Local roundup: Williamsport boys win exciting game vs. Altoona 4-3

Williamsport secured an exciting 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon at Balls Mills against Altoona to improve to 3-5-1. With a tied game, it was Brayden Jarrett who scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Connor Hofstrom. Isaac Balza and Hofstrom each had a goal as did Spencer Kaar via penalty kick.

Hofstrom ended the game with two assists. George Delbaggio had two of Altoona’s three goals. Max Fink played solid in goal to keep Altoona from winning with five saves as the defense played well overall.

Loyalsock’s David Bjorkman had a solid performance, scoring twice with a goal per half as Loyalsock earned a 5-0 win against Troy and led 3-0 at the half. Dylan Eck added two goals as well and an assist while Wesley Johnson added a goal.

Aiden Wetzler and Connor Rodgers each had an assist as Loyalsock fired 19 shots on goal and Connor Lang recorded the shutout victory.

Sam Hadden and Carter Gormont both scored second-half goals to propel Hughesville to a 2-0 win against Wellsboro. The Green Hornets, which features a potent offense, was limited to just two shots on goal as Royce Gardner earned the shutout in goal for the Spartans.

Viktor Permyashkin scored the game’s lone goal in the 14th minute in the first half as Lewisburg secured a close 1-0 win against Abington Heights. The Green Dragons were out-shot by Abington Heights, 9-5, but Lewisburg’s defense played well and Gabe Pawling recorded six saves.

Benton defeated Milton, 4-1. The Black Panthers got on the board 28 seconds into the game when Tobin Strous scored, but Benton would score four unanswered goals to win, including two in a seven-minute span in the first half by Dalton Koch and Stover Lewis.

North Penn-Liberty’s Brady Grinnell scored a game-winning goal with 4:26 to play in the second overtime period to give the Mounties an exciting 2-1 win against Muncy. Kyran Lisembee scored Muncy’s goal and Liberty’s other goal in regulation came from the foot of Parker Jackson. Truman Loudenslager and David Graf had assists for Liberty.

Mifflinburg earned a tough 4-3 win against Jersey Shore thanks to Dylan Siegel’s two second-half goals.

Jersey Shore saw Dylan Hensler, Dekin McDermitt and Jayden Passettii both score. McDermitt added an assist as well.

On Friday, Jersey Shore and Shikellamy battled to a double overtime scoreless draw as neither defense allowed their opponent to fire many shots. Shikellamy out-shot the Bulldogs just 3-1 in a game with not much offense.

• Kiki Woodward and Ava Eyer each scored four goals, while Ella Nagel produced six assists as Muncy stayed undefeated and blanked CMVT, 15-0, in girls soccer. Nagel also scored a goal as did Hailey Ganoe, Anna Zalonis, Rachel Paulhamus, Amelia Beckman and Alexis Girven.

McKylee Vollman played an outstanding game in goal for Williamsport in a 1-0 double overtime loss against Altoona. Vollman made 13 saves.

South Williamsport searned a 3-0 win against Millville at home, scoring twice in the second half to pull away. Ayla Minier, Coco Kline and Kloey Persun all scored goals while Ana Oeler and Persun added assists.

Katie Zaktansky and Maura Woland bothr ecorded hat tricks while Scarlett Dunkleberger had two goals and Warrior Run cruised past Towanda, 11-1, scoring eight first-half goals.

Zaktansky added two assists as the Defenders out-shot Towanda, 28-3.

Milton blanked Shamokin, 6-0. Sammy Roarty had two goals and a team-high three assists while Olivia Heise and Maeve Ficks both scored twice. The Black Panthers also saw Kyleigh Ficks have two assists.

The Black Panthers fired 27 shots on goal in the win.

Wellsboro played Williamson tough and battled until the end, but a penalty kick with 7:44 allowed Williamson to defeat the Green Hornets in an NTL battle, 4-3.

Wellsboro’s goals came from Haylie Smith, Kate Bryant and Ella Boyce.

“Our girls showed incredible heart tonight. To battle back from a 3-1 deficit and push it to the wire shows the kind of team we are becoming,” Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said. “We may have lost on a PK, but the fight, belief and pressure we applied is something we can build on.”

• South Williamsport’s girls tennis team improved to 7-5 by defeating Cowanesque Valley, 5-0. Emma McLaughlin defeated Markenna BUrdick at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0 and at No. 2 singles, it was Mylee Morrison defeating Holly Peers, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles action, Peyton Coolidge and Ava Foote of South beat Madisyn Sawyer and Lexi Brown, 6-0, 6-0, while Carly Loudenslager and Caroline Mevlin. beat Caylin Potter and Ella Reed at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0.

Montgomery blanked Wellsboro, 5-0. Cali Barnes defeated Olivia Gage at No. 1 singles for Montgomery, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Montgomery’s Madisyn Miller beat Logan Root, 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles, Montgomery saw Ava Hartman post a close 6-4, 6-2 win against Serenity Mosher.

In doubles action, Arianna Snyder and Lainie Solano of Montgomery secured a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win against Evelyn Wetherbee and Kyleigh Lynn while Avelyn Moore and Emily Miller of Montgomery beat Wellsboro’s Piper Anderegg and Rowan Butters, 6-4, 6-1.

