Local roundup: Loyalsock girls fall to Line Mountain as DeKnecht records 11 saves
Reece Temple assisted Mackenzie Miller’s goal to cut the deficit to one, but Line Mountain defeated Loyalsock, 3-1. Loyalsock’s Ava DeKnecht played well in goal, recording 11 saves to keep the Lancers in the game.
Midd-West earned a 3-0 win against Central Mountain. The Wildcats trailed 2-0 at the break. In the second half, Central Mountain matched the intensity from the first half and looked strong defensively. Central Mountain matched the physicality and attitude of the Mustangs. Goalie Alyssa Ford played solid in goal and turned away multiple dangerous opportunities.
• In boys soccer, Muncy blanked Sullivan County, 1-0, thanks to a goal just three minutes into the game. Austin Hartzel found the back of the net on an assist by Kryan Lisembee. The defense did the rest as Bodie Moyer recorded 14 saves and the back line didn’t allow Sullivan to break through.
Wellsboro’s Jonathan Carl scored a hat trick with his third and final goal giving Wellsboro an exciting 3-2 double overtime win over Troy in NTL action.
“We had 20 shots and 14 corner kicks, but struggled to get the ball across the goal line,” Wellsboro coach Todd Fitch said. “I’m proud of the grit and resilience the boys showed coming from behind twice and pressing to get the game winner in the final minutes of double overtime.”
Lewisburg defeated Jersey Shore, 5-0. The Bulldogs hung with the Green Dragons in the first half, trailing just 2-0, but three second-half goals put the game away. Viktor Permyashkin recorded two goals and an assist while Isaac Ayres had a goal and assist.
Jersey Shore was held without a single shot in the game.
• Hughesville moved to 8-1 thanks to a 4-1 victory against Milton in girls tennis. Georgia Randall earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Emily Waltman. At No. 2 singles, Rebecca Roberts beat Emma King, 7-6 (7-0), 6-0.
Milton’s win came at No. 3 singles where Carrie King beat Talia Saka, 6-2, 6-1.
Wellsboro defeated Muncy, 3-2. Evelyn Wetherbee of Wellsboro beat Mia Nicodemus 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Indians’ Zoe Dohl won at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-0. Muncy’s Elizabeth Howard earned a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Kyleigh Lynn.
Montoursville fell to Lewisburg, 5-0. Dayssi weis of Lewisburg defeated Elsa Kehrer, 6-2, 6-4 while Christina Zheng beat Ali Ravert at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles competition, Montoursville’s Mya Wilson and Kenna Vought beat Morgan Strieby and Ceci Cunado-James, 6-2, 6-2.
Montgomery earned a 3-2 win against Loyalsock thanks to winning two of three singles matches. Carli Barnes won at No. 1 singles for the Red Raiders over Caroline Crawford, 6-0, 6-4, and at No. 2 singles, it was Madisyn Miller posting a 6-4, 6-2 win against Gia Biacchi.
Loyalsock’s Vivian Reem won at No. 3 singles over Ava Hartman, 6-0, 6-1.
Central Mountain won an exciting 3-2 contest against Jersey Shore. Addison Lindsay won at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats, 6-0, 6-0 against Josie Gerst. The Bulldogs’ Julia Herman (No. 2) and Molly Dalton (No. 3) would pick up the other two singles’ victories.
Herman beat Lane Walker, 6-0, 6-2, while Dalton beat Kassie WIlliams, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles competition, Audra Eaton and Kylie Markle of Central Mountain beat Emily Shemory and Azlyn Guerrero, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in an exciting three-set contest. Leah Wian and Tess Akeley of Central Mountain won at No. 2 doubles, 6-3, 7-6, over Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski.
Williamsport lost to Central Columbia, 4-1. Williamsport’s Audrey Dincher played a great match at No. 1 singles in a losing effort, falling to Cassandra Marle 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Williamsport’s Gabriella McQuillen lost at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0, to Central’s Sydney Barry.
• Williamsport’s girls volleyball team played solid start to finish in a 3-0 win against Hughesville, 25-12, 25-14, 25-10. Peyton Dincher had a team-high 19 points while Belle Morrow added 17.
Morrow led Williamsport with 17 kills. Ava Fischer had four kills, Morrow had four digs with 12 assists, Mollie Roan and Libby Radspinner had three digs and Radspinner added 12 assists.
Morrow had three solo blocks and Pippy Kieser posted two assisted blocks.
Statistics for Hughesville were not made available.
Wellsboro beat Athens, 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17). Peyton Keane and Kendall Sweet both had eight kills while Ellie Largey had 12 assists. Taylor Main had a team-high 17 points and Blake Eckart had 12 digs. Maddy Cruttenden added 10 digs.
Central Mountain earned a 3-0 win against Lewisburg (26-11, 25-13, 25-9). Ella Vanve had five digs and two blocks for Lewisburg, Claire Chandler had five assists, Ellis Reed had five digs, Katie Houtz had two aces and two digs and Brooke Leauber had two kills.
Statistics for Central Mountain were not made available.
• Muncy defeated Warrior Run in girls field hockey in a close match, 2-0. Rosalie Zalonis scored both goals for the Indians. Selah Persing and Aliza Holmes both had assists for Muncy.
• In high school golf, Montoursville earned a 175-182 win against Loyalsock. The Warriors were led by Bryce Carey’s 39. Zack Neill shot a 43, Gabe Moser shot a 45 and Shea Ulmer shot a 48 on the nine-hole competition at Williamsport Country Club.
Loyalsock was led by Ronnie Emery’s 44, Drake Dupont’s 45, Garrett Rankinen’s 46 and Bryson Rankinen’s 47.
• Freshmen Kamryn Skeith and Emi Wenger combined for 17 kills to lead the Lycoming College volleyball team, which fell to Penn State-Harrisburg, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-16), in non-conference action.
Skeith posted a double-double with 14 assists and 11 digs, missing a triple-double by a kill, posting nine kills in 19 swings, hitting .421. Wenger notched eight kills and eight digs for the Warriors (3-5 overall). Freshman Charlene Petreshock added six kills and a block and senior Cameron Upcraft added four kills and two blocks.
Junior Ima Mercado added 10 digs and junior Haley Balgavy added seven assists and three digs. Sophomore Angela Farnham also added two blocks.
• The Bucknell women’s soccer team went toe-to-toe in a physical battle with No. 16 Georgetown on Thursday night at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium, but the Hoyas pulled out a 1-0 result on Shay Montgomery’s penalty kick with three minutes left in the match.
Coming off a 1-1 draw at Pittsburgh on Sunday, Bucknell had the more dangerous offensive chances in the first half, and then the Bison back line held strong against waves of pressure in the late stages of the contest, with some help from a couple of highlight-reel saves from Reese Dolan.
They couldn’t quite get a second straight result against a major conference team, however. Georgetown captain Natalie Means, who was a menace on the flanks throughout the second half, charged into the box and drew a penalty, and Montgomery converted from the spot.
Henna Andican, who attempted four of Bucknell’s nine shots, nearly tied it right back up only seconds after the restart, but her shot just missed the top right corner.
