Local roundup: Hughesville girls score eight goals in rout against Muncy

Hughesville scored five first-half goals en route to a lopsided 8-0 win against Muncy in girls soccer on Saturday morning, handing the Indians their second loss of the season.

Katelyn Temple scored twice while Elizabeth Wolfe, Ava Snyder, Kylie Temple, Jaysa Kiess, Caradyn McGinley and Bella Remsnyder all found the back of the net.

Kylie Temple added three assists for the Spartans.

Williamsport traveled to Athens and earned a 6-1 win over the Wildcats. Loisa Hofstrom recorded a hat trick while Deborah Shultz had two goals and Breah Phillips scored. Shultz had two assists while Jaelynn Helmrich, Loisa Hofstrom, Mila Veldhuis and Sydney Malee all had an assist.

In goal, McKylee Vollman had one save as the Millionaire defense prevented Athens from firing shots.

Loyalsock lost a close contest against Millville at home, 3-2. Brianna Kolk scored all three of Millville’s goals, two of which were in the second half. Loyalsock saw Madison Perry score twice and Reece Temple had an assist.

Ava Deknecht recorded seven saves for the Lancers.

Wellsboro scored two second-half goals to defeat Jersey Shore, 3-1. Rees Bierly scored off a Jassalyn Milbrand assist with 8:37 to play until halftime which tied the game at 1-1 before the Green Hornets’ Haylie Smith and Luna Moyer scored in the second half to seal the win.

“We came away with a 3-1 win by matching the physicality, keeping our composure, making smart runs and recognizing how our opponent was playing. The biggest factor was our defensive pressure, which set the tone for the match,” Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said. “A special mention goes to Carly Blcakwell, who stepped up in goal after an injury sidelined Jadyn (Dunlap). To perform at that level with so little preparation is extraordinary, and I couldn’t be more proud of her team-first mentality.”

Brooke Wilcox scored twice and Scarlett Graham had a goal as North Penn-Mansfield defeated Williamson, 3-0, in a NTL battle. Molly Hanawalt, Lakyn Messner, Colette Frey and Wilcox all had an assist.

“It was really good to see the freshman players getting on the scoreboard,” North Penn-Mansfield coach Maryann Wilcox said. “Freshman Scarlett Graham scored her first varsity goal tonight, freshman Colette Frey had her first varsity assist. Williamson put the pressure on our defense, but our defense did a fantastic job keeping the ball out of our goal. Great team win tonight.”

South Williamsport tied Lewisburg, 2-2. The Mounties’ goals came from Coco Kline and then Ella Moore, who headed in a goal off a corner kick. Kloey Persun had assists on both of the Mounties’ goals.

• Braego Cieslukowski made five saves, but Danville defeated Warrior Run, 3-2. The Ironmen led 2-1 at the break and didn’t let the Defenders take a lead.

Ian Miller and Ben Shaffer both scored for Warrior Run and Ori Kennell added an assist.

Wellsboro and Athens battled to a double overtime draw after 100 minutes of soccer, 0-0. 

“Our keeper and backline did a great job keeping the ball out of our net, and we had a couple scoring opportunities, but couldn’t find the finishing touch,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “I’m proud of the boy’s determination and effort to execute the things we’ve worked on and the adjustments we made throughout the match.”

Camden Tom had six saves for Wellsboro to keep Athens from scoring and taking a lead.

• At the NEPA Invitational in boys cross country, Warrior Run’s Aiden Hoffman led the area by finishing in fourth place with a time of 16:37.30. He trailed only Northwest’s Michael Fritz (15:54.70), Riverside’s Mikey Schiemelfenig (16:22.10) and Bellefonte’s Jonathan Gasper (16:25.70).

Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster took fifth in 16:41.50 as he set a PR with his time.

Montoursville’s Cy Haight ran a 17:23.50 to take 25th.

On the girls side, Sullivan County finished fourth in the team standings. Individually, Warrior Run senior Claire Dufrene ran a time of 18;26.70 to win the event and set a PR in the process. She wo by more than a minute as Towanda’s Maris Cobb took second in 19:36.90.

Sullivan County’s Addisyn Templin ran a 20:57.60 for 15th place and Zoey Reese of the Griffins was 18th in 21:07.70 and set a PR.

• In girls volleyball, Montoursville lost a 3-0 decision to Midd-West on the road. Midd-West won, 25-12, 25-16 and 25-15. The Warriors’ JV team fell as well, 2-1.

