 19 assists, four aces and six digs, Macensky added two aces and Upcraft posted two blocks.

• Four goal scorers came through as the No. 9 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team (3-1) continued their home stint to begin the season against Frostsburg State (0-3) with the Mounties pulling away the 4-0 victory.

Ella Du Plessis and Jenna Duke posted the first three shots before Katie Thomas gave the first goal for the red and black to hold the 1-0 advantage after the opening quarter and into the half.

Duke delivered a slapper from 15 yards away to grab the 2-0 edge through the third quarter.

• Freshman Josh Myers, a Hughesville graduate, reached the semifinals at No. 2 singles to lead the Lycoming College men’s tennis team at the King’s Invitational.

Myers notched an 8-1 win over King’s College and will meet Muhlenberg in the semifinals when the tournament resumes on Sunday at 9 a.m. in Kirby Park.
