Local roundup: Four-goal flurry propels Hughesville boys soccer past Muncy
Hughesville unleashed a four-goal flurry in less than 10 minutes, turning its rivalry game against Muncy completely around as it rallied for a 5-2 win. Muncy had taken a 2-1 lead on Landyn Burns second goal with 31 minutes, 53 seconds remaining, but Landon Miller scored on consecutive penalty kicks, the first coming just 24 seconds later. His second followed at the 67:14 mark and put Hughesville ahead to stay. Sam Haddon then clinched victory, scoring two goals 64 seconds apart. Daeus Trager scored Hughesville’s first goal after Burns opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game.
Gideon Kennell recorded a hat trick and Ori Kennell added two goals, helping Warrior Run boys’ soccer blank Williamsport, 6-0. Ryan Kernock also scored for the Defenders. Ori Kennell had two assists.
David Graf, Bryce Kent and Kai Wheeland all scored second half goals, helping North Penn-Liberty erase a 1-0 halftime deficit and rally past Galeton for a 3-1 win. Deakon Valentine made seven saves in goal for the Mounties.
South Williamsport struggled to hold back Benton’s potent offense throughout Tuesday’s match, falling to the Tigers, 5-1, while dealing with 17 shots on goals. In goal, Dylan Webb did all he could, securing 12 saves. And South’s lone goal on the night was scored by Gavin Freas deep in the second period, with Carson Harris assisting on it.
In girls soccer, Mifflinburg picked up a 2-0 win against Loyalsock, scoring a goal in both halves. Lillian Fredrick and Ava LeMay both scored for the Wildcats.
Ava DeKnecht was in goal for Loyalsock and recorded 10 saves to keep the game close.
Peyton Coolidge and Ava Foote highlighted South Williamsport’s 4-1 victory against Central Columbia, winning a three-set thriller which featured two sets going beyond regulation. Coolidge and Foote dropped the first set, 6-7 but won the next, 6-3 before outlasting Savana Thomas and Chloe Winters, 11-9 in the long third. Emma McLaughlin, Mylee Morrison and Morgan Ertel all added straight-set singles wins for South.
Montoursville won all five matches in straight sets, defeating Mifflinburg, 5-0. Mya Wilson and Ava Barto won a hard-fought No. 1 doubles match, taking the first set in a tiebreaker before finishing it off, 6-2 in the second. Elsa Kehrer, Ali Ravet and Bella Aldinger all won singles matches and the team of Analiese Crossen and Cadence Emick won in straight sets as well.
Caroline Crawford won a three-set match at No. 1 singles, helping Loyalsock defeat Milton, 4-1. Crawford dropped the second set 4-6, but won the first and third sets, 6-0. Gia Biacchi also won in singles for Loyalsock while Carrie King was victorious for Milton at No. 3 singles. Lashlyn Sauers and Kaylene Kriner, as well as Kinsley Hill and Annalise Berger won straight-set doubles matches for Loyalsock.
Rebecca Roberts rallied from a set down and defeated Christian Zheng in three sets at No. 2 singles, helping Hughesville edge Lewisburg, 3-2 as it stayed undefeated. Lewisburg’s Ella Markunas fought back from a set down as well, to win at No. 3 singles. Georgia Randall and the doubles team of Carly Sones and Shelby Myers helped Hughesville hold off Lewisburg to improve to 6-0.
Both the Sullivan girls and boys cross country teams improved to 2-0, winning close meets against Northeast Bradford, 15-21 and 27-29, respectively. Zoey Reese took second in the girls race in 22 minutes, 25 seconds, while teammate Addison Templin was fourth in 23:23. Paige Jordan took sixth in 24:08. Carter Blasi and Calen Sweigart took third and fourth in the boys race in 18:44 and 18:52. Sullivan had four runners place in the top 10.
The Central Mountain volleyball team faced off against DuBois on Tuesday, looking to protect its 7-0 record on the road. It did just that, blanking DuBois, 3-0, to make it eight straight wins to kick off the 2025 season. The set scores on the night were 25-21, 25-21 and 25-14.
Though the Green Dragons came close to extending it to a fourth set, they succumbed to a sweep at the hands of Loyalsock on Tuesday, falling 3-0 behind set scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-23. Four Lewisburg players posted three kills in Ella Vance, Brooke Leauber, Ellis Reed and Meg Mitchell, will Vance leading the team with nine digs and Leauber and Reed attributing an ace.
Claire Chandler led the team in assists with nine, adding four digs. Addison Putman posted four digs as well alongside two aces. And Katie Houtz had five digs, adding two kills and two assists.
The Central Mountain boys cross country team defeated Loyalsock (15-50) and South Williamsport (15-50) but fell to Danville (41-18) in a quad meet on Tuesday afternoon. Damien Winner led the way for the Wildcats, running a 19:25.14. Riley Gonzales finished behind him with a 19:47.83. And three other Wildcats ran below a 21:00 in Latrell Walker (20:07.11), Shane Walker (20:14.49) and Che McCallister (20:36.83).
The Lycoming women’s soccer team remained undefefeated, thumping Keuka College, 5-0. The Warriors improved to 3-0 as Lewisburg graduate Mikayla Long scored three goals. Long became the eighth Lycoming player in history, and first since Bella Green in 2022 to reach 20 career goals with her first goal.