Wellsboro defeated Coudersport, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-23). Blake Eckart recorded 13 kills and Taylor Main had 20 assists. Maddy Cruttenten led the Green Hornets with 17 points and 17 digs.

• The Lycoming College cross country teams competed at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational, with the men’s team finishing in 15th place and the women finishing 17th out of the 21 schools present.

In the men’s 8K race, senior Kenneth Draper, a Hughesville graduate, was the top finisher for the Warriors, finishing with a time of 29:40. Junior Avery Rosan   was the second-fastest for Lycoming, finishing 99th with a time of 31:29. Freshman Jacob Carr finished in 32:35 and junior Jayden Drummond ran a 42:40.

On the women’s side in the 6K race, junior Ella Scott was the quickest Lycoming runner, clocking in at 28:26 for 92nd place. Junior Ann-Marie McMurtrie ran a 31:59 for 118th place, with juniors Miya Knippenburg and Anna Kauffman right behind her, running at a 32:00 and 32:41 pace, respectively, for 119th and 121st place.

Lock Haven’s men’s team finished sixth of 22 teams in a deep and talented field at the Lock Haven Invitational. Leading the way for Lock Haven was Brayden Frair, who finished 13th after covering the 8,000-meter course in 24:56.70.

Jakob Rager finished 23rd with a time of 25:18.10.

Cowanesque Valley graduate Kristian Mizdail (25:45.80, 43rd), Gavin Furey (25:57.30, 53rd) and Evan Klinger (26:29.60, 76th) rounded out the top five finishers for the Bald Eagles.

The top finisher in the White Race for Lock Haven was Anden Aitkins.

Kaydence Strange, who finished 49th after covering the 6,000-meter course in 23:06.10, led the LHU women.

Katie Todd finished 73rd with a time of 23:38.10. Adra Schell (24:14.10, 100th), Emily Black (24:19.20, 103rd) and Addison Farrer (25:12.30, 137th) rounded out the top five finishers for the Bald Eagles.

Mansfield also competed at the Lock Haven Invite. Alyssa Parks led the way for Mansfield with a time of 24:17.30. Marissa Allen finished second for the Mounties with a time of 24:54.90. 

Wyoming Trudeaux and Allyson Lewis finished packed up with times of 26:20.60 and 26:50.10 respectively. Mayla Falank (27:35.60), Abigail Davies (29:58.60), and Libby Moore (30:54.1) rounded out the day for the Mounties.

Penn College’s men’s cross-country team was 10th among 19 and its women were 16th of 19 at the Dickinson Long-Short Invitational.

In men’s competition, Ben Causak placed 56th of 161 who finished in 29:28 to lead the Wildcats, and was followed by Mitchell Campbell 71st in 30:00, Chase Ebeling 72nd in 30:01, Holden Furey 75th in 30:07, Aaron Guerrisky 94th in 31:13, Ethan Knapp 118th in 32:29, Oliver Galicki 121st in 32:35, Ben Heym 126th in 32:56, Owen Troop 141st in 35:14, Matthew Wheeland 144th 36:21, Nathan Love 145th in 36:50 and Jackson Small 146th in 36:59.

In women’s competition, Elaina Brady finished 84th among 138 who finished in 27:56 to lead the team. She was followed by Ellie Miller 106th in 29:40, Natalie Greiner 120th in 32:16, Adelyn McDermott 123rd in 33:27, Gwynn Johnson 126th in 34:28 and Isabella Telford 138th in 43:19.

• A first-half goal off a corner from freshman Xavier Dandridge helped the Lycoming College men’s soccer team earn a point in its Landmark Conference-opener, earning a 1-1 draw with two-time defending conference champions, The Catholic University of America.

Junior Aiden Stillman set up the goal in the 31st minute with a corner into the box that found Dandridge’s head before the ball flew into the right corner of the net, giving Lycoming (3-2-3 overall, 0-0-1 Landmark) a lead it held for the next 50 minutes before Seth Michalak tied the score in the 80th minute with the Cardinals’ lone goal.

Sophomore Jace Bennett had six saves, as Catholic (4-0-4 overall, 0-0-1 Landmark) took 24 shots in the game. Owen Allegro played in net for the Cardinals, facing two shots.

Penn College tied Cairn University, 1-1, in its United East men’s soccer opener. The Wildcats improved to 0-0-1 UE, 5-3-1 overall, while the Highlander sit at 0-0-1, 1-5-3.