• Muncy’s field hockey team shutout Warrior Run, 6-0 as Selah Persing scored twice. Aliza Holmes, Avery Waldman, Juliea King and Abielle Niedermyer also scored with Rosie Zalonis having two assists. Maddy Price, Kylie Hartman and Lilly Wheeler combined for five saves in goal.

• After three scoreless periods, the Lycoming College field hockey team broke through in the fourth quarter to post a 2-0 victory over Cedar Crest College.

Lycoming (4-2) won their second in a row by posting their first shutout victory since a 1-0 win over Sept. 14, 2024 vs. Roberts Wesleyan.

Neither team scored for more than 50 minutes as the Warriors dominated the first three quarters with 20 shots and 15 penalty corners, but didn’t break through until junior Carmen Hannon found the back of the net after 51:16 of play on an assist by junior Loghan Shelley for her first goal of the season. It was Hannon’s fourth career goal and first since 2023.

• Sophomore Ella Magee scored a pair of second-half goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick with three minutes left to lead the Lycoming College women’s soccer team to a program-record eighth straight win, 2-1, over Alvernia.

Magee tied the game in the 63rd minute, as she scored off a corner kick that was deflected in before she notched the game-winner off a penalty kick with 3:02 left to play after freshman Gabriella Rabinowitz was tackled in the 18-yard box.

Magee already has 10 goals and eight assists for 28 points this season, sitting 13th in the program’s single-season history in goals, fifth in assists and 11th in points through just eight games.

Katie Connell scored from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, and Gaby Parker added a second 20 minutes later, and that’s all the Bucknell women’s soccer team needed in a 2-0 defeat of Lehigh in the Patriot League openers for both sides on Saturday.

Reese Dolan made six saves en route to her first career shutout, and the Bison improved to 3-5-2 on the season and 5-0-2 in their last seven games against the Mountain Hawks. Bucknell used a relentless press to generate a bevy of first-half chances, and then the Bison withstood a few Lehigh opportunities in the second half.

The Bison were on their heels in the opening four minutes, as Lehigh generated the first three shots of the game and nearly scored on a corner kick. Faith Dobosiewicz put her header into the crossbar, and then Connell blocked Abby-Lee Sanogo’s follow-up attempt off the goal line and into the hands of Reese Dolan.

• In a wild affair where John Carroll University fought back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game with 20 minutes left, freshman Leandro Cruz notched the game-winner in the 81st minute to give the Lycoming College men’s soccer team its third straight win, 3-2.

Cruz, with his back to the goal, secured a cross from freshman Alex Sincevich just outside the left side of the goalkeeper’s box, then turned and spun a hard-low shot past a diving keeper for the winner in the 81st minute. Sophomore Carter Block also assisted the play with a long lead pass to Sincevich, who took one touch before the cross, as Lycoming (3-2-2 overall) matriculated the ball 60 yards in 10 seconds for the goal.

Senior Christian Woobay helped Lycoming take a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute, scoring when he powered a misplayed touch by the goalkeeper behind the keeper and across the goalline for his 18th career goal and 49th career point.

Lock Haven fell to host Millersville University, 3-0, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East-West match.

With the loss, Lock Haven moves to 2-3-1 overall, while Millersville improves to 2-1-2. The host Marauders scored in the 15th minute and added two second-half goals. Roy Parkyn scored twice for Millersville.

Lock Haven goalkeeper Ethan Beck finished with five saves.

• The Lycoming College volleyball team moved back over .500 for the 2025 season by cruising to a sweep over Delaware Valley University (25-20, 25-20, 25-15), followed by a four-set victory over Albright College (25-17, 21-25, 25-12, 25-13).

Lycoming (7-6) has won three straight matches, defeating Delaware Valley (3-8) and shaking off a second-set stumble to knock off Albright (3-7).

In the Delaware Valley match, the Warriors used a 17-4 run to take control of the first set, then rallied from four points down in the second set, scoring seven of the last nine points. A seven-point run midway through the third set put the match away for Lycoming.

The Warriors were led by freshman Emi Wenger, who tallied nine kills and ten digs while hitting .368 in the match. Freshman Kamryn Skeith did a little bit of everything, with six kills, nine assists, nine digs, and three aces, while junior Ima Mercardo added 12 digs and junior Haley Balgavy chipped in 12 assists.

The Lock Haven volleyball team closed its weekend at the Bald Eagle Classic with an exciting five set thriller vs. Goldey-Beacom in front of the home crowd inside Thomas Fieldhouse. Goldey-Beacom took the clinching set to steal a 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 24-26, 25-17, 14-16).

The Bald Eagle Classic is a two-day event hosted by Lock Haven and features Glenville State, Goldey-Beacom, Edinboro and Bloomsburg.

Lock Haven opened strong, taking the first set 25-10 behind a dominant .325 hitting percentage and 19 team kills, but Goldey-Beacom (5-7) responded by claiming the next two frames, 25-11 and 25-14.

• The Lock Haven tennis team fell to visiting Kutztown, 6-1, at home on the Lock Haven Tennis Courts. Montoursville graduate Alaina Marchioni prevented the shutout thanks to a dominating victory at No. 3 singles. Marchioni won 6-1, 6-4.

Megan Ferris battled hard at No. 1 singles and the duo of Maci Rohrbach and Breanna Chicas was edged out in a hard-fought clash at No. 2 doubles.
