Local roundup: Montoursville girls defeat Hughesville 1-0
Montoursville held off a talented Hughesville team and earned an exciting 1-0 win in girls soccer as Khaya Bennett scored the Warriors’ lone goal with 15 minutes to play in the game for the win.
The Spartans out-shot Montoursville, 12-7, but the Warriors’ back line and goalies didn’t allow Hughesville to put a goal in.
Warrior Run improved to 5-1-1 with a 2-0 win against Lewisburg. Scarlett Dunkleberger scored twice to help the Defenders earn the win as Nat Hall had two assists and Brooke Ryder assisted on a goal as well.
In goal, Chloe Burden posted 10 saves to preserve the shutout.
North Penn-Mansfield’s Brooke Wilcox scored five goals in a 5-1 win against Towanda in a Northern Tier League contest. Madison Baker, Adalyne Yungwirth and Abby Garverick all had assists.
“The communication and overall understanding of positioning on the field is starting to click with the team,” North Penn-Mansfield coach Maryann Wilcox said. “I am very pleased at how this team is taking what we have focused on at practice and putting it into action during our games. We really needed this win today, it was a big confidence booster for the team.”
Kat Bennage had four goals, Sammy Roarty had three assists and a goal and Maeve Ficks posted two goals and an assist as Milton cruised to a 10-0 rout over Mount Carmel. The Black Panthers limited the Red Tornadoes to just two shots on goal.
McKylee Vollman made five saves and Hannah Baird added three in Williamsport’s 5-0 loss against Central Columbia.
• Hughesville won all five matches in straight sets, defeating Montoursville, 5-0. Georgia Randall, Rebecca Roberts and Talia Saka all won in convincing fashion as did the doubles teams of Gracie Budman and Caroline Hicks and Carly Sones and Shelby Myers.
Danville stayed undefeated, blanking Jersey Shore, 5-0. Jersey Shore’s doubles team of Rylee Allison and Kamryn Kowalski extended their match to three sets.
Central Mountain swept all three singles matches, defeating Selinsgrove, 4-1. The doubles team of Tess Akeley and Leah Wian rallied from a set down and took their match in three sets.
Loyalsock won its second match in as many days, taking all three singles matches and defeating Lewisburg, 4-1. Caroline Crawford, Gia Biachhi and Vivian Reem all won in straight sets as did the Lancer doubles team of Kinsley Hill and Annalise Berger.
• The Jersey Shore boys cross country team earned four victories, defeating Montoursville, Mount Carmel, Montgomery and Mifflinburg. Sam Davis led the way for Jersey Shore, finishing in 17 minutes, 25 seconds. Lucy Engel had the best time for Jersey Shore in the girls race, finishing in 23:06.
• Penn College remained unbeaten following a 6-1 victory over Thiel College in a non-conference women’s soccer match.Megan Kurian gave Penn College an early 1-0 lead with an unassisted tally in the 17th minute.
Brooke Klinger made it 2-0 in the 28th minute before Olivia Casella found Kurian in the 30th minute to make it 3-0. Kurian later found Rylee Oliphant in the 35th minute to give PCT a 4-0 halftime lead.
Cadence Holmberg finished an Olivia Herman pass in the 55th minute to put the Wildcats ahead, 5-0, and Herman connected with Oliphant in the 63rd minute for Penn College’s final score.
The Lock Haven women’s soccer team drew even with East Stroudsburg on the road after the full 90 minutes to earn a 1-1 tie in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match.
With the tie, the Bald Eagles (1-1-1, 0-1-1 PSAC) and Warriors (0-0-2, 0-0-2 PSAC) both earn one point in the PSAC Eastern Division standings.
After a scoreless first half, Lily O’Brien put The Haven on the scoreboard with her first goal of the season off a helper from Makayla Grace Weber.
• With wins in singles and doubles in a tight match with Penn College, senior Luke Taylor, a Williamsport native, earned the Landmark Conference Athlete of the Week award, the conference office announced.
Taylor teamed with freshman-year Lucas Bower, a St. John Neumann graduate, to post a 6-0 win over Penn College’s No. 3 doubles team and Taylor beat Hawk, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Taylor is 8-5 in his singles career after going 7-5 as a junior in the No. 5 and 6 singles slots.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team fell to Alfred University, 7-0, in the team’s season-opening dual match.
Freshman Kyleigh Snyder, a Milton graduate, posted a 6-2 second set win over Alyssa Seegert at No. 3 singles, but fell 7-5 in the deciding set.
Alfred improved to 3-1 and Lycoming fell to 0-1.