Following a scoreless first half, CU struck first in the 58th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Logan Pietrzak finished Jimmy Friedman’s pass in the 76th to deadlock the match at 1-1. The Wildcats had three shots on goal after the Highlander’s score, but attempts from Silas Miller, Robert Antonini, and Pietrzak were stopped.

Cairn outshot PCT, 17-9 (5-5 on-goal) and held a 9-0 advantage on corner kicks. Justin Crismale stopped four shots in goal for the Wildcats.

• A lone goal shortly before halftime was the difference as the Lycoming College women’s soccer team continued their best start in program history with a 1-0 Landmark Conference win over the Catholic University.

Lycoming (10-0, 1-0) stayed perfect on the season in their lowest-scoring contest of the season, defeating Catholic (3-6-1, 0-1) in both teams’ conference opener.

Most of the first half was scoreless, but the Warriors pulled in front in the 44th minute when junior Julia Bidelspach found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season off an assist from junior Norah Mosley.

Despite a barrage of shots from the Cardinals in the second half, Lycoming held the lead the rest of the way, with no goals in the second half.

Penn College mauled its way to a 3-0 United East Conference opening victory at Cairn. The Wildcats extended its regular season unbeaten streak to  34 matches and begin the 2025 conference schedule at 1-0-0, 8-0-2 overall.

The Wildcats wasted no time to get on the board in the fourth minute when Brooke Klinger found Cadence Holmberg for her second strike of the season. Klinger added her second assist of the afternoon in the 59th minute to Ella Garman and a 2-0 lead. Sara Darlington scored unassisted in the 77th minute in the victory. 

Penn College dominated the offense score sheet with a 30-0 shot advantage and lined up for 17 corners. Freshman keeper Taylor Brownback behind the defensive line of Ashley Gordon, Riley Reed and Ava Gamble.

Mansfield (0-6) competed against Millersville (4-3-1) and the Mountaineers dropped a 6-0 decision to the Marauders. Millersville built an early lead and kept momentum throughout the match. 

Mansfield worked to generate opportunities in transition but were unable to break through. 

• The Lycoming college men’s tennis team earned their first victory of the season, defeating Misercordia, 5-2, for the team’s first win since a victory over Lancaster Bible College on March 28, 2024.

The Warriors took two of the three doubles sets, while also winning four of the six singles matches to take the victory. Lycoming moves to 1-2 while Misercordia fell to 0-1.

Senior Josh Neidert and freshman Josh Myers, a St. John Neumann graduate, teamed up for a 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles, followed by sophomores Logan Hammond, a Loyalsock graduate, and South Williamsport graduate Kayvan Shams cruising to a 6-1 victory in No. 2 doubles.

In singles action, Myers took No. 2 singles 6-7, 6-1, 10-2, Shams won No. 3 singles in a 6-2, 6-2 straight-set victory, then senior Luke Taylor, a Williamsport native, clinched the win for the Warriors by taking No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-3. Hammond added a final victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.

• The Lycoming college women’s tennis team lost on the road to Misercordia. Lycoming (1-4, 0-1) sent a pair of singles matches to a decisive third set, but were unable to break through against Misercordia (1-0).

The Warriors will play their second-to-last match of the fall on Tuesday hitting the road to take on Lock Haven at 4 p.m.

• The No. 7 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team started homecoming festivities with No. 2 Kutztown, but the Golden Bears escaped with the opening PSAC contest in a 3-2 victory over the Mountaineers.

An intense battle pushed out a score through Sophia Vadnais’s penalty stroke goal to start out with the 1-0 advantage on Karl Van Norman Field. With one second remaining in the half, Kutztown used a last chance penalty corner to even the score at 1-1, heading into halftime. The final ten minutes stole the show with three goals rattling the cage. The Golden Bears opened the door with nine minutes remaining to open the 2-1. 

• The Lock Haven volleyball team fell on the road 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 17-25, 19-25) at California (Pa.) in a non-conference match. Lock Haven jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the first set of the match, 25-22, behind 15 kills and nine Vulcans errors.

However, Cal rebounded to steal the ensuing three sets to secure the match victory.

Maddie Mitchell tallied a team-high 19 kills, followed by Gracelynn Wolzen and Avery Smith with 10 each. Gabby Gealey led with 19 assists, with Madelyn Wagner close behind at 18.

Olivia Taylor was the top defender with 23 digs, while Natalie Acevedo contributed 18 and Mitchell posted 16.
