Montgomery boys soccer blanks Williams Valley 1-0

Montgomery’s boys soccer team earned a close 1-0 win over Williams Valley on Saturday evening to improve to 4-3.

Montgomery’s goal came early in the first half when Dylan Sherman was able to capitalize on a defensive lapse with a hustle play.  William Valley’s keeper, Xzavion Tennis, knocked down a hard shot not handling it cleanly allowing for a rebound opportunity.

As the keeper attempted to clear out the shot, Sherman lunged in front of the clearance deflecting the ball high into the Viking’s goal.

“Dylan had a heads up play and turned a half opportunity into the game winning goal,” said Montgomery coach Michael Sherman. “Little moments like that can make or break games when you struggle to get decent opportunities throughout the match.”

Up by a goal, it was time for Montgomery’s defense to go into lockdown mode. Red Raider keeper Conor Irwin continued his impressive steak of not conceding a goal in the last 160 minutes of soccer.

“I cannot say enough about this kid’s athletic ability. Conor made two unbelievable saves consecutively tonight that could have easily resulted in a win for Williams Valley,” said Sherman.

The Red Raiders picked up two new players this year that are making a big impact in the midfield. Senior Porter Hall and junior Cody Sechrist, both new to soccer, rely on their conditioning and general sports knowledge from participation in wrestling, basketball and baseball during the off-season to step in and make a difference.

“Porter hustles the full 80 and is a great motivational team player. Cody had his first assist at South earlier this week and gains confidence each time out,” Sherman said. “We are extremely great full for their willingness to give soccer a try this season.”
