Local roundup: Hughesville girls tennis blanks Mifflinburg 5-0, moves to 11-1
Hughesville’s girls tennis team moved to 11-1 after picking up a 5-0 win against Mifflinburg. Georgia Randall won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Spartans over Holly Swartz.
At No. 2 singles, Rebecca Roberst beat Rhyann Kurtz, 6-0, 6-0. Hughesville’s Talia Saka won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles competition, Gracie Budman and Caroline Hicks beat Alice Grill and Morgan Blake, 6-0, 6-0. At No.2 doubles, Carly Sones and Shelby Myers of Hughesville picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win against Breonna Zimmerman and Lucy Turner.
Williamsport fell to Danville, 4-1. The Millionaires’ win came at No. 2 doubles where the team of Gianna Vitko and Naomi Lee earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ellen Pena and Siyah Bhanushali. At No. 1 doubles, the Millionaires’ peyton Kelley and Maddy Lundy battled tough, falling to Danville’s Elyse Sparh and Sanah Bhanushali, 6-3, 6-3.
Danville’s Josie Bendle won at No. 1 singles over Audrey Dincher, 6-0, 6-1.
Loyalsock beat Montoursville, 5-0. Caroline Crawford (No. 1 singles), Gia Biacchi (No. 2) and Vivian Reem (No. 3) all earned wins.
Crawford beat Montoursville’s Elsa Kehrer, 6-0, 6-2. Biacchi earned a 6-1, 6-0 win against Ali Ravert. At No. 3 singles, Reem beat Bella Aldinger, 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Loyalsock’s Lastly Sauers and Kaylene Kriner beat Mya Wilson and Kenna Vought at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4 and at No. 2, Kinsley Hill and Annalise Berger beat Analiese Crossen and Cadence Emick, 6-1, 6-1.
South Williamsport defeated North Penn-Liberty at home, 5-0. Emma McLaughlin beat Annie Johns at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3. At No. 2 singles, Mylee Morrison picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Elyna Booth.
In doubles competition, the team of Carly Loudenslager and Caroline Melvin beat Caroline Cummings and Hailey Hess, 6-0, 6-0.
Jersey Shore defeated Selinsgrove, 5-0. Josie Gerst of the Bulldogs beat Alexis Hoot at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Julia Herman beat Madison Maneval at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-0 and at No. 3 singles, it was Miah Bassler defeating Molly Dalton, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles action, Azlyn Guerrero and Emily Shemory beat Talia Mowery and Anna Yang in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) while Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski beat Ashlyn Lehman and Emily Longacre, 6-4, 6-1.
Bucktail blanked Muncy, 5-0, to hand the Indians their seventh loss of the year. Eva Sockman won at No. 1 doubles for Bucktail against Zoe Dohl, 6-3, 6-1 while Kendall Wagner of Bucknell beat Lola Fox, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Muncy’s Miah Nicodemus fell at No. 3 singles to Bucktail’s Lola English, 6-1, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, Bucktail’s Kedda Bissman and Kelsie Wagner earned a 6-0, 6-4 win against Elizabeth Howard and Alaina Krepinevich. Carrie Ditty and Riley Salizzoni of Bucktail beat Haylee Younkin and Raegan Charles 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
Central Mountain suffered a 4-1 loss on the road to Central Columbia. The Wildcats’ lone win came at No. 3 singles where Kassie Williams won a three-set contest against Trul-Nhu Nguyen, 6-1, 2-6, 10-5.
At No. 2 singles, Central Mountain’s Lane Walker fell to Sydney Barry, 6-3, 6-2 and Lucy Walker of Central Mountain lost at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0 to Cassandra Marle.
Wellsboro defeatd Cowanesque Valley in a doubleheader, winning both matches 5-0.
In the first match, Olivia Gage earned a 6-1, 6-0 win against Ella Reed at No. 1 singles. Wellsboro’s Serenity Mosher beat Madisyn Sawyer, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
In the second match, Olivia Gage of Wellsboro defeated Markenna Burdick at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. Logan Root of Wellsboro earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles vs. Lexi Brown.
• In boys soccer, CJ Lucas recorded a hat trick while Bryce Winslow had two assists and a goal to help Montoursville remain unbeaten with a 6-0 rout against Shamokin. The win moves Montoursville to 9-0.
Adam Shearer and Christian Berwanger also recorded goals as Montoursville out-shot the Indians, 26-3.
Lewisburg’s Viktor Permyashkin scored twice to give Lewisburg a 3-0 win against Selinsgrove and improve to 8-0-1 and 3-0-1 in the league.
Logan Kitchens put Lewisburg ahead less than four minutes into the game off an assist by Keegan Crosby. Permyashkin scored off an Isaac Ayres assist with 31:10 remaining in the half. His final goal came with 4:00 to play off a Crosby assist.
• Emily Benjamin scored twice as Wellsboro rallied from a second-half 1-0 deficit to defeat Wyalusing, 2-1, and improve to 6-3.
Lila Paredes and Haylie Smith both added assists and Jadyn Dunlap recorded seven saves.
“Relentless is the word that defines our program tonight. Relentless effort, relentless pressure and relentless belief in our system,” Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said. “Our varsity battled back for a 2-1 win behind two goals from our senior captains, and our JV earned another clean sheet with a 1-0 victory. Both teams showed the same determination and grit.”
North Penn-Mansfield fell to Troy, 6-0, as Troy scored three goals in each half. Avalon Rew did everything she could in goal to keep Mansfield in the game with 17 saves.
Mariah Hallabuk recorded an impressive 21 saves, but it wasn’t enough as Sullivan County fell to Millville, 5-1. Quinn Pennella scored Sullivan’s lone goal off an assist by Kira Hottenstein.
• North Penn-Liberty’s girls volleyball team secured a 4-1 win over Athens (20-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-14). Haley Litzelman led Liberty recorded 14 kills and 18 digs. Kameron Lightner had 20 digs and 13 kills.
Madison Smith had an impressive 26 assists and Elaina Shaw posted 11 assists, seven digs and four kils. Maddie McNamara had 17 digs while Gabby Bubeck had 17 digs and six kills.
Lewisburg beat South Williamsport, 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 25-15). Claire Chandler led Lewisburg with 20 assists, five digs, three aces and three kills while Ellis Reed had six kills, three digs and three assists.
Virginia Morini had nine kills and four digs and Ella Vance posted six kills, two digs and two aces.
Lewisburg also saw Penelope Voneida and Addison Putman record four kills and four digs, respectively.
Statistics for South Williamsport were not made available.
• Junior Will Eberz led the Lycoming College golf team with a 24th-place finish with an 8-over-par 79 in a field of 69 golfers at the par-71, 6,261-yard Susquehanna Valley Country Club.
Eberz had 11 pars and a birdie on the par-5, 499-yard No. 10, as he finished a stroke ahead of teammates Tre Lesperance and Jersey Shore graduate Ryan Ault, who finished tied for 29th. Lesperance had nine pars and nine bogeys and Ault had eight pars and a birdie on the par-4, 380-yard No. 13.
Junior Connor Shanahan (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) rounded out the scoring four with a 12-over-par 83, as he notched birdies on the par-4, 355-yard No. 16 and par-5, 459-yard No. 17.
Lycoming’s score of 318 was good for ninth in a 14-team field. Susquehanna won the team title with a 293, three strokes ahead of Scranton.
