Local roundup: Loyalsock beats Hughesville in exciting girls tennis match
Loyalsock and Hughesville played an exciting tennis match with the Lancers winning a hard-fought, 3-2 decision and handing the Spartans their first loss. Gia Biacchi and Vivian Ream won at singles for Loyalsock as did the doubles team of Kinsley Hill and Annalise Berger. Hughesville’s Georgia Randall and Caroline Crawford played the match of the day with Randall winning a thriller, 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4. Hughesville’s Gracie Budman and Caroline Hicks also won in doubles.
Montoursville’s doubles team both fought back after dropping second sets to win their matches and highlight the Warriors’ 5-0 win against Bloomsburg. Mya Wilson and Ava Barto took the third set, 6-3 to clinch their match and Analiese Crossen and Charlotte Nau won 6-2 in the third set to seal their victory. Elsa Kehrer, Ali Ravert and Bella Aldinger won straight-set matches for the Warriors.
Montgomery and South Williamsport also played some riveting matches with all but one going to three sets as the Red Raiders prevailed, 4-1. Montgomery’s doubles teams of Arianna Snyder and Lanie Solano, as well as Avelyn Moore and Emily Miller each won in three sets. Snyder and Solano battled back from a set down, winning the final, 6-2, 6-1. Ava Hartman won a three-set match in singles as did South’s Mylee Morrison. Montgomery’s Cali Barnes won in straight sets.
Jersey Shore won two singles matches, but a sweep of the doubles competition allowed Central Columbia to pick up the 3-2 win against the Bulldogs.
Josie Gerst won at No. 1 singles against Cassandra Marte, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Julie Herman defeated Sydney Barry, 6-3, 6-3. Molly Dalton of Shore fell at No. 3 singles to Truc-Nhu Nguyen, 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Jersey Shore’s Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski nearly won a three-set thriller, but fell to Chloe Winters and Alexis Kulp, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.
Williamsport secured a 3-2 win against Shikellamy thanks sweeping the doubles action.
Peyton Kelley and Maddy Lundy won at No. 1 doubles over Makenna Hoffman and Mariela Lainez, 6-1, 7-5 and at No. 2 doubles, the Millionaires’ Gianna Vitko and Naomi Lee beat Izzy Krmer and Aiyanah Reid, 6-4, 6-6 (7-5).
In singles competition, the Millionaires’ lone victory was at No. 1 where Gabriella McQuillen beat Emmy Underkoffler, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, Kylie Bungo of Williamsport lost in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 to Emmy Erdley.
• Caradyn McGinley, Katelyn Temple and Jaysa Kiess both produced hat tricks and Hughesville scored 11 straight goals after falling behind early in an 11-2 win against Williamson. Elizabeth Wolfe and Kylie Temple also scored for Hughesville, while Wolfe had two assists.
Ava Eyer scored twice and assisted Kiki Woodward on another goal as Muncy defeated Troy, 3-1. Eyer and Woodward scored the first two goals and Eyer’s second goal made it, 3-0. Alexis McRoberts, an all-state football kicker at Canton, scored her 50th career goal for Troy which co-ops with Canton in soccer.
Scarlett Dunkleberger scored twice to lift Warrior Run to a 4-0 win over Loyalsock. Brooke Ryder scored off a corner kick and Maura Woland converted a penalty kick.
Loyalsock had several breakaways and pushed hard against the Defenders, but weren’t able to capitalize with a goal.
“The second half was back-and-forth with the Defenders shooting heavily and thwarting the pressing of the Loyalsock attack,” Warrior Run coach Rob Ryder noted.
Ava Deknecht played well in goal for the Lancers by recorded eight saves.
Lily McCarty scored four goals to propel Sullivan County to a 6-0 rout over CMVT in Mid-Penn action. Paighton Durland and Quinn Pennella both scored as well while McCarty and Sophia Livezey each added assists.
Williamsport and Midd-West played a tight contest and battled to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on the road at Midd-West.
Williamsport’s Deborah Shultz and Jaelynn Helmrich both scored goals while Loisa Hofstrom had an assist. McKylee Vollman had three saves for the Millionaires.
• Wellsboro took second in an NTL tri-meet with Wyalusing (173) and Sayre (248) by shooting a 176. The Green Hornets were led by Syler Pietrzyk’s 37 and Ben Jackson’s 44. Chase Schultz shot a 47, Mason Brill shot a 48, Keirnen Whitsell shot a 49 and Wellsboro’s Sam Jackson shot a 51.
